    Exploring the curriculum development in content and language integrated learning: A systematic review

    Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) is a booming innovation pervading many educational settings. The global spread of CLIL is being practiced in classrooms the world over. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of systematic curricula for CLIL, despite its widespread adoption. Furthermore, the majority of teachers are implementing CLIL without the support of suitable published materials or resource banks. To explore and explain the curriculum development in CLIL, 281 studies from 2009 to 2019 were reviewed systematically, focusing on peer-reviewed English-language journals. We identified studies through using 'Content and Language Integrated Learning' and CLIL as the search terms in the ProQuest Research Library and EBSCOhost databases. Selected articles were organized into five inquiry areas and analyzed thematically, inspired by the curriculum development model proposed by Pawlas and Oliva: 1) CLIL philosophy; 2) CLIL goals; 3) CLIL plan; 4) CLIL implementation; and 5) CLIL evaluation. Based on these themes, Boyer's scholarship of integration was introduced to propose a holistic model for CLIL curriculum development

    Study on empirical model and CFD about pressure rising in Cab during door closure

    Aiming at the problem that there is a strong eardrum pressure in the passenger car during the closing process, two analysis and prediction methods, fast formula prediction and CFD simulation based on accurate models, are proposed. The regression model of ear pressure comfort was established by DOE method and multiple linear regression; The simulation software star-CCM+ is applied to simulate and analyze the dynamic characteristics of the flow field in the cockpit during the closing process by using the overlapping grid technology, and the pressure change curve near the ear is obtained. Finally, the CFD numerical simulation model is established by comparing and analyzing the regression prediction analysis results and the real vehicle test data. The results show that the effects of closing speed, effective opening area of pressure relief valve and air tightness of the whole vehicle on the pressure of passengers’ eardrums decrease in turn, and the prediction error of multiple linear regression equation is 17 %; The analysis error of the internal flow field dynamic characteristic model based on refined modeling is 8 %. This study provides a theoretical basis for solving the problem of rapid prediction of eardrum pressure and optimization of engineering structure

    Modulation of Gut Microbiota by Low Methoxyl Pectin Attenuates Type 1 Diabetes in Non-obese Diabetic Mice

    Intestinal homeostasis underpins the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D), and dietary manipulations to enhance intestinal homeostasis have been proposed to prevent T1D. The current study aimed to investigate the efficacy of supplementing a novel specific low-methoxyl pectin (LMP) dietary fiber in preventing T1D development. Female NOD mice were weaned onto control or 5% (wt/wt) LMP supplemented diets for up to 40 weeks of age, overt diabetes incidence and blood glucose were monitored. Then broad-spectrum antibiotics (ABX) treatment per os for 7 days followed by gut microbiota transfer was performed to demonstrate gut microbiota-dependent effects. Next-generation sequencing was used for analyzing the composition of microbiota in caecum. Concentration of short chain fatty acids were determined by GC-MS. The barrier reinforcing tight junction proteins zonula occludens-2 (ZO-2), claudin-1 and NOD like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation were determined by Western blot. The proportion of CD25(+)Foxp3(+)CD4(+) regulatory T cell (Foxp3(+) Treg) in the pancreas, pancreatic and mesenteric lymph nodes was analyzed by flow cytometry. We found that LMP supplementation ameliorated T1D development in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice, as evidenced by decreasing diabetes incidence and fasting glucose levels in LMP fed NOD mice. Further microbiota analysis revealed that LMP supplementation prevented T1D-associated caecal dysbiosis and selectively enriched caecal bacterial species to produce more SCFAs. The LMP-mediated microbial balance further enhanced caecal barrier function and shaped gut-pancreatic immune environment, as characterized by higher expression of tight junction proteins claudin-1, ZO-2 in caecum, increased Foxp3(+) Treg population and decreased NLRP3 inflammasome activation in both caecum and pancreas. The microbiota-dependent beneficial effect of LMP on T1D was further proven by the fact that aberration of caecal microbiota by ABX treatment worsened T1D autoimmunity and could be restored with transfer of feces of LMP-fed NOD mice. These data demonstrate that this novel LMP limits T1D development by inducing caecal homeostasis to shape pancreatic immune environment. This finding opens a realistic option for gut microbiota manipulation and prevention of T1D in humans

