SN~1991T: Reflections of Past Glory
We have obtained photometry and spectra of SN~1991T which extend more than
1000 days past maximum light, by far the longest a SN~Ia has been followed.
Although SN~1991T exhibited nearly normal photometric behavior in the first 400
days following maximum, by 600 days its decline had slowed, and by 950~days the
supernova brightness was consistent with a constant apparent magnitude of
. Spectra near maximum showed minor variations on the SN~Ia theme
which grew less conspicuous during the exponential decline. At 270 days the
nebular spectrum was composed of Fe and Co lines common to SNe~Ia. However, by
750 days past maximum light, these lines had shifted in wavelength, and were
superimposed on a strong blue continuum. The luminosity of SN~1991T at 950 days
is more than ~ergs~s with a rate of
decline of less than mags/100~days. We show that this emission is likely
to be light that was emitted by SN~1991T near maximum light which has reflected
from foreground dust, much like the light echos observed around SN~1987A.Comment: 15 pages (includes figures and tables) uuencoded compressed

The steric influence of extra-framework cations on framework flexibility:An LTA case study
The theoretical extent of framework flexibility of Zeolite A (LTA) in response to the steric and geometric effects of different Si/Al compositions and extra-framework cation content has been explored using GASP software. Flexibility windows and compression mechanisms for siliceous LTA and aluminosilicate Na-LTA, Ca-LTA and K-LTA have been modelled. As expected, relatively small cations in the zeolite pores have little effect on the range of flexibility observed. Aluminosilicate LTA, Na-LTA and Ca-LTA frameworks exhibit identical flexibility windows and these frameworks also follow the same compression mechanisms. The introduction of larger K+ ions, however, results in greater steric hindrance. This restricts the flexibility of the framework and alters the compression mechanism to accommodate these larger cations. It is shown that the limits of the flexibility window of Zeolite A are dependent on framework aluminium content and extra-framework cation size.</p

Design of a randomized superiority trial of a brief couple treatment for PTSD.
Interpersonal difficulties are common among veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and are associated with poorer treatment response. Treatment outcomes for PTSD, including relationship functioning, improve when partners are included and engaged in the therapy process. Cognitive-behavioral conjoint therapy for PTSD (CBCT) is a manualized 15-session intervention designed for couples in which one partner has PTSD. CBCT was developed specifically to treat PTSD, engage a partner in treatment, and improve interpersonal functioning. However, recent research suggests that an abbreviated CBCT protocol may lead to sufficient gains in PTSD and relationship functioning, and yield lower dropout rates. Likewise, many veterans report a preference for receiving psychological treatments through clinical videoteleconferencing (CVT) rather than traditional face-to-face modalities that require travel to VA clinics. This manuscript describes the development and implementation of a novel randomized controlled trial (RCT) that examines the efficacy of an abbreviated 8-session version of CBCT ("brief CBCT," or B-CBCT), and compares the efficacy of this intervention delivered via CVT to traditional in-person platforms. Veterans and their partners were randomized to receive B-CBCT in a traditional Veterans Affairs office-based setting (B-CBCT-Office), CBCT through CVT with the veteran and partner at home (B-CBCT-Home), or an in office-delivered, couple-based psychoeducation control condition (PTSD Family Education). This study is the first RCT designed to investigate the delivery of B-CBCT specifically to veterans with PTSD and their partners, as well as to examine the delivery of B-CBCT over a CVT modality; findings could increase access to care to veterans with PTSD and their partners
Cr RLK 1L receptor‐like kinases HERK 1 and ANJEA are female determinants of pollen tube reception
Communication between the gametophytes is vital for angiosperm fertilisation. Multiple CrRLK1L‐type receptor kinases prevent premature pollen tube burst, while another CrRLK1L protein, FERONIA (FER), is required for pollen tube reception in the female gametophyte. We report here the identification of two additional CrRLK1L homologues, HERCULES RECEPTOR KINASE 1 (HERK1) and ANJEA (ANJ), which act redundantly to promote pollen tube growth arrest at the synergid cells. HERK1 and ANJ localise to the filiform apparatus of the synergid cells in unfertilised ovules, and in herk1 anj mutants, a majority of ovules remain unfertilised due to pollen tube overgrowth, together indicating that HERK1 and ANJ act as female determinants for fertilisation. As in fer mutants, the synergid cell‐specific, endomembrane protein NORTIA (NTA) is not relocalised after pollen tube reception; however, unlike fer mutants, reactive oxygen species levels are unaffected in herk1 anj double mutants. Both ANJ and HERK1 associate with FER and its proposed co‐receptor LORELEI (LRE) in planta. Together, our data indicate that HERK1 and ANJ act with FER to mediate female–male gametophyte interactions during plant fertilisation
DREADD activation of pedunculopontine cholinergic neurons reverses motor deficits and restores striatal dopamine signaling in parkinsonian rats
The brainstem-based pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) traditionally associates with motor function, but undergoes extensive degeneration during Parkinson’s disease (PD), which correlates with axial motor deficits. PPN-Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) can alleviate certain symptoms, but its mecha-nism(s) of action remains unknown. We previously characterized rats hemi-intranigrally injected with the proteasomal inhibitor lactacystin, as an accurate preclinical model of PD. Here we used a combination of chemogenetics with Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging for in vivo in-terrogation of discrete neural networks in this rat model of PD. Stimulation of excitatory DREADDs (Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs) expressed within PPN cholinergic neurons activated residual nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons to produce pro-found motor recovery, which correlated with striatal dopamine efflux as well as restored dopamine receptor (DR) 1- and DR2-based medium spiny neuron (MSN) activity, as was ascertained with c-Fos-based immunohistochemistry and stereological cell counts. By revealing that the improved axi-al-related motor functions seen in PD patients receiving PPN-DBS may be due to stimulation of remaining PPN cholinergic neurons interacting with dopaminergic ones in both the Substantia Nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and the striatum, our data strongly favor the PPN cholinergic-midbrain dopaminergic connectome as mechanism for PPN-DBS’s therapeutic effects. These findings have implications for refining PPD-DBS as a promising treatment modality available to PD patients
Group A Streptococcus M1T1 Intracellular Infection of Primary Tonsil Epithelial Cells Dampens Levels of Secreted IL-8 Through the Action of SpyCEP.
Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus; GAS) commonly causes pharyngitis in children and adults, with severe invasive disease and immune sequelae being an infrequent consequence. The ability of GAS to invade the host and establish infection likely involves subversion of host immune defenses. However, the signaling pathways and innate immune responses of epithelial cells to GAS are not well-understood. In this study, we utilized RNAseq to characterize the inflammatory responses of primary human tonsil epithelial (TEpi) cells to infection with the laboratory-adapted M6 strain JRS4 and the M1T1 clinical isolate 5448. Both strains induced the expression of genes encoding a wide range of inflammatory mediators, including IL-8. Pathway analysis revealed differentially expressed genes between mock and JRS4- or 5448-infected TEpi cells were enriched in transcription factor networks that regulate IL-8 expression, such as AP-1, ATF-2, and NFAT. While JRS4 infection resulted in high levels of secreted IL-8, 5448 infection did not, suggesting that 5448 may post-transcriptionally dampen IL-8 production. Infection with 5448ΔcepA, an isogenic mutant lacking the IL-8 protease SpyCEP, resulted in IL-8 secretion levels comparable to JRS4 infection. Complementation of 5448ΔcepA and JRS4 with a plasmid encoding 5448-derived SpyCEP significantly reduced IL-8 secretion by TEpi cells. Our results suggest that intracellular infection with the pathogenic GAS M1T1 clone induces a strong pro-inflammatory response in primary tonsil epithelial cells, but modulates this host response by selectively degrading the neutrophil-recruiting chemokine IL-8 to benefit infection
Lenalidomide and metronomic melphalan for CMML and higher risk MDS: A phase 2 clinical study with biomarkers of angiogenesis
AbstractMetronomic, low dose chemotherapy may have anti-angiogenic effects and augment the effects of lenalidomide in MDS and CMML. We evaluated the clinical efficacy, tolerability and anti-angiogenic effects of melphalan 2mg and lenalidomide 10mg for 21 days/28 in CMML (n=12) and higher risk MDS (n=8) patients in a prospective phase II study. The primary endpoint was overall response and secondary endpoints included survival, progression-free survival, toxicity and biomarkers of angiogenesis. The median age was 73 years, 55% were pretreated and transfusion dependent. The overall response rate was 3(15%) of 19 evaluable patients but 25% in CMML and 33% in pCMML. Dose reductions and/or delays were common due to myelosuppression. Transient spikes in circulating endothelial cells that declined below baseline were seen in responders and patients with CMML, suggesting anti-angiogenic activity. In conclusion, lenalidomide and metronomic low dose melphalan demonstrate signals of clinical and possible anti-angiogenic activity in patients with pCMML that require future validation. Model-independent source imaging using two-pion correlations in 2 to 8A GeV Au + Au collisions
We report a particle source imaging analysis based on two-pion correlations
in high multiplicity Au + Au collisions at beam energies between 2 and 8A GeV.
We apply the imaging technique introduced by Brown and Danielewicz, which
allows a model-independent extraction of source functions with useful accuracy
out to relative pion separations of about 20 fm. The extracted source functions
have Gaussian shapes. Values of source functions at zero separation are almost
constant across the energy range under study. Imaging results are found to be
consistent with conventional source parameters obtained from a multidimensional
HBT analysis.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
UBVRIz Light Curves of 51 Type II Supernovae
We present a compilation of UBV RIz light curves of 51 type II supernovae
discovered during the course of four different surveys during 1986 to 2003: the
Cerro Tololo Supernova Survey, the Calan/Tololo Supernova Program (C&T), the
Supernova Optical and Infrared Survey (SOIRS), and the Carnegie Type II
Supernova Survey (CATS). The photometry is based on template-subtracted images
to eliminate any potential host galaxy light contamination, and calibrated from
foreground stars. This work presents these photometric data, studies the color
evolution using different bands, and explores the relation between the
magnitude at maximum brightness and the brightness decline parameter (s) from
maximum light through the end of the recombination phase. This parameter is
found to be shallower for redder bands and appears to have the best correlation
in the B band. In addition, it also correlates with the plateau duration, being
thus shorter (longer) for larger (smaller) s values.Comment: 110 pages, 9 Figures, 6 Tables, accepted in A
