Redshift and velocity dispersion of the cluster of galaxies around NGC 326
Redshifts of several galaxies thought to be associated with NGC 326 are
determined. The results confirm the presence of a cluster and find a mean
redshift of z = 0.0477 +/- 0.0007 and a line-of-sight velocity dispersion
sigma_{z} = 599 (+230, -110) km/s. The velocity dispersion and previously
measured X-ray gas temperature of kT ~ 1.9 keV are consistent with the cluster
sigma_{z}/kT relation, and NGC 326 is seen to be a slowly-moving member of the

Requirement of endogenous tumor necrosis factor/cachectin for recovery from experimental peritonitis
By intrasplenic immunization we raised a rat mAb (mAb V1q; IgG2a, kappa) with a potent neutralizing activity against natural mouse TNF (1 microgram/ml mAb V1q/100 U/ml TNF). mAb V1q was used to study the role of endogenous TNF in experimental peritonitis induced by sublethal cecal ligation and puncture. mAb V1q persisted for over 5 days in the serum of mice injected with 100 micrograms of the antibody and, therefore, proved useful for in vivo experiments. As little as 20 micrograms mAb V1q/mouse prevented lethal shock of the animals by 400 micrograms LPS/mouse. In sublethal cecal ligation and puncture i.p. injection of mAb V1q directly and up to 8 h after induction of experimental peritonitis lead to death of the animals within 1 to 3 days. The lethal effect of mAb V1q was compensated by injection of recombinant mouse TNF. Similar mAb V1q effects as in immunocompetent mice were shown in severe combined immune deficiency mice deficient of mature functional B and T cells. Taken together, these data suggest that during the early phase of peritonitis endogenous TNF may stimulate nonlymphoid cells such as granulocytes, macrophages, platelets, and fibroblasts to ingest bacteria and to localize inflammation, respectively. These beneficial effects of TNF may determine survival. Thus, our data may have implications for the therapeutic management of a beginning peritonitis

