    Investigating German Higher Education Institutions\u27 Transfer Activities: New Measurements Based on Web Mining

    In recent years, higher education institutions (HEI) have expanded their involvement in diverse transfer activities (TA), extending beyond traditional teaching and research roles. These TA are often heterogeneous and informal, which makes measuring their full scope and effects challenging. In this article, we propose a new and straightforward to implement approach for mastering this task. In a first step, we theoretically derive three different dimensions of transfer, namely the transfer of knowledge, technology and personnel. For each of these categories, we develop an artificial intelligence (AI) optimized keyword list. Finally, we use these lists and apply web mining techniques and natural language processing (NLP) to measure TA from German HEI. To this end, we analyze a total of 299,229 texts from 376 German HEI websites. Our study shows that our proposed approach represents an effective and valuable tool for measuring TA from HEI and provides a foundation for further research

    Guessing probability distributions from small samples

    We propose a new method for the calculation of the statistical properties, as e.g. the entropy, of unknown generators of symbolic sequences. The probability distribution p(k)p(k) of the elements kk of a population can be approximated by the frequencies f(k)f(k) of a sample provided the sample is long enough so that each element kk occurs many times. Our method yields an approximation if this precondition does not hold. For a given f(k)f(k) we recalculate the Zipf--ordered probability distribution by optimization of the parameters of a guessed distribution.     Homo- and Heterotypic Cell Contacts in Malignant Melanoma Cells and Desmoglein 2 as a Novel Solitary Surface Glycoprotein

    During progression of melanomas, a crucial role has been attributed to alterations of cell–cell adhesions, specifically, to a “cadherin switch” from E- to N-cadherin (cad). We have examined the adhesion of melanoma cells to each other and to keratinocytes. When different human melanoma cell lines were studied by protein analysis and immunofluorescence microscopy, six of eight lines contained N-cad, three E-cad, and five P-cad, and some lines had more than one cad. Surprisingly, two N-cad-positive lines, MeWo and C32, also contained desmoglein 2 (Dsg2), a desmosomal cad previously not reported for melanomas, whereas other desmosome-specific proteins were absent. This finding was confirmed by reverse transcriptase–PCR, immunoprecipitation, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time of flight analyses. Double-label confocal and immunoelectron microscopy showed N-cad, α- and β-catenin in plaque-bearing puncta adhaerentia, whereas Dsg2 was distributed rather diffusely over the cell surface. In cocultures with HaCaT keratinocytes Dsg2 was found in heterotypic cell contact regions. Correspondingly, immunohistochemistry revealed Dsg2 in five of 10 melanoma metastases. Together, we show that melanoma cell adhesions are more heterogeneous than expected and that certain cells devoid of desmosomes contain Dsg2 in a non-junction-restricted form. Future studies will have to clarify the diagnostic and prognostic significance of these different adhesion protein subtypes

    Cumulant expansion for studying damped quantum solitons

    The quantum statistics of damped optical solitons is studied using cumulant-expansion techniques. The effect of absorption is described in terms of ordinary Markovian relaxation theory, by coupling the optical field to a continuum of reservoir modes. After introduction of local bosonic field operators and spatial discretization pseudo-Fokker-Planck equations for multidimensional s-parameterized phase-space functions are derived. These partial differential equations are equivalent to an infinite set of ordinary differential equations for the cumulants of the phase-space functions. Introducing an appropriate truncation condition, the resulting finite set of cumulant evolution equations can be solved numerically. Solutions are presented in Gaussian approximation and the quantum noise is calculated, with special emphasis on squeezing and the recently measured spectral photon-number correlations [Spaelter et al., Phys.     Hopf algebras and Markov chains: Two examples and a theory

    The operation of squaring (coproduct followed by product) in a combinatorial Hopf algebra is shown to induce a Markov chain in natural bases. Chains constructed in this way include widely studied methods of card shuffling, a natural "rock-breaking" process, and Markov chains on simplicial complexes. Many of these chains can be explictly diagonalized using the primitive elements of the algebra and the combinatorics of the free Lie algebra. For card shuffling, this gives an explicit description of the eigenvectors. For rock-breaking, an explicit description of the quasi-stationary distribution and sharp rates to absorption follow.Comment: 51 pages, 17 figures. (Typographical errors corrected.     Searches at HERA for Squarks in R-Parity Violating Supersymmetry

    A search for squarks in R-parity violating supersymmetry is performed in e^+p collisions at HERA at a centre of mass energy of 300 GeV, using H1 data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb^(-1). The direct production of single squarks of any generation in positron-quark fusion via a Yukawa coupling lambda' is considered, taking into account R-parity violating and conserving decays of the squarks. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is found. The results are interpreted in terms of constraints within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), the constrained MSSM and the minimal Supergravity model, and their sensitivity to the model parameters is studied in detail. For a Yukawa coupling of electromagnetic strength, squark masses below 260 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level in a large part of the parameter space. For a 100 times smaller coupling strength masses up to 182 GeV are excluded.Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures, 3 table

    Forward pi^0 Production and Associated Transverse Energy Flow in Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    Deep-inelastic positron-proton interactions at low values of Bjorken-x down to x \approx 4.10^-5 which give rise to high transverse momentum pi^0 mesons are studied with the H1 experiment at HERA. The inclusive cross section for pi^0 mesons produced at small angles with respect to the proton remnant (the forward region) is presented as a function of the transverse momentum and energy of the pi^0 and of the four-momentum transfer Q^2 and Bjorken-x. Measurements are also presented of the transverse energy flow in events containing a forward pi^0 meson. Hadronic final state calculations based on QCD models implementing different parton evolution schemes are confronted with the data.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures and 3 table
