Superconductivity in graphene stacks: from the bilayer to graphite
We study the superconducting phase transition, both in a graphene bilayer and
in graphite. For that purpose we derive the mean-field effective potential for
a stack of graphene layers presenting hopping between adjacent sheets. For
describing superconductivity, we assume there is an on-site attractive
interaction between electrons and determine the superconducting critical
temperature as a function of the chemical potential. This displays a
dome-shaped curve, in agreement with previous results for two-dimensional Dirac
fermions. We show that the hopping between adjacent layers increases the
critical temperature for small values of the chemical potential. Finally, we
consider a minimal model for graphite and show that the transition temperature
is higher than that for the graphene bilayer for small values of chemical
potential. This might explain why intrinsic superconductivity is observed in
graphite
Anisotropic Superparamagnetism of Monodispersive Cobalt-Platinum Nanocrystals
Based on the high-temperature organometallic route (Sun et al. Science 287,
1989 (2000)), we have synthesized powders containing CoPt_3 single crystals
with mean diameters of 3.3(2) nm and 6.0(2) nm and small log-normal widths
sigma=0.15(1). In the entire temperature range from 5 K to 400 K, the
zero-field cooled susceptibility chi(T) displays significant deviations from
ideal superparamagnetism. Approaching the Curie temperature of 450(10) K, the
deviations arise from the (mean-field) type reduction of the ferromagnetic
moments, while below the blocking temperature T_b, chi(T) is suppressed by the
presence of energy barriers, the distributions of which scale with the particle
volumes obtained from transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This indication
for volume anisotropy is supported by scaling analyses of the shape of the
magnetic absorption chi''(T,omega) which reveal distribution functions for the
barriers being also consistent with the volume distributions observed by TEM.
Above 200 K, the magnetization isotherms M(H,T) display Langevin behavior
providing 2.5(1) mu_B per CoPt_3 in agreement with reports on bulk and thin
film CoPt_3. The non-Langevin shape of the magnetization curves at lower
temperatures is for the first time interpreted as anisotropic
superparamagnetism by taking into account an anisotropy energy of the
nanoparticles E_A(T). Using the magnitude and temperature variation of E_A(T),
the mean energy barriers and 'unphysical' small switching times of the
particles obtained from the analyses of chi''(T,omega) are explained. Below T_b
hysteresis loops appear and are quantitatively described by a blocking model,
which also ignores particle interactions, but takes the size distributions from
TEM and the conventional field dependence of E_A into account.Comment: 12 pages with 10 figures and 1 table. Version accepted for

Ensuring HLA-matched platelet support requires an ethnic diverse donor population
BACKGROUND: Patients refractory for platelet transfusions benefit from human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched platelet transfusions. Differences in ethnic background of patients and donors could hamper the availability of sufficient numbers of HLA-matched donors for all patients. We evaluated our HLA-matched donor program and explored the role of ethnic background of patients related to the number of available donors. METHODS: We performed a cohort study among consecutive patients who received HLA-matched platelet concentrates in the Netherlands between 1994 and 2017. The number of available matched donors was determined per patient. Haplotypes were constructed from genotypes with computer software (PyPop). Based on haplotypes, HaploStats, an algorithm from the National Marrow Donor Program, was used to assess the most likely ethnic background for patients with 5 or fewer and 30 or more donors. RESULTS: HLA typing was available for 19,478 donors in September 2017. A total of 1206 patients received 12,350 HLA-matched transfusions. A median of 83 (interquartile range, 18-266) donors were available per patient. For 95 (10.3%) patients, 5 or fewer donors were available. These patients were more likely to have an African American background, whereas patients with 30 or more donors were more often from Caucasian origin, compared with Caucasian origin for patients with 30 donors. CONCLUSION: Adequate transfusion support could be guaranteed for most but not all refractory patients. More non-Caucasian donors are required to ensure the availability of HLA-matched donors for all patients in the Netherlands
Effect of chemical composition on luminescence of thiol-stabilized CdTe nanocrystals
