Constructing History: John Everett Millais and The North-West Passage
This thesis explores the cultural context from which John Everett Millais’s painting, The North-West Passage, emerged, situating the painting in the larger visual culture of Arctic narratives. The painting is distinct due to Millais’s indirect approach to the Arctic subject matter and relies heavily upon the cultural literacy of the viewer. The North-West Passage is a continuation of Millais’s early predilection for constructed heroic narratives dependent upon interpersonal relationships. The painting indicates that Millais’s oeuvre is more united than scholars usually give it credit. Furthermore, The North-West Passage perpetuates normative Victorian attitudes towards gender, empire, and exploration. This study establishes the cultural and visual background of The North-West Passage, in order to reconstruct the knowledge that the Victorian viewer would have brought to the work
Hydrological controls of in situ preservation of waterlogged archaeological deposits
Environmental change caused by urban development, land drainage, agriculture or climate change may result in accelerated decay of
in situ archaeological remains. This paper reviews research into impacts of environmental change on hydrological processes of relevance
to preservation of archaeological remains in situ. It compares work at rural sites with more complex urban environments. The research
demonstrates that both the quantity and quality of data on preservation status, and hydrological and chemical parameters collected during
routine archaeological surveys need to be improved. The work also demonstrates the necessity for any archaeological site to be placed
within its topographic and geological context. In order to understand preservation potential fully, it is necessary to move away from
studying the archaeological site as an isolated unit, since factors some distance away from the site of interest can be important for
determining preservation. The paper reviews what is known about the hydrological factors of importance to archaeological preservation
and recommends research that needs to be conducted so that archaeological risk can be more adequately predicted and mitigated. Any
activity that changes either source pathways or the dominant water input may have an impact not just because of changes to the water
balance or the water table, but because of changes to water chemistry. Therefore, efforts to manage threatened waterlogged environments
must consider the chemical nature of the water input into the system. Clearer methods of assessing the degree to which buried
archaeological sites can withstand changing hydrological conditions are needed, in addition to research which helps us understand what
triggers decay and what controls thresholds of response for different sediments and types of artefact
Association between mode of delivery and body mass index at 4-5 years in White British and Pakistani children: the Born in Bradford birth cohort.
BACKGROUND: Globally, it is becoming more common for pregnant women to deliver by caesarean section (CS). In 2020, 31% of births in England were CS, surpassing the recommended prevalence of CS. Concerns have been raised regarding potential unknown consequences of this mode of delivery. Childhood adiposity is also an increasing concern. Previous research provides inconsistent conclusions on the association between CS and childhood adiposity. More studies are needed to investigate the consequences of CS in different populations and ethnicities. Therefore, this study investigates the association between mode of delivery and BMI, in children of 4-5 years and if this differs between White British (WB) and Pakistani ethnicities, in Bradford UK. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Born in Bradford (BiB) cohort, which recruited pregnant women at the Bradford Royal Infirmary, between 2007 and 2010. For these analyses, a sub-sample (n = 6410) of the BiB cohort (n = 13,858) was used. Linear regression models determined the association between mode of delivery (vaginal or CS) and BMI z-scores at 4-5 years. Children were categorised as underweight/healthy weight, overweight and obese, and logistic regression models determined the odds of adiposity. Effect modification by ethnicity was also explored. RESULTS: Multivariable analysis found no evidence for a difference in BMI z-score between children of CS and vaginal delivery (0.005 kg/m2, 95% CI = - 0.062-0.072, p = 0.88). Neither was there evidence of CS affecting the odds of being overweight (OR = 1.05, 95% CI = 0.86-1.28, p = 0.65), or obese (OR = 0.98, 95% CI = 0.74-1.29, p = 0.87). There was no evidence that ethnicity was an effect modifier of these associations (p = 0.97). CONCLUSION: Having CS, compared to a vaginal delivery, was not associated with greater adiposity in children of 4-5 years in this population. Concerns over CS increasing adiposity in children are not supported by the findings reported here using the BiB study population, of both WB and Pakistani families