    An improved positioning algorithm in a long-range asymmetric perimeter security system

    In this paper, an improved positioning algorithm is proposed for a long-range asymmetric perimeter security system. This algorithm employs zero-crossing rate to detect the disturbance starting point, and then utilizes an improved empirical mode decomposition to obtain the effective time-frequency distribution of the extracted signal. In the end, a cross-correlation is used to estimate the time delay of the effective extracted signal. The scheme is also verified and analyzed experimentally. The field test results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve a detection of 96.60% of positioning errors distributed within the range of 0-±20 m at the sensing length of 75 km, which significantly improves the positioning accuracy for the long-range asymmetric fence perimeter application

    Experience in the treatment of long-gap esophageal atresia by intraluminal esophageal stretching elongation

    ObjectiveTo summarize the experience with intraluminal esophageal stretching elongation (ILESE) in the successful treatment of long-gap esophageal atresia (LGEA) at a single center.MethodsClinical data of 68 neonates who underwent LGEA between February 2015 and January 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Four patients died of multiple associated severe malformations and did not undergo ILESE. Esophageal anastomosis was successfully performed in 60 cases (93.75%) and failed in 4 cases (6.25%) treated with ILESE. The ILESE techniques, esophageal reconstruction, results, postoperative complications, and follow-up treatment were analyzed.ResultsThe beginning time of performing ILESE preoperation was 53.4 ± 39.4 days after birth, and the age of esophageal reconstruction was 122.2 ± 70.3 days after birth in 60 cases. The gap length of proximal and distal esophageal segments which were evaluated the first time at admission was 4.8 ± 1.3 vertebral bodies, whereas the gap before anastomosis was −0.46 ± 0.90 vertebral bodies. Among the patients with esophageal primary-anastomosis, 55 received thoracoscopic surgery, and 5 underwent thoracotomy in the early stage. Of the 60 children with ILESE, 58 underwent end-to-end esophagostomy, of which 17 cases were combined with circular esophagotomy (livaditis), and 2 cases of esophageal lengthening were combined with the reversal of the ligulate loop of the proximal esophagus (flap). Overall, 59 cases were cured (98.3%), and 1 patient died of respiratory failure postoperatively. All patients were followed up for 7–96 months. Postoperative anastomotic leakage occurred in 16 patients (27.6%), all of whom were successfully treated conservatively. Anastomotic stenosis occurred in 49 cases (83.1%), all of which were successfully managed by non-surgical treatment, including 12.7 ± 9.3 times of esophageal balloon dilatation and 2 cases of stent dilatation. Gastroesophageal reflux occurred in 44 patients (74.6%), including associated or acquired esophageal hiatal hernia in 22 patients, and Nissen fundoplication was performed in 17 patients.ConclusionsILESE is an effective method for prolonging the proximal and distal esophagus of the LGEA to reconstruct esophageal continuity using its esophageal tissue, with an efficacy rate of 93.75%. Postoperative anastomotic stricture and gastroesophageal reflux are common and require long-term, standardized follow-up and treatment

    PurposeTo investigate the mechanisms of Klebsiella pneumoniae-induced pyogenic liver abscess (PLA).MethodsForty-three K. pneumoniae strains from PLAs and 436 from non-PLAs were collected. Their differences were compared for virulence genes and factors, sequence types, and serotypes. Virulence genes wzi, wzy-K1, and wzi+wzy-K1 were deleted in K. pneumoniae NTUH-K2044. Various analyses, such as transmission electron microscopy, neutrophil killing tests, and mouse lethality tests, were used to confirm the consequent changes.ResultsDifferences were found between K. pneumoniae strains from PLA and non-PLA samples for virulence genes and factors, including metabolism genes (allS and peg-344), capsular polysaccharide (CPS)-synthesis channel gene (wzy-K1), CPS-regulating genes (p-rmpA, p-rmpA2, and c-rmpA), and siderophore genes (iucA and iroN). When wzy-K1 was positive, the difference between PLA and non-PLA samples was only observed with c-rmpA. Δwzi, Δwzy-K1, and ΔwziΔwzy-K1 strains reverted to hypovirulence. In the Kupffer cell stimulation assay, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-12, IL-10, and transforming growth factor-β secretions were found to be equivalent in NTUH-K2044, Δwzi, Δwzy-K1, and ΔwziΔwzy-K1 groups. Lower IL-1β and higher tumor necrosis factor-α secretions were observed for Δwzi, Δwzy-K1, and ΔwziΔwzy-K1.ConclusionsHypercapsule production is the cornerstone of hypervirulence, regardless of exopolysaccharides. K1 K. pneumoniae-induced PLA may decrease core inflammatory cytokines rather than increase anti-inflammatory cytokines. Exopolysaccharides could also attenuate the inflammatory response to aid in the immune escape of K. pneumoniae

