    The Distance to IC 10 from Near-Infrared Observations of Cepheids

    We have measured the distance to the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 10 from near-infrared JHKJHK observations of Cepheids. The reddening-corrected distance modulus is 24.57±0.2124.57\pm0.21 mag or 0.82±0.080.82\pm 0.08 Mpc. This distance lies at the short end of the range of previous estimates, and is significantly more accurate than all prior determinations. At this distance, IC 10 is comparable in total mass to the Small Magellanic Cloud, but has much more vigorous star formation.Comment: 16 PostScript pages including 2 figures and 3 table, uuencoded compressed.     Effect of Magnetization Inhomogeneity on Magnetic Microtraps for Atoms

    We report on the origin of fragmentation of ultracold atoms observed on a permanent magnetic film atom chip. A novel technique is used to characterize small spatial variations of the magnetic field near the film surface using radio frequency spectroscopy of the trapped atoms. Direct observations indicate the fragmentation is due to a corrugation of the magnetic potential caused by long range inhomogeneity in the film magnetization. A model which takes into account two-dimensional variations of the film magnetization is consistent with the observations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Applied regional monitoring of the vernal advancement and retrogradation (Green wave effect) of natural vegetation in the Great Plains corridor

    The author has identified the following significant results. LANDSAT 2 has shown that digital data products can be effectively employed on a regional basis to monitor changes in vegetation conditions. The TV16 was successfully applied to an extended test site and the Great Plains Corridor in tests of the ability to assess green forage biomass on rangelands as an index to vegetation condition. A strategy for using TV16 on a regional basis was developed and tested. These studies have shown that: (1) for rangelands with good vegetative cover, such as most of the Great Plains, and which are not heavily infested with brush or undesirable weed species, the LANDSAT digital data can provide a good estimate (within 250 kg/ha) of the quantity of green forage biomass, and (2) at least five levels of pasture and range feed conditions can be adequately mapped for extended regions

    The Cepheids of NGC1866: A Precise Benchmark for the Extragalactic Distance Scale and Stellar Evolution from Modern UBVI Photometry

    We present the analysis of multiband time-series data for a sample of 24 Cepheids in the field of the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC1866. Very accurate BVI VLT photometry is combined with archival UBVI data, covering a large temporal window, to obtain precise mean magnitudes and periods with typical errors of 1-2% and of 1 ppm, respectively. These results represent the first accurate and homogeneous dataset for a substantial sample of Cepheid variables belonging to a cluster and hence sharing common distance, age and original chemical composition. Comparisons of the resulting multiband Period-Luminosity and Wesenheit relations to both empirical and theoretical results for the Large Magellanic Cloud are presented and discussed to derive the distance of the cluster and to constrain the mass-luminosity relation of the Cepheids. The adopted theoretical scenario is also tested by comparison with independent calibrations of the Cepheid Wesenheit zero point based on trigonometric parallaxes and Baade-Wesselink techniques. Our analysis suggests that a mild overshooting and/or a moderate mass loss can affect intermediate-mass stellar evolution in this cluster and gives a distance modulus of 18.50 +- 0.01 mag. The obtained V,I color-magnitude diagram is also analysed and compared with both synthetic models and theoretical isochrones for a range of ages and metallicities and for different efficiencies of core overshooting. As a result, we find that the age of NGC1866 is about 140 Myr, assuming Z = 0.008 and the mild efficiency of overshooting suggested by the comparison with the pulsation models.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted in MNRAS (2016 January 14

    The Anatomy of a Grid portal

    In this paper we introduce a new way to deal with Grid portals referring to our implementation. L-GRID is a light portal to access the EGEE/EGI Grid infrastructure via Web, allowing users to submit their jobs from a common Web browser in a few minutes, without any knowledge about the Grid infrastructure. It provides the control over the complete lifecycle of a Grid Job, from its submission and status monitoring, to the output retrieval. The system, implemented as client-server architecture, is based on the Globus Grid middleware. The client side application is based on a java applet; the server relies on a Globus User Interface. There is no need of user registration on the server side, and the user needs only his own X.509 personal certificate. The system is user-friendly, secure (it uses SSL protocol, mechanism for dynamic delegation and identity creation in public key infrastructures), highly customizable, open source, and easy to install. The X.509 personal certificate does not get out from the local machine. It allows to reduce the time spent for the job submission, granting at the same time a higher efficiency and a better security level in proxy delegation and management.Comment: 6 page

