CITAR LOS RENGLONES CINEMATOGRĂFICOS EN LA CONVERSACIĂN: ÂżQUĂ, POR QUĂ, Y CĂMO?
Although media are known to impact affect, attitudes, behavior, and physiological indicators, no research has examined the very common but long-ignored behavior of quoting lines from movies in conversation. The primary goal of the present exploratory studies was to observe the emotions, reasons, and behaviors associated with movie quoting, and compare predicted accuracy with actual accuracy. Questionnaires were administered to two samples of 478 young adult university students. Results showed that 100% quoted movies, primarily comedies (about 70%), in conversation. They did so primarily in order to amuse themselves and others and reported little to no effort necessary to remember the lines. Lines were quoted completely or almost completely accurately around 90% of the time, and the intended hearers were usually others who had seen the film, with quoters seldom surprised at othersâ reactions. Results were interpreted in light of Banduraâs (2002) theory of observational learning and its four components.
Antibacterial properties and abrasion-stability: Development of a novel silver-compound material for orthodontic bracket application
Purpose: Bacteria-induced white spot lesions are a common side effect of modern orthodontic treatment. Therefore, there is a need for novel orthodontic bracket materials with antibacterial properties that also resist long-term abrasion. The aim of this study was to investigate the abrasion-stable antibacterial properties of a newly developed, thoroughly silver-infiltrated material for orthodontic bracket application in an in situ experiment. Methods: To generate the novel material, silver was vacuum-infiltrated into a sintered porous tungsten matrix. A tooth brushing simulation machine was used to perform abrasion equal to 2 years of tooth brushing. The material was characterized by energy dispersive Xâray (EDX) analysis and roughness measurement. To test for antibacterial properties in situ, individual occlusal splints equipped with specimens were worn intraorally by 12 periodontal healthy patients for 48âŻh. After fluorescence staining, the quantitative biofilm volume and live/dead distribution of the initial biofilm formation were analyzed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Results: Silver was infiltrated homogeneously throughout the tungsten matrix. Toothbrush abrasion only slightly reduced the materialâs thickness similar to conventional stainless steel bracket material and did not alter surface roughness. The new silver-modified material showed significantly reduced biofilm accumulation in situ. The effect was maintained even after abrasion. Conclusion: A promising, novel silver-infiltrated abrasion-stable material for use as orthodontic brackets, which also exhibit strong antibacterial properties on in situ grown oral biofilms, was developed. The strong antibacterial properties were maintained even after surface abrasion simulated with long-term toothbrushing

Effect of fertilizers on yield and quality of potatoes in the Willamette Valley
Data from fertilizer experiments with potatoes in the Willamette Valley from 1961 through 1971 show that responses have been measured from nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and lime. Responses from these nutrients have been related to soil and/or plant analysis values. In recent years most of the potato production has moved from hill soil areas to valley floor soils with much of the production following cereal crops with the straw disced or plowed into the soil before planting potatoes. These experiments show that 150 to 200 pounds of nitrogen per acre should be applied for April-planted potatoes following a cereal crop, and this rate should be reduced to 50 to 100 pounds of nitrogen per acre for late May plantings or where potatoes follow a heavily fertilized row crop. There was a response from band application of phosphorus on all locations. Rates of phosphorus application should be increased from about 80 to about 160 pounds of phosphorus (P2O,) per acre when phosphorus soil test values drop below 40 parts per million. One hundred pounds of potassium (K2O) per acre should be applied when soil analyses range from 300 to 400 ppm potassium (K). Magnesium fertilizer should be added when soil test values are below 0.8 milliequivalents magnesium per 100 grams of soil. Application of lime the fall before planting should be considered when the soil pH is below 5.5 and soil analysis shows 5 milliequivalents of calcium per 100 grams of soil or less.Published October 1967. Agronomic and Kernel Compositional Traits of Blue Maize Landraces from the Southwestern United States
