    Do enzyme activities during decomposition follow predicted patterns? A test of the conceptual model of litter decay.

    Surprisingly, there remains a paucity of research examining specific interactions between the relationship between microbial community behavior and plant litter chemistry during decomposition. A more mechanistic understanding of the relationship between these drivers will ultimately help determine the trajectory of litter decomposition and the conditions in which soils serve as either a source or sink for atmospheric C. In order to examine these relationships, a laboratory incubation was established using _Acer saccharum_ litter and a sandy soil (< 1.5% organic matter). Extracellular enzyme activities ([BETA]-glucosidase, N-acetyl glucosaminidase, leucine-amino peptidase, acid phosphatase, phenol oxidase, and peroxidase) were monitored on a consistent basis along with instantaneous rates of carbon dioxide production, microbial biomass (carbon and nitrogen) and phospholipid fatty acid biomarkers (PLFA), and nitrogen and phosphorus availability. Microbial biomass and microbial respiration peaked within the first week of the experiment. This was likely due to the high availability of water soluble substrates early in decay that can be obtained without the production of extracellular enzymes. [BETA]-glucosidase (BG), N-acetyl glucosaminadase (NAG), and acid phosphatase activities increased quickly following the first week and peaked within the first month (at approximately 15% mass loss). Leucine amino peptidase was not detected during the incubation, which may be due to its strong positive correlation with soil pH, while other hydrolytic enzymes tend to track concentrations of soil organic matter. Phenol oxidase and peroxidase activities were not measurable until the second month of the experiment (> 25% mass loss), likely following the depletion of more labile substrates. A second increase in BG activity was observed between Days 83-111, which may be due to an increase in the availability of cellulose that was previously shielded by lignin, since oxidative enzyme activity was first detected on Day 68. We also observed some shifts in microbial PLFAs along with enzyme activities during decomposition. Prior to the increases in enzyme activity we observed a high proportion of PLFA 18:1[omega]7c, which is a bacterial biomarker. As enzyme activities increased, we observed a decrease in this biomarker and an increase in 18:2[omega]6,9c, a fungal biomarker that was correlated with BG and NAG activity. We did not observe any clear relationships between PLFAs and lignolytic enzyme activity, however. Overall, we observed a distinct functional shift in microbial substrate use that may be associated with either changes in composition of the microbial community or community shifts in enzyme production

    Detection of Molecular Hydrogen Orbiting a "Naked" T Tauri Star

    Astronomers have established that for a few million years newborn stars possess disks of orbiting gas and dust. Such disks, which are likely sites of planet formation, appear to disappear once these stars reach ages of 5-10 times 10^6 yr; yet, >= 10^7 yr is thought necessary for giant planet formation. If disks dissipate in less time than is needed for giant planet formation, such planets may be rare and those known around nearby stars would be anomalies. Herein, we report the discovery of H_2 gas orbiting a weak-lined T Tauri star heretofore presumed nearly devoid of circumstellar material. We estimate that a significant amount of H_2 persists in the gas phase, but only a tiny fraction of this mass emits in the near-infrared. We propose that this star possesses an evolved disk that has escaped detection thus far because much of the dust has coagulated into planetesimals. This discovery suggests that the theory that disks are largely absent around such stars should be reconsidered. The widespread presence of such disks would indicate that planetesimals can form quickly and giant planet formation can proceed to completion before the gas in circumstellar disks disperses.Comment: latex 12 pages, including 1 figur

    Eleven years of crop diversification alters decomposition dynamics of litter mixtures incubated with soil

    Agricultural crop rotations have been shown to increase soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and microbial biomass. The mechanisms behind these increases remain unclear, but may be linked to the diversity of crop residue inputs to soil organic matter (SOM). We used a residue mixture incubation to examine how variation in long-term diversity of plant communities in agroecosystems influences decomposition of residue mixtures, thus providing a comparison of the effects of plant diversification on decomposition in the long term (via crop rotation) and short term (via residue mixtures). Three crop residue mixtures, ranging in diversity from two to four species, were incubated for 360 d with soils from five crop rotations, ranging from monoculture corn (mC) to a complex five-crop rotation. In response, we measured fundamental soil pools and processes underlying C and N cycling. These included soil respiration, inorganic N, microbial biomass, and extracellular enzymes. We hypothesized that soils with more diverse cropping histories would show greater synergistic mixture effects than mC. For most variables (except extracellular enzymes), crop rotation history, or the long-term history of plant diversity in the field, had a stronger effect on soil processes than mixture composition. In contrast to our hypothesis, the mC soil had nearly three and seven times greater synergistic mixture effects for respiration and microbial biomass N, respectively, compared with soils from crop rotations. This was due to the low response of the mC soils to poor quality residues (corn and wheat), likely resulting from a lack of available C and nutrients to cometabolize these residues. These results indicate that diversifying crop rotations in agricultural systems alter the decomposition dynamics of new residue inputs, which may be linked to the benefits of increasing crop rotation diversity on soil nutrient cycling, SOM dynamics, and yields

