This paper examines main contributions o f the last thirty or forty years in which scholars belonging to different European and American schools make unreflected use of these three common places, and proposes a serial of theses in order to return to a reading of Theocritus bucolic-texts without the burden of the accumulated prejudices and errors.Fil: Weiss, Irene M.. Hércules en el Jardín de las Hespérides: recreación del mito en «Fieras afemina amor»

    Get PDF
The recreation of the myth of Hercules in Fieras afemina amor, the Calderonian mythological comedy composed on the occasion of the birthday of Queen Regent María Ana (December 1669), offers already at the Loa clear indications that invite an allusive and allegorical interpretation of the piece. In fact, in the intense hermeneutical debate about its greater or lesser political significance, part of the criticism has tried to find the concrete historical references of its complex and ingenious mythical architecture. In our pages we intend to show to what extent the novelties, contaminations and hybridizations that Calderón brings to the mythical material can help to highlight, from the distance of the artist in the elaboration of his work, relevant aspects of the contemporary situation

There is no reason to accept the perhaps to simple hypothesis that it should be possible to reduce all the compositions known as Anacreontics (Codex Palatinus 23, today Supplementum Graecum 384 of the National Library of Paris) to two or three metrical schemes. Why shouldn’t we rather see behind the metrical or prosodic failures an artistic intention? Our thesis is that we can accept the transmitted metrical form of the verses as theme with variations on the basis of the archaic, classical and hellenistic models according to their theoretical analysis in the contemporary metrical handbooks

An Updated Review of Atmospheric Mercury

    Get PDF
The atmosphere is a key component of the biogeochemical cycle of mercury, acting as a reservoir, transport mechanism, and facilitator of chemical reactions. The chemical and physical behavior of atmospheric mercury determines how, when, and where emitted mercury pollution impacts ecosystems. In this review, we provide current information about what is known and what remains uncertain regarding mercury in the atmosphere. We discuss new ambient, laboratory, and theoretical information about the chemistry of mercury in various atmospheric media. We review what is known about mercury in and on solid- and liquid-phase aerosols. We present recent findings related to wet and dry deposition and spatial and temporal trends in atmospheric mercury concentrations. We also review atmospheric measurement methods that are in wide use and those that are currently under development

Case Report Megace Mystery: A Case of Central Adrenal Insufficiency

Megestrol acetate (MA) is a synthetic progestin with both antineoplastic and orexigenic properties. In addition to its effects on the progesterone receptor, MA also binds the glucocorticoid receptor. Some patients receiving MA therapy have been reported to develop clinical features of glucocorticoid excess, while others have experienced the clinical syndrome of cortisol deficiencyeither following withdrawal of MA therapy or during active treatment. We describe a patient who presented with clinical and biochemical features of central adrenal insufficiency. Pituitary function was otherwise essentially normal, and the etiology of the isolated ACTH suppression was initially unclear. The use of an exogenous glucocorticoid was suspected but was initially denied by the patient; ultimately, the culprit medication was uncovered when a synthetic steroid screen revealed the presence of MA. The patient's symptoms improved after she was switched to hydrocortisone. Clinicians should be aware of the potential effects of MA on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis

Protein tyrosine kinase inhibitors are currently an important drug class in the treatment of leukemia. They represent targeted cancer therapy and have become the treatment of choice in chronic myeloid leukemia. Tyrosine kinases are enzymes expressed in multiple tissues and are involved in several signaling pathways influencing cellular growth. Below we describe a patient who developed an unusual complication of tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy: thyrotoxicosis due to destructive thyroiditis. We review the pathophysiology of tyrosine kinase inhibitor-induced thyroid dysfunction particularly with regard to new second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors

Schur functions and their realizations in the slice hyperholomorphic setting

    Get PDF
we start the study of Schur analysis in the quaternionic setting using the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions. The novelty of our approach is that slice hyperholomorphic functions allows to write realizations in terms of a suitable resolvent, the so called S-resolvent operator and to extend several results that hold in the complex case to the quaternionic case. We discuss reproducing kernels, positive definite functions in this setting and we show how they can be obtained in our setting using the extension operator and the slice regular product. We define Schur multipliers, and find their co-isometric realization in terms of the associated de Branges-Rovnyak space

Dissecting the Role of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis:Cause or Solution

    Get PDF
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is one of the most aggressive forms of idiopathic interstitial pneumonias, characterized by chronic and progressive fibrosis subverting the lung’s architecture, pulmonary functional decline, progressive respiratory failure, and high mortality (median survival 3 years after diagnosis). Among the mechanisms associated with disease onset and progression, it has been hypothesized that IPF lungs might be affected either by a regenerative deficit of the alveolar epithelium or by a dysregulation of repair mechanisms in response to alveolar and vascular damage. This latter might be related to the progressive dysfunction and exhaustion of the resident stem cells together with a process of cellular and tissue senescence. The role of endogenous mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) resident in the lung in the homeostasis of these mechanisms is still a matter of debate. Although endogenous MSCs may play a critical role in lung repair, they are also involved in cellular senescence and tissue ageing processes with loss of lung regenerative potential. In addition, MSCs have immunomodulatory properties and can secrete anti-fibrotic factors. Thus, MSCs obtained from other sources administered systemically or directly into the lung have been investigated for lung epithelial repair and have been explored as a potential therapy for the treatment of lung diseases including IPF. Given these multiple potential roles of MSCs, this review aims both at elucidating the role of resident lung MSCs in IPF pathogenesis and the role of administered MSCs from other sources for potential IPF therapies