The use of farmers' knowledge in coffee agroforestry management: implications for the conservation of tree biodiversity
In agroforestry systems, the survival of shade trees is often the result of farmers' deliberate selection. Therefore, how communities generate knowledge and apply it to resource management practices influence the potential for biodiversity conservation of agroforestry systems. In this study, we investigated the use of knowledge by farmers to manage coffee (Coffea arabica) agroforests and the consequences for the conservation of tree biodiversity and composition of surrounding forests. We interviewed 50 coffee farmers to investigate their shade tree preferences and sources of knowledge of the properties of shade trees and coffee management practices; we also conducted tree inventories in 31 coffee farms and 10 forest sites in La Sepultura Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas, Mexico. Our results showed that farmers are modifying agroforests according to their knowledge and tree preferences, and that the resulting agroforest is lower in tree diversity and dominated by pioneer and farmers' preferred tree species as compared to forests. The principal sources of knowledge of management practices are external sources, such as governmental and non‐governmental organizations, whereas the primary source of tree specific knowledge is empirical knowledge. We found that the higher proportion of pioneer trees relative to forest is mostly explained by farmers' tree selection decisions (63%) rather than as a byproduct of management practices (37%) that disturb the soil and open the canopy, altering light penetration and microclimate conditions. Based on interviews and tree inventories, we found that farmers gradually replace canopy trees of neutral and disliked species by preferred species, in particular Inga spp. We found that external sources continue to promote the idea that Inga spp. trees bring significant benefits to coffee production in spite of a lack of scientific evidence to support this claim. This indicates that farmers are receptive to incorporate outside knowledge into their knowledge systems and adapt their resource management practices accordingly. Our findings highlight the importance of disseminating sound and clear scientific information to practitioners who work directly with farming communities to ensure that accurate and up‐to‐date information is being contributed to local knowledge systems
Activating transcription factor 3 is a positive regulator of human IFNG gene expression
IL-12 and IL-18 are essential for Th1 differentiation, whereas the role of IFN-α in Th1 development is less understood. In this microarray-based study, we searched for genes that are regulated by IFN-α, IL-12, or the combination of IL-12 plus IL-18 during the early differentiation of human umbilical cord blood CD4+ Th cells. Twenty-six genes were similarly regulated in response to treatment with IL-12, IFN-α, or the combination of IL-12 plus IL-18. These genes could therefore play a role in Th1 lineage decision. Transcription factor activating transcription factor (ATF) 3 was upregulated by these cytokines and selected for further study. Ectopic expression of ATF3 in CD4+ T cells enhanced the production of IFN-α, the hallmark cytokine of Th1 cells, whereas small interfering RNA knockdown of ATF3 reduced IFN-γ production. Furthermore, ATF3 formed an endogenous complex with JUN in CD4+ T cells induced to Th1. Chromatin immunoprecipitation and luciferase reporter assays showed that both ATF3 and JUN are recruited to and transactivate the IFNG promoter during early Th1 differentiation. Collectively, these data indicate that ATF3 promotes human Th1 differentiation
High-resolution maps show that rubber causes substantial deforestation
Understanding the effects of cash crop expansion on natural forest is of fundamental importance. However, for most crops there are no remotely sensed global maps1, and global deforestation impacts are estimated using models and extrapolations. Natural rubber is an example of a principal commodity for which deforestation impacts have been highly uncertain, with estimates differing more than fivefold1,2,3,4. Here we harnessed Earth observation satellite data and cloud computing5 to produce high-resolution maps of rubber (10 m pixel size) and associated deforestation (30 m pixel size) for Southeast Asia. Our maps indicate that rubber-related forest loss has been substantially underestimated in policy, by the public and in recent reports6,7,8. Our direct remotely sensed observations show that deforestation for rubber is at least twofold to threefold higher than suggested by figures now widely used for setting policy4. With more than 4 million hectares of forest loss for rubber since 1993 (at least 2 million hectares since 2000) and more than 1 million hectares of rubber plantations established in Key Biodiversity Areas, the effects of rubber on biodiversity and ecosystem services in Southeast Asia could be extensive. Thus, rubber deserves more attention in domestic policy, within trade agreements and in incoming due-diligence legislation