    [18F]Fluoro-2-Deoxy-D-Glucose Incorporation by MCF-7 Breast Tumour Cells In Vitro Is Modulated by Treatment with Tamoxifen, Doxorubicin, and Docetaxel: Relationship to Chemotherapy-Induced Changes in ATP Content, Hexokinase Activity, and Glucose Transport

    Breast tumours responding to chemotherapy exhibit decreased [18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ([18F]FDG) incorporation. Underlying mechanisms of these changes is poorly understood. Here, in MCF-7 cells, responding to chemotherapy drugs commonly utilised in the treatment of breast cancer, [18F]FDG incorporation and several pivotal factors associated with [18F]FDG incorporation investigated. Methods. IC50 and subclinical doxorubicin, docetaxel, and tamoxifen doses determined using MTT assay. [18F]FDG incorporation by cells treated with IC50 drug doses for 48 hours and 72 hours were determined and FDG dephosphorylation estimated by measuring loss of 18F from [18F]FDG-preincubated cells (pulse-chase). Glucose transport determined by measuring initial uptake rate of non-metabolised glucose analogue omethylglucose; hexokinase activity and ATP content measured in cell homogenates; Cell cycle distribution determined using flow cytometry of propidium iodide stained nuclei. Results. [18F]FDG incorporation and ATP content decreased in cells after 72 hours treatment with IC50 doses of tamoxifen, doxorubicin, and docetaxel compared with untreated controls. Decreased glucose transport and/or hexokinase activity accompanied decreased [18F]FDG incorporation by MCF-7 cells treated with tamoxifen or doxorubicin but not docetaxel. Conclusions. Tumour cell [18F]FDG incorporation along with ATP content decreased by treatment with tamoxifen, doxorubicin and docetaxel paralleling clinical observations for solid tumours.     Non Sequential Recursive Pair Substitution: Some Rigorous Results

    We present rigorous results on some open questions on NSRPS, non sequential recursive pairs substitution method (see Grassberger in \cite{G}). In particular, starting from the action of NSRPS on finite strings we define a corresponding natural action on measures and we prove that the iterated measure becomes asymptotically Markov. This certify the effectiveness of NSRPS as a tool for data compression and entropy estimation.Comment: 20 page

    Charge-induced conformational changes of dendrimers

    We study the effect of chargeable monomers on the conformation of dendrimers of low generation by computer simulations, employing bare Coulomb interactions. The presence of the latter leads to an increase in size of the dendrimer due to a combined effect of electrostatic repulsion and the presence of counterions within the dendrimer, and also enhances a shell-like structure for the monomers of different generations. In the resulting structures the bond-length between monomers, especially near the center, will increase to facilitate a more effective usage of space in the outer-regions of the dendrimer.Comment: 7 pages, 12 figure

    MHD Stellar and Disk Winds: Application to Planetary Nebulae

    MHD winds can emanate from both stars and surrounding accretion disks. It is of interest to know how much wind power is available and which (if either) of the two rotators dominates that power. We investigate this in the context of multi-polar planetary nebulae (PNe) and proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe), for which recent observations have revealed the need for a wind power source in excess of that available from radiation driving, and a possible need for magnetic shaping. We calculate the MHD wind power from a coupled disk and star, where the former results from binary disruption. The resulting wind powers depend only on the accretion rate and stellar properties. We find that if the stellar envelope were initially slowly rotating, the disk wind would dominate throughout the evolution. If the envelope of the star were rapidly rotating, the stellar wind could initially be of comparable power to the disk wind until the stellar wind carries away the star's angular momentum. Since an initially rapidly rotating star can have its spin and magnetic axes misaligned to the disk, multi-polar outflows can result from this disk wind system. For times greater than a spin-down time, the post-AGB stellar wind is slaved to the disk for both slow and rapid initial spin cases and the disk wind luminosity dominates. We find a reasonably large parameter space where a hybrid star+disk MHD driven wind is plausible and where both or either can account for PPNe and PNe powers. We also speculate on the morphologies which may emerge from the coupled system. The coupled winds might help explain the shapes of a number of remarkable multi-shell or multi-polar nebulae. Magnetic activity such as X-ray flares may be associated with the both central star and the disk and would be a valuable diagnostic for the dynamical role of MHD processes in PNe.Comment: ApJ accepted version, incorporating some important revisions. 25 Pages, LaTex, + 5 fig