Palaeolimnology of Lake Sapanca and identification of historic earthquake signals, Northern Anatolian Fault Zone (Turkey)
Lake Sapanca is located on a strand of the Northern Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ, Turkey), where a series of strong earthquakes (Ms >6.0) have occurred over the past hundred years. Identifying prehistoric
earthquakes in and around Lake Sapanca is key to a better understanding of plate movements along the
NAFZ. This study contributes to the development of palaeolimnological tools to identify past earthquakes
in Lake Sapanca. To this end several promising proxies were investigated, specifically lithology, magnetic
susceptibility, grain size (thin-section and laser analysis), geochemistry, pollen concentration, diatom
assemblages, 137Cs and 210Pb. Sedimentological indicators provided evidence for reworked, turbidite-like
or homogeneous facies (event layers) in several short cores (<45 cm). Other indicators of sediment input
and the historical chronicles available for the area suggest that three of these event layers likely originated
from the AD 1957, 1967 and 1999 earthquakes. Recent changes in sediment deposition and nutrient
levels have also been identified, but are probably not related to earthquakes. This study demonstrates
that a combination of indicators can be used to recognize earthquake-related event layers in cores that encompass a longer period of time
Analysis of cool DO-type white dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 10
We report on the identification of 22 new cool DO-type white dwarfs (WD)
detected in Data Release 10 (DR10) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS).
Among them, we found one more member of the so-called hot-wind DO WDs, which
show ultrahigh excitation absorption lines. Our non-LTE model atmosphere
analyses of these objects and two not previously analyzed hot-wind DO WDs,
revealed effective temperatures and gravities in the ranges Teff=45-80kK and
log g= 7.50-8.75. In eight of the spectra we found traces of C (0.001-0.01, by
mass). Two of these are the coolest DO WDs ever discovered that still show a
considerable amount of C in their atmospheres. This is in strong contradiction
with diffusion calculations, and probably, similar to what is proposed for DB
WDs, a weak mass-loss is present in DO WDs. One object is the most massive DO
WD discovered so far with a mass of 1.07 M_sun if it is an ONe-WD or 1.09 M_sun
if it is a CO-WD. We furthermore present the mass distribution of all known hot
non-DA (pre-) WDs and derive the hot DA to non-DA ratio for the SDSS DR7
spectroscopic sample. The mass distribution of DO WDs beyond the wind limit
strongly deviates from the mass distribution of the objects before the wind
limit. We address this phenomenon by applying different evolutionary input
channels. We argue that the DO WD channel may be fed by about 13% by
post-extreme-horizontal branch stars and that PG1159 stars and O(He) stars may
contribute in a similar extent to the non-DA WD channel.Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in A&
Enhancement of experimental metastasis by tumor necrosis factor
The influence of endogenous and exogenous tumor necrosis factor (TNF) on metastasis was investigated in an experimental fibrosarcoma metastasis model. A single intraperitoneal injection of recombinant human (rh) TNF or recombinant mouse (rm) TNF into mice 5 h before intravenous inoculation of methylcholanthrene-induced fibrosarcoma cells (CFS1) induced a significant enhancement of the number of metastases in the lung. Dose responses of rmTNF and rhTNF demonstrated a stronger metastasis-augmenting effect by rmTNF compared with rhTNF. This effect was time dependent, as administration of rmTNF 5 h before or 1 h but not 24 h after tumor cell inoculation caused an increase of tumor cell colony formation on the lung surface, suggesting an influence of TNF on the vascular adhesion and diapedesis of tumor cells. Since tumor-bearing mice showed an enhanced ability to produce TNF after endotoxin injection compared to control mice, tumor-bearing mice were treated with anti-mTNF antibodies. Neutralization of endogenous tumor-induced TNF led to a significant decrease of the number of pulmonary metastases. Histological analysis of micrometastases in the lung on day 5 by silver staining of proteins associated with nucleolar organizer regions revealed more metastatic foci and augmented proliferative activity of the tumor cells after rmTNF pretreatment of mice. However, no direct effect of rmTNF on the proliferation rate of tumor cells was seen in vitro. These findings suggest that low doses of endogenous TNF or administered TNF during cytokine therapy might enhance the metastatic potential of circulating tumor cells
Magnetoresistance oscillations in GaAs/AlGaAs superlattices subject to in-plane magnetic fields
The MBE-grown GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice with Si-doped barriers has been used
to study a 3D-2D transition under the influence of the in-plane component of
applied magnetic field. The longitudinal magnetoresistance data measured in
tilted magnetic fields have been interpreted in terms of a simple tight-binding
model. The data provide values of basic parameters of the model and make it
possible to reconstruct the superlattice Fermi surface and to calculate the
density of states for the lowest Landau subbands. Positions of van Hove
singularities in the DOS agree excellently with magnetoresistance oscillations,
confirming that the model describes adequately the magnetoresistance of

Triaxiality and the determination of the cubic shape parameter K3 from five observables
The absolute and the relative quadrupole shape invariants q3 and K3 provide a
model independent measure of triaxiality for beta-rigid nuclei. We will show
that one can obtain q3 and K3 from a small number of observables. The
approximations which are made will be shown to hold within a few percent both
in the rigid triaxial rotor model and the interacting boson model. The shape
parameter K3 is given for an exemplary set of nuclei and is translated into
effective values of the geometrical deformation parameters beta and gamma.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure
The optimal cloning of quantum coherent states is non-Gaussian
We consider the optimal cloning of quantum coherent states with single-clone
and joint fidelity as figures of merit. Both optimal fidelities are attained
for phase space translation covariant cloners. Remarkably, the joint fidelity
is maximized by a Gaussian cloner, whereas the single-clone fidelity can be
enhanced by non-Gaussian operations: a symmetric non-Gaussian 1-to-2 cloner can
achieve a single-clone fidelity of approximately 0.6826, perceivably higher
than the optimal fidelity of 2/3 in a Gaussian setting. This optimal cloner can
be realized by means of an optical parametric amplifier supplemented with a
particular source of non-Gaussian bimodal states. Finally, we show that the
single-clone fidelity of the optimal 1-to-infinity cloner, corresponding to a
measure-and-prepare scheme, cannot exceed 1/2. This value is achieved by a
Gaussian scheme and cannot be surpassed even with supplemental bound entangled