    Internal Architectural Patterns of Bar Fingers Within Digitate Shallow-Water Delta: Insights from the Shallow Core, GPR and Delft3D Simulation Data of the Ganjiang Delta, China

    Digitate shallow-water deltas are commonly found in modern lakes and bays, as well as within cratonic petroliferous basins. They develop one or multiple sinuous finger-like sands (i.e., bar fingers), including high-RSI (sinuosity ratio of distributary channel and bar finger ≥1) and low-RSI (RSI 10°) compared with those in the supplying river. This dip angle exhibits a negative relationship with downstream distance and a positive exponential relationship with lateral migration distance. Silty drapes become dense along the migration direction of the distributary channel. The levee develops multiple horizontal muddy accretion beds. The high-RSI bar finger develops a large number (>3) of accretion beds in mouth bars with high dip angles, and a large number of accretion beds in thick levees, compared with the low-RSI bar finger. The results of this paper provide insights into the prediction and development of cratonic digitate shallow-water delta reservoirs

    Exogenous trehalose improves growth under limiting nitrogen through upregulation of nitrogen metabolism

    The trehalose (Tre) pathway has strong effects on growth and development in plants through regulation of carbon metabolism. Altering either Tre or trehalose 6-phosphate (T6P) can improve growth and productivity of plants as observed under different water availability. As yet, there are no reports of the effects of modification of Tre orT6P on plant performance under limiting nutrition. Here we report that nitrogen (N) metabolism is positively affected by exogenous application of Tre in nitrogen-deficient growing conditions. Spraying foliage of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) with trehalose partially alleviated symptoms of nitrogen deficiency through upregulation of nitrate and ammonia assimilation and increasing activities of nitrate reductase (NR), glycolate oxidase (GO), glutamine synthetase (GS) and glutamine oxoglutarate aminotransferase (GOGAT) with concomitant changes in ammonium (NH4 +) and nitrate (NO3 −) concentrations, glutamine and amino acids. Chlorophyll and total nitrogen content of leaves and rates of photosynthesis were increased compared to nitrogen-deficient plants without applied Tre. Total plant biomass accumulation was also higher in Tre -fed nitrogen-deficient plants, with a smaller proportion of dry weight partitioned to roots, compared to nitrogen-deficient plants without applied Tre. Consistent with higher nitrogen assimilation and growth, Tre application reduced foliar starch. Minimal effects of Tre feeding were observed on nitrogen-sufficient plants. The data show, for the first time, significant stimulatory effects of exogenous Tre on nitrogen metabolism and growth in plants growing under deficient nitrogen. Under such adverse conditions metabolism is regulated for survival rather than productivity. Application of Tre can alter this regulation towards maintenance of productive functions under low nitrogen. This has implications for considering approaches to modifying the Tre pathway for to improve crop nitrogen-use efficiency and production

    Peripheral Dopamine Controlled by Gut Microbes Inhibits Invariant Natural Killer T Cell-Mediated Hepatitis

    Neurotransmitters have been shown to regulate immune responses, and thereby are critically related to autoimmune diseases. Here we showed that depletion of dopaminergic neurons significantly promoted activation of hepatic iNKT cells and augmented concanavalin A (Con A)-induced liver injury. The suppressive effect of dopamine on iNKT cells was mediated by D1-like receptor-PKA pathway. Clearance of gut microbiota by antibiotic cocktail reduced synthesis of dopamine in intestines and exacerbated liver damage, and that could be restored by recovery of gut microbiota or replenishment of D1-like receptor agonist. Our results demonstrate that peripheral dopamine controlled by gut microbes inhibits IL4 and IFNγ production in iNKT cells and suppresses iNKT cell-mediated hepatitis. Together, we propose a gut microbe-nervous system-immune system regulatory axis in modulating autoimmune hepatitis
