Alter und 'Demenz' im Diskurs der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts: Johann August Unzer und sein Umfeld

Johann August Unzer (1727-1799) gilt als einer der drei wichtigsten deutschsprachigen Mediziner der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Er kann zu den „Halleschen Psychomedizinern“ gerechnet werden, die damals an der Universität Halle das leibseelische Zusammenspiel erforschten. Als früher ‚Medizinjournalist‘ vermittelte er in seiner Wochenschrift „Der Arzt“ einer breiten Leserschaft neueste wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse. Die Dissertation untersucht die Publikationen Unzers und seines Gelehrtenkreises auf ihren Umgang mit Alter und der Erkrankung, die heute als Demenz konzeptualisiert ist. Die Forschung zu Alter und ‚Demenz‘ im 18. Jahrhundert, zu Unzers medizinischen Konzepten oder zu Alter und ‚Demenz‘ in Unzers Werk ist bisher dünn gesät oder fehlt ganz. Ziel der Arbeit war es, diese drei Aspekte ausführlich darzustellen und schließlich nach Parallelen zwischen dem Umgang des 18. und des 21. Jahrhunderts mit Alter und Demenz zu fragen. Auf eine statistische Auswertung der Texte wurde verzichtet. Textstellen, in denen Unzer das Alter, seine Krankheiten, seine Charakterzüge und seinen moralischen Status diskutiert, wurden in eine chronologische Abfolge gebracht und in thematisch getrennten Kapiteln vor die sozialen, gesellschaftlichen, wissenschaftlichen und politischen Hintergründe ihrer Entstehungszeit gestellt. Im Sinne der Historisch-kritischen Methode wurden sie möglichst ohne ethische Wertung aus ihrer historischen Perspektive diskutiert. Entsprechungen für das gegenwärtige Konzept der Demenz wurden anhand minimaler allgemein bekannter Rahmenbedingungen wie Gedächtnisstörungen oder deviantes Verhalten alter Menschen ermittelt. Bei der Gegenüberstellung des 18. Jahrhunderts und der Gegenwart ergab sich ein zwiespältiges Bild. Fortschritten in der Medizintechnik, gesellschaftlichen Umwälzungen und ethischen Umwertungen stehen Umgangsformen gegenüber, die sich – beispielsweise angesichts hohen Zeit- und Kostendrucks in Pflegekontexten – über die Jahrhunderte kaum verändert haben. Unzers Gedächtniskonzepte sind zwar aus heutiger Sicht realitätsfern, in sich jedoch schlüssig. Sein ganzheitlicher Ansatz kann für das 21. Jahrhundert schließlich als Vorbild dienen

As digital media provide new possibilities for teaching and outreach in Classics, the conference 'Teaching Classics in the Digital Age' aimed at presenting current approaches to digital teaching and sharing best practices by bringing together different projects and practitioners from all fields of Classics (including Classical Archaeology, Greek and Latin Studies and Ancient History). Shifting cancer care towards Multidisciplinarity: the cancer center certification program of the German cancer society

Background: Over the last decades numerous initiatives have been set up that aim at translating the best available medical knowledge and treatment into clinical practice. The inherent complexity of the programs and discrepancies in the terminology used make it difficult to appreciate each of them distinctly and compare their specific strengths and weaknesses. To allow comparison and stimulate dialogue between different programs, we in this paper provide an overview of the German Cancer Society certification program for multidisciplinary cancer centers that was established in 2003. Main body: In the early 2000s the German Cancer Society assessed the available information on quality of cancer care in Germany and concluded that there was a definite need for a comprehensive, transparent and evidence-based system of quality assessment and control. This prompted the development and implementation of a voluntary cancer center certification program that was promoted by scientific societies, health-care providers, and patient advocacy groups and based on guidelines of the highest quality level (S3). The certification system structures the entire process of care from prevention to screening and multidisciplinary treatment of cancer and places multidisciplinary teams at the heart of this program. Within each network of providers, the quality of care is documented using tumor-specific quality indicators. The system started with breast cancer centers in 2003 and colorectal cancer centers in 2006. In 2017, certification systems are established for the majority of cancers. Here we describe the rationale behind the certification program, its history, the development of the certification requirements, the process of data collection, and the certification process as an example for the successful implementation of a voluntary but powerful system to ensure and improve quality of cancer care. Conclusion: Since 2003, over 1 million patients had their primary tumors treated in a certified center. There are now over 1200 sites for different tumor entities in four countries that have been certified in accordance with the program and transparently report their results from multidisciplinary treatment for a substantial proportion of cancers. This led to a fundamental change in the structure of cancer care in Germany and neighboring countries within one decade

Abundance and scarcity: classical theories of money, bank balance sheets and business models, and the British restriction of 1797‐1818.

The thesis looks through the lens of bank balance sheet accounting to investigate the structural change in the British banking system between 1780 and 1832, and how classical quantity theorists of money attempted to respond to the ensuing financialisation of the wartime economy with its growing reliance on credit funded with paper-based instruments (the ‘Vansittart system’ of war finance). The thesis combines contributions to three separate fields to construct a holistic historical example of the challenges faced by monetary economists when ‘modelling’ financial innovation, credit growth, ‘fringe’ banking, and agent incentives – at a time of radical experimentation: the suspension of the 80-year-old gold standard (“the Restriction”). First, critical text analysis of the history of economics argues that the 1809-10 debate between Ricardo and Bosanquet at the peak of the credit boom, bifurcated classical theory into two timeless competing policy paradigms advocating the ‘Scarcity’ or ‘Abundance’ of money relative to exchange transactions. The competing hypotheses regarding the role of money and credit are identified and the rest of the thesis examines the archival evidence for each. Second, the core of the thesis contributes to the historical literature on banking in relation to money by reconstructing a taxonomy of bank business models, their relationships with the London inter-bank settlement system, and their responses to the Restriction - drawing on some 17,000 mostly new data points collected from the financial records of London and Country banks. The final section contributes to the economic history of money by constructing aggregated views of total bank liabilities from the firm-level data, scaled to recently available British GDP estimates. These are examined to establish (with hindsight) the relative merits and lacuna of the competing theoretical hypotheses postulated by political economists. It was the period of deleveraging after 1810 that revealed the lacuna of both paradigms