Diverse landraces of maize have been cultivated for centuries in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico primarily for human food consumption. A striking feature of these landraces is the wide array of kernel colors displayed. Traditional cultivation is declining, but blue maize has received increasing commercial interest due to rising consumer demand for unique food products with health benefits and special culinary uses. We evaluated grain yield, agronomic and morphological traits, and analyzed the kernel biochemical composition of five blue and one purple landraces representative of diversity in the Southwest. These were compared with selected open-pollinated populations derived from Southwest and Corn Belt blue maize at several New Mexico locations in 2012 and 2013. Kernel amino acids, oil, protein, starch, fatty acids, crude fiber, ash and anthocyanin pigment contents were determined. Grain yield across all locations, years, and accessions averaged 2.11 Mg haâ1. Navajo Blue and Hopi Blue were the highest and lowest yielding accessions, respectively. The majority of southwestern landraces displayed higher oil content, and two displayed higher protein content, than the Corn Belt Dent variety. Little variation in total amino acid content was observed. Several southwestern floury accessions displayed âŒ10% greater lysine and methionine than did dent or flint genotypes. Considerable variation for plant, ear, and kernel compositional traits within and across southwestern landraces was consistent with the presence of racial admixtures. The health-promoting properties of anthocyanin-rich landraces contribute to sound dietary nutrition and human health. This study further illustrates the diversity of southwestern maize and supports the rationale for their continued conservation through sustained cultivation and utilization. Directed selection to improve grain yield and uniformity will be necessary to enhance their potential for commercial production
The climatic impacts of land surface change and carbon management, and the implications for climate-change mitigation policy
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/14693062Strategies to mitigate anthropogenic climate change recognize that carbon sequestration in the terrestrial biosphere
can reduce the build-up of carbon dioxide in the Earthâs atmosphere. However, climate mitigation policies do not
generally incorporate the effects of these changes in the land surface on the surface albedo, the fluxes of sensible and
latent heat to the atmosphere, and the distribution of energy within the climate system. Changes in these components
of the surface energy budget can affect the local, regional, and global climate. Given the goal of mitigating climate
change, it is important to consider all of the effects of changes in terrestrial vegetation and to work toward a better
understanding of the full climate system. Acknowledging the importance of land surface change as a component of
climate change makes it more challenging to create a system of credits and debits wherein emission or sequestration
of carbon in the biosphere is equated with emission of carbon from fossil fuels. Recognition of the complexity of
human-caused changes in climate does not, however, weaken the importance of actions that would seek to minimize
our disturbance of the Earthâs environmental system and that would reduce societal and ecological vulnerability to
environmental change and variability
Genetic Drivers of Kidney Defects in the DiGeorge Syndrome
Background The DiGeorge syndrome, the most common of the microdeletion syndromes, affects multiple organs, including the heart, the nervous system, and the kidney. It is caused by deletions on chromosome 22q11.2; the genetic driver of the kidney defects is unknown. Methods We conducted a genomewide search for structural variants in two cohorts: 2080 patients with congenital kidney and urinary tract anomalies and 22,094 controls. We performed exome and targeted resequencing in samples obtained from 586 additional patients with congenital kidney anomalies. We also carried out functional studies using zebrafish and mice. Results We identified heterozygous deletions of 22q11.2 in 1.1% of the patients with congenital kidney anomalies and in 0.01% of population controls (odds ratio, 81.5; P=4.5Ă10(-14)). We localized the main drivers of renal disease in the DiGeorge syndrome to a 370-kb region containing nine genes. In zebrafish embryos, an induced loss of function in snap29, aifm3, and crkl resulted in renal defects; the loss of crkl alone was sufficient to induce defects. Five of 586 patients with congenital urinary anomalies had newly identified, heterozygous protein-altering variants, including a premature termination codon, in CRKL. The inactivation of Crkl in the mouse model induced developmental defects similar to those observed in patients with congenital urinary anomalies. Conclusions We identified a recurrent 370-kb deletion at the 22q11.2 locus as a driver of kidney defects in the DiGeorge syndrome and in sporadic congenital kidney and urinary tract anomalies. Of the nine genes at this locus, SNAP29, AIFM3, and CRKL appear to be critical to the phenotype, with haploinsufficiency of CRKL emerging as the main genetic driver.
