Problem The Greater New York Conference (GNYC) is located in what is considered the media capital of the world. Media and technology have changed our lives in meaningful ways, both globally and locally. The church in its local context, in this technological age, is struggling to adapt technology in meaningful and effective ways to impact discipleship and evangelism practices. I observed that the administrators and most of the pastors in the GNYC do not understand how to adapt today’s media technology effectively, and therefore, lack a vision regarding how this tool can be effectively adapted for ministry delivery. Method A training strategy on new media technology was done in three phases. First, a minimum of four digital presentations was given to a large group of GNYC pastors. Second, pastors elected to become participants in a small, peer-training group of a minimum of five participants and a maximum of ten for reporting purposes. An annual ministers’ technology conference was established as an ongoing effort towards continuing education training in new media technology for the general pastoral workforce. Results A series of five digital presentations were made to the pastors in the GNYC to increase awareness of technology in ministry. Eight pastors became a part of the yearlong peer group training on new media technology in areas such as social media, Facebook, Twitter, webstreaming, mobile apps and texting programs, blogging, digital discipleship and evangelism tools. All eight participants were successful in adapting new media technology within their ministry context. An annual Ministers Technology Conference was established within the conference. A training strategy for possible organizational adaptation called ITEM emerged from the training. Conclusion New media technology is not to be feared. Pastors can develop an effective strategy for ministry adaptation unique to their local ministry. This adaptation may be quick or slow depending on personnel, budget and timing. The pastors in this study were trained and, in most cases, adapted multiple new media technologies successfully to their ministry context. This represents a template for the ever-new and changing world of technology which, when rightly adopted, can be a powerful tool for effective discipleship and evangelism

Minimum Contacts Confused and Reconfused--Variations on a Theme by International Shoe--Or Is This Trip Necessary

    Get PDF
In response to the ever increasing demands put on the state court system by the spiraling incidence of interstate commerce and transportation, and recognizing the need for the judicial system to be able to adapt to the chameleonic circumstances of the times, the United States Supreme Court in International Shoe handed down a view of due process which would give the states the flexibility and discretion they so badly needed. In the years since International Shoe, the California courts have interpreted, converted, and perverted the simple test of fairness to the point that it is no longer responsive to the times. The time has come to reform our state court application of personal jurisdiction, to conform with the minimum contacts and fair play standards which the courts claim, but refuse to follow. The California Supreme Court had the opportunity, in Buckeye Boiler v. Superior Court to take that step. The opportunity should have been seized, but it was not. After the slow start 2-302 is emerging as an important aspect of commercial law. The increase in case activity as well as the diversity of potential uses arguably compels a reevaluation of California’s position of 2-302. Thus, the purpose of this note is to reexamine the efficacy of the arguments against the adoption of 2-302 in light of recent judicial interpretations in other jurisdictions and the growing importance of 2-302 in the contemporary commercial setting…Such unrest has also become a major legal problem. In the light of these changes, it is evident that a rational theory of the legal relationship between the student and the university can develop within the context of the university as an instrument of society. In this concept, student-university relationships cease to be the private affairs the university has ling considered them. The university’s responsibility to its students is a responsibility to society

An appraisal of housing satisfaction in South Africa low income housing scheme

    Get PDF
Abstract: Post-occupancy evaluation techniques have been developed to provide a means for evaluating occupant responses to changes in an environment and linking this response to physical measures of that environment. POE has been used to evaluate the performance of buildings after they have been built and occupied for some time. This paper presents findings on the social and physical factors which influence residential satisfaction in four different government Housing Subsidy locations in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Data obtained from the occupant survey were analyzed through the use of descriptive statistics. Findings arising from the survey revealed that the respondents were satisfied with their overall housing situation, but had complaints about certain aspects of the housing unit. However, the respondents informed that most of their housing needs were not being met. Also, a comparison is also made of the perceived factors of dissatisfaction amongst the housing subsidy occupants. It is recommended that a wider systematic coverage of the subject through investigation and diagnostic POE and occupants’ need assessment should be carried out in housing subsidy schemes in South Africa

Selection of procurement systems in the South African construction industry : an exploratory study

    Get PDF
Purpose of this paper: Procurement systems are vital in ensuring the successful implementation of construction projects precisely in all the phases of any particular project. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate in a systematic manner the factors that influence the selection of a procurement system in the South African construction industry. Research methodology: An extensive theory and literature review of procurement systems was conducted. The literature reviewed included a sample of case studies of procurement systems successfully implemented in completed building and civil engineering projects in South Africa. A questionnaire using a four-round Delphi survey method was used to conduct the empirical study in order to obtain participants' opinions about factors influencing the selection of procurement systems as well as the utility value of various procurement systems on each factor as identified. Finally, data analysis of both qualitative and quantitative techniques was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Findings: After qualitative analysis, findings of the literature reviewed suggest that factors that influence the selection of procurement systems cut across all the phases of the project as identified in this paper. Therefore, these factors are categorically classified into internal and external factors. Factors from the internal environment were further classified into client characteristics and project characteristics, with client characteristics comprising of variables such as clients' level of knowledge and control, political and social consideration, familiarity of procurement systems, competition, funding arrangement, government public/private sector projects and risk allocation whereas project characteristics comprise of factors (variables) such as size and technical complexity of the project, influence of the project life cycle, expedited project delivery, time, quality and price certainty. Factors from the external environment include variables such as market competition, information technology, regulatory environment, natural causes and globalisation. Research limitations: In terms of its scope this study focused on both national and international literature reviews and the empirical survey of this study was conducted within South Africa. Its target participants were limited to civil engineers, quantity surveyors, construction/project managers, architects and contractors located in three provinces of South Africa, namely Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces. Value: This study investigates factors that influence the selection of procurement systems in South Africa for the purpose of assisting and guiding construction practitioners in selecting suitable procurement systems for their planned projects. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that due to changes in the construction industry both factors from the internal and external environments such as size and complexity of construction projects, macro and micro economic conditions, political and social and information technology prevailing, traditional procurement method need to be supplemented with contemporary procurement systems in order to meet the new demands of the industry
