    Phonon-induced linewidths of graphene electronic states

    The linewidths of the electronic bands originating from the electron-phonon coupling in graphene are analyzed based on model tight-binding calculations and experimental angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. Our calculations confirm the prediction that the high-energy optical phonons provide the most essential contribution to the phonon-induced linewidth of the two upper occupied σ\sigma bands near the Γˉ\bar{\Gamma}-point. For larger binding energies of these bands, as well as for the π\pi band, we find evidence for a substantial lifetime broadening from interband scattering πσ\pi \rightarrow \sigma and σπ\sigma \rightarrow \pi, respectively, driven by the out-of-plane ZA acoustic phonons. The essential features of the calculated σ\sigma band linewidths are in agreement with recent published ARPES data [F. Mazzola et al., Phys.~Rev.~B. 95, 075430 (2017)] and of the π\pi band linewidth with ARPES data presented here.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Cellular automaton model of precipitation/dissolution coupled with solute transport

    Precipitation/dissolution reactions coupled with solute transport are modelled as a cellular automaton in which solute molecules perform a random walk on a regular lattice and react according to a local probabilistic rule. Stationary solid particles dissolve with a certain probability and, provided solid is already present or the solution is saturated, solute particles have a probability to precipitate. In our simulation of the dissolution of a solid block inside uniformly flowing water we obtain solid precipitation downstream from the original solid edge, in contrast to the standard reaction-transport equations. The observed effect is the result of fluctuations in solute density and diminishes when we average over a larger ensemble. The additional precipitation of solid is accompanied by a substantial reduction in the relatively small solute concentration. The model is appropriate for the study of the r\^ole of intrinsic fluctuations in the presence of reaction thresholds and can be employed to investigate porosity changes associated with the carbonation of cement.Comment: LaTeX file, 13 pages.     Application of a Bayesian Method to Absorption Spectral-Line Finding in Simulated ASKAP Data

    The large spectral bandwidth and wide field of view of the Australian SKA Pathfinder radio telescope will open up a completely new parameter space for large extragalactic HI surveys. Here we focus on identifying and parametrising HI absorption lines which occur in the line of sight towards strong radio continuum sources. We have developed a method for simultaneously finding and fitting HI absorption lines in radio data by using multi-nested sampling, a Bayesian Monte Carlo algorithm. The method is tested on a simulated ASKAP data cube, and is shown to be reliable at detecting absorption lines in low signal-to-noise data without the need to smooth or alter the data. Estimation of the local Bayesian evidence statistic provides a quantitative criterion for assigning significance to a detection and selecting between competing analytical line-profile models.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures and 1 table; accepted for publication in PAS

    An evolutionary perspective on the kinome of malaria parasites

    Malaria parasites belong to an ancient lineage that diverged very early from the main branch of eukaryotes. The approximately 90-member plasmodial kinome includes a majority of eukaryotic protein kinases that clearly cluster within the AGC, CMGC, TKL, CaMK and CK1 groups found in yeast, plants and mammals, testifying to the ancient ancestry of these families. However, several hundred millions years of independent evolution, and the specific pressures brought about by first a photosynthetic and then a parasitic lifestyle, led to the emergence of unique features in the plasmodial kinome. These include taxon-restricted kinase families, and unique peculiarities of individual enzymes even when they have homologues in other eukaryotes. Here, we merge essential aspects of all three malaria-related communications that were presented at the Evolution of Protein Phosphorylation meeting, and propose an integrated discussion of the specific features of the parasite's kinome and phosphoproteome

    Ocean gravity and geoid determination

    Gravity anomalies have been recovered in the North Atlantic and the Indian Ocean regions. Comparisons of 63 2 deg x 2 deg mean free air gravity anomalies recovered in the North Atlantic area and 24 5 deg x 5 deg mean free air gravity anomalies in the Indian Ocean area with surface gravimetric measurements have shown agreement to + or - 8 mgals for both solutions. Geoids derived from the altimeter solutions are consistent with altimetric sea surface height data to within the precision of the data, about + or - 2 meters

    A study of possible sea state information in the sample and hold gate statistics for the GEOS-3 satellite altimeter

    The statistical variations in the sample gate outputs of the GEOS-3 satellite altimeter were studied for possible sea state information. After examination of a large number of statistical characteristics of the altimeter waveforms, it was found that the best sea predictor for H-1/3 in the range of 0 to 3 meters was the 75th percentile of sample and hold gate number 11

    Conodonts, Corals and Stromatoporoids from Subsurface Lower Devonian in the Northparkes Porphyry District of Central Western New South Wales and their Regional Stratigraphic Implications

    Documented in this report is a small fauna recovered from an unnamed stratigraphic unit of bioclastic limestone, black shale and carbonaceous mudstone intersected in a drill hole (NPM-GD871) undertaken by CMOC-Northparkes Mines in the Northparkes porphyry district, located ca 30 km NW of Parkes, central western New South Wales. It includes six conodont species (Panderodus unicostatus, Pandorinellina exigua, Pelekysgnathus sp., Wurmiella excavata, Zieglerodina remscheidensis and gen. et sp. indet.), one rugose coral (Microplasma ronense), three tabulate coral species (Favosites duni, Squameofavosites bryani and Thamnopora minor) and one stromatoporoid species (Densastroma sp.). Faunal analysis indicates a maximum age of late Lochkovian and a minimum age of Pragian for this unit, equivalent to the upper part of the Derriwong Group. The fauna is also comparable with those recovered from the Jerula Limestone Member of the Gleninga Formation (upper part of the Yarra Yarra Creek Group) exposed farther west. Conodont data documented here suggest that the base of the Derriwong Group is diachronous across the region, and on the eastern flank of the Tullamore Syncline has a minimum age of the late Pragian rather than early Lochkovian as currently accepted

    Comparative analysis of rigidity across protein families

    We present a comparative study in which 'pebble game' rigidity analysis is applied to multiple protein crystal structures, for each of six different protein families. We find that the main-chain rigidity of a protein structure at a given hydrogen bond energy cutoff is quite sensitive to small structural variations, and conclude that the hydrogen bond constraints in rigidity analysis should be chosen so as to form and test specific hypotheses about the rigidity of a particular protein. Our comparative approach highlights two different characteristic patterns ('sudden' or 'gradual') for protein rigidity loss as constraints are removed, in line with recent results on the rigidity transitions of glassy networks