Judicious selection of the amount of surfactant during synthesis enables a drastic increase in the photoluminescence efficiency of aqueous CdTe nanocrystals (NCs) stabilized by thioglycolic acid (TGA). Elemental determination of the NCs was undertaken to identify the origin of this effect. The molar ratio of (Te + S) to Cd approached unity when the optimum amount of TGA was used during synthesis, whereas the number of S atoms originating from TGA molecules in one NC (2.6 nm of diameter) remained unchanged at 90 ± 3. This indicates that the core lattice composition at the beginning of synthesis, rather than the surface conditions, affects the photoluminescence efficiency of the NCs even after prolonged refluxing
UV and EUV Instruments
We describe telescopes and instruments that were developed and used for
astronomical research in the ultraviolet (UV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV)
regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The wavelength ranges covered by these
bands are not uniquely defined. We use the following convention here: The EUV
and UV span the regions ~100-912 and 912-3000 Angstroem respectively. The
limitation between both ranges is a natural choice, because the hydrogen Lyman
absorption edge is located at 912 Angstroem. At smaller wavelengths,
astronomical sources are strongly absorbed by the interstellar medium. It also
marks a technical limit, because telescopes and instruments are of different
design. In the EUV range, the technology is strongly related to that utilized
in X-ray astronomy, while in the UV range the instruments in many cases have
their roots in optical astronomy. We will, therefore, describe the UV and EUV
instruments in appropriate conciseness and refer to the respective chapters of
this volume for more technical details.Comment: To appear in: Landolt-Boernstein, New Series VI/4A, Astronomy,

Patterns, predictors and prognostic relevance of high-grade hematotoxicity after temozolomide or temozolomide-lomustine in the CeTeG/NOA-09 trial
PURPOSE: In the randomized phase III trial CeTeG/NOA-09, temozolomide (TMZ)/lomustine (CCNU) combination therapy was superior to TMZ in newly diagnosed MGMT methylated glioblastoma, albeit reporting more frequent hematotoxicity. Here, we analyze high grade hematotoxicity and its prognostic relevance in the trial population. METHODS: Descriptive and comparative analysis of hematotoxicity adverse events ≥ grade 3 (HAE) according to the Common Terminology of Clinical Adverse Events, version 4.0 was performed. The association of HAE with survival was assessed in a landmark analysis. Logistic regression analysis was performed to predict HAE during the concomitant phase of chemotherapy. RESULTS: HAE occurred in 36.4% and 28.6% of patients under CCNU/TMZ and TMZ treatment, respectively. The median onset of the first HAE was during concomitant chemotherapy (i.e. first CCNU/TMZ course or daily TMZ therapy), and 42.9% of patients with HAE receiving further courses experienced repeat HAE. Median HAE duration was similar between treatment arms (CCNU/TMZ 11.5; TMZ 13 days). Chemotherapy was more often discontinued due to HAE in CCNU/TMZ than in TMZ (19.7 vs. 6.3%, p = 0.036). The occurrence of HAE was not associated with survival differences (p = 0.76). Regression analysis confirmed older age (OR 1.08) and female sex (OR 2.47), but not treatment arm, as predictors of HAE. CONCLUSION: Older age and female sex are associated with higher incidence of HAE. Although occurrence of HAE was not associated with shorter survival, reliable prediction of patients at risk might be beneficial to allow optimal management of therapy and allocation of supportive measures. Search for Gravitational Waves Associated with Gamma-Ray Bursts Detected by Fermi and Swift during the LIGO-Virgo Run O3b
We search for gravitational-wave signals associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi and Swift satellites during the second half of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (2019 November 1 15:00 UTC-2020 March 27 17:00 UTC). We conduct two independent searches: A generic gravitational-wave transients search to analyze 86 GRBs and an analysis to target binary mergers with at least one neutron star as short GRB progenitors for 17 events. We find no significant evidence for gravitational-wave signals associated with any of these GRBs. A weighted binomial test of the combined results finds no evidence for subthreshold gravitational-wave signals associated with this GRB ensemble either. We use several source types and signal morphologies during the searches, resulting in lower bounds on the estimated distance to each GRB. Finally, we constrain the population of low-luminosity short GRBs using results from the first to the third observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. The resulting population is in accordance with the local binary neutron star merger rate. © 2022. The Author(s). Published by the American Astronomical Society
