    Spontaneous spin ordering of Dirac spin liquid in a magnetic field

    The Dirac spin liquid was proposed to be the ground state of the spin-1/2 Kagome antiferromagnets. In a magnetic field BB, we show that the state with Fermi pocket is unstable to the Landau level (LL) state. The LL state breaks the spin rotation around the axis of the magnetic field. We find that the LL state has an in-plane 120∘^{\circ} q=0q=0 magnetization MM which scales with the external field M∼BαM\sim B^{\alpha}, where α\alpha is an intrinsic calculable universal number of the Dirac spin liquid. We discuss the related experimental implications which can be used to detect the possible Dirac spin liquid phase in Herbertsmithite ZnCu3_3(OH)6_6Cl2_2.Comment: rewritten for clarit

    Tianditu is China’s first state-sponsored web mapping service. Beijing considers Tianditu part and parcel of its burgeoning endeavor to build a ‘digital China’. The Chinese state created Tianditu to regain some of the ground lost when its monopoly on geographic information was effectively broken. This effort goes hand in hand with Beijing’s intention to compete with and shrink the space occupied by Google mapping services (Google Maps, Google Earth, etc.). Although Tianditu does bestow a certain degree of power on civilian users to interact with and explore geographic data, for political and social reasons the Chinese state tightly controls Tianditu. It is a tool that the regime uses to maintain political power and push ideologies it supports. This type of top-down reinforcement of static geographic knowledge is a far cry from the concept of civilian empowerment as understood in liberal democracies

    Characterization of fractional-quantum-Hall-effect quasiparticles

    Composite fermions in a partially filled quasi-Landau level may be viewed as quasielectrons of the underlying fractional quantum Hall state, suggesting that a quasielectron is simply a dressed electron, as often is true in other interacting electron systems, and as a result has the same intrinsic charge and exchange statistics as an electron. This paper discusses how this result is reconciled with the earlier picture in which quasiparticles are viewed as fractionally-charged fractional-statistics ``solitons". While the two approaches provide the same answers for the long-range interactions between the quasiparticles, the dressed-electron description is more conventional and unifies the view of quasiparticle dynamics in and beyond the fractional quantum Hall regime.Comment: 11 pages, latex, no figure

    Learning Styles of Undergraduate and Graduate Physical Therapy Students in Taiwan

    AbstractThe research was conducted to identify the learning styles of undergraduate and graduate physical therapy students in Taiwan and to examine the associations between learning style and academic performance. Basic data and Kolb's Learning Style Inventory were obtained from 52 participants from one university. The most commonly occurring style of learner was assimilator (44%), followed by diverger (23%), accommodator (15%), and converger (17%). There was no significant difference in academic performance among the four different styles of learners. Qualitative analyses provided further understanding of the preferred learning and teaching strategies. The different strategies are recommended to meet students’ learning preferences

    Structural study in Highly Compressed BiFeO3 Epitaxial Thin Films on YAlO3

    We report a study on the thermodynamic stability and structure analysis of the epitaxial BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films grown on YAlO3 (YAO) substrate. First we observe a phase transition of MC-MA-T occurs in thin sample (<60 nm) with an utter tetragonal-like phase (denoted as MII here) with a large c/a ratio (~1.23). Specifically, MII phase transition process refers to the structural evolution from a monoclinic MC structure at room temperature to a monoclinic MA at higher temperature (150oC) and eventually to a presence of nearly tetragonal structure above 275oC. This phase transition is further confirmed by the piezoforce microscopy measurement, which shows the rotation of polarization axis during the phase transition. A systematic study on structural evolution with thickness to elucidate the impact of strain state is performed. We note that the YAO substrate can serve as a felicitous base for growing T-like BFO because this phase stably exists in very thick film. Thick BFO films grown on YAO substrate exhibit a typical "morphotropic-phase-boundary"-like feature with coexisting multiple phases (MII, MI, and R) and a periodic stripe-like topography. A discrepancy of arrayed stripe morphology in different direction on YAO substrate due to the anisotropic strain suggests a possibility to tune the MPB-like region.