    Orbital motion of the young brown dwarf companion TWA 5 B

    With more adaptive optics images available, we aim at detecting orbital motion for the first time in the system TWA 5 A+B. We measured separation and position angle between TWA 5 A and B in each high-resolution image available and followed their change in time, because B should orbit around A. The astrometric measurement precision is about one milli arc sec. With ten year difference in epoch, we can clearly detect orbital motion of B around A, a decrease in separation by ~ 0.0054 arc sec per year and a decrease in position angle by ~ 0.26 degrees per year. TWA 5 B is a brown dwarf with ~ 25 Jupiter masses (Neuh\"auser et al. 2000), but having large error bars (4 to 145 Jupiter masses, Neuh\"auser et al. 2009). Given its large projected separation from the primary star, ~ 86 AU, and its young age ~ 10 Myrs), it has probably formed star-like, and would then be a brown dwarf companion. Given the relatively large changes in separation and position angle between TWA 5 A and B, we can conclude that they orbit around each other on an eccentric orbit. Some evidence is found for a curvature in the orbital motion of B around A - most consistent with an elliptic (e=0.45) orbit. Residuals around the best-fit ellipse are detected and show a small-amplitude (~ 18 mas) periodic sinusoid with ~ 5.7 yr period, i.e., fully consistent with the orbit of the inner close pair TWA 5 Aa+b. Measuring these residuals caused by the photocenter wobble - even in unresolved images - can yield the total mass of the inner pair, so can test theoretical pre-main sequence models.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A; corrected typo in amplitude below Fig.

    Implicit beliefs about the nature of human abilities have significant motivational, behavioral, and affective consequences. The purpose of this article was to review the application of implicit beliefs to the youth sport context and to provide theoretically derived and evidence-based instructional strategies to promote adaptive implicit beliefs about human abilities within this context. A narrative overview of theory and a review of research pertaining to implicit beliefs in education, sport, and physical activity are undertaken. Theoretically derived and evidence-based instructional strategies are outlined, and specific coaching behaviors are suggested. Six instructional strategies to promote adaptive implicit beliefs in these contexts are suggested: focusing on effort and persistence, facilitating challenge, promoting the value of failure, defining success as effort, the promotion of learning, and providing high expectations. It is concluded that instructional strategies may be used to facilitate positive motivational, behavioral, and affective outcomes for young people within a sport context

    Simulations of the Population of Centaurs I: The Bulk Statistics

    Large-scale simulations of the Centaur population are carried out. The evolution of 23328 particles based on the orbits of 32 well-known Centaurs is followed for up to 3 Myr in the forward and backward direction under the influence of the 4 massive planets. The objects exhibit a rich variety of dynamical behaviour with half-lives ranging from 540 kyr (1996 AR20) to 32 Myr (2000 FZ53). The mean half-life of the entire sample of Centaurs is 2.7 Myr. The data are analyzed using a classification scheme based on the controlling planets at perihelion and aphelion, previously given in Horner et al (2003). Transfer probabilities are computed and show the main dynamical pathways of the Centaur population. The total number of Centaurs with diameters larger than 1 km is estimated as roughly 44300, assuming an inward flux of one new short-period comet every 200 yrs. The flux into the Centaur region from the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt is estimated to be 1 new object every 125 yrs.     Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease: decreased striatal dopamine transporter levels

    Objective Impulse control disorders are commonly associated with dopaminergic therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD). PD patients with impulse control disorders demonstrate enhanced dopamine release to conditioned cues and a gambling task on [11C]raclopride positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and enhanced ventral striatal activity to reward on functional MRI. We compared PD patients with impulse control disorders and age-matched and gender-matched controls without impulse control disorders using [123I]FP-CIT (2β-carbomethoxy-3β-(4-iodophenyl)tropane) single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), to assess striatal dopamine transporter (DAT) density. Methods The [123I]FP-CIT binding data in the striatum were compared between 15 PD patients with and 15 without impulse control disorders using independent t tests. Results Those with impulse control disorders showed significantly lower DAT binding in the right striatum with a trend in the left (right: F(1,24)=5.93, p=0.02; left: F(1,24)=3.75, p=0.07) compared to controls. Conclusions Our findings suggest that greater dopaminergic striatal activity in PD patients with impulse control disorders may be partly related to decreased uptake and clearance of dopamine from the synaptic cleft. Whether these findings are related to state or trait effects is not known. These findings dovetail with reports of lower DAT levels secondary to the effects of methamphetamine and alcohol. Although any regulation of DAT by antiparkinsonian medication appears to be modest, PD patients with impulse control disorders may be differentially sensitive to regulatory mechanisms of DAT expression by dopaminergic medications

    Tracking the reflexivity of the (dis)engaged citizen: some methodological reflections

    The relationship between governments and citizens in many contemporary democracies is haunted by uncertainty and sociologists face the task of listening effectively to citizens’ own reflections on this uncertain relationship. This article reflects on the qualitative methodology of a recently completed UK project which used a combination of diary and multiple interviews/ focus groups to track over a fieldwork period of up to a year citizens’ reflections on their relationship to a public world and the contribution to this of their media consumption. In particular, the article considers how the project’s multiple methods enabled multiple angles on the inevitable artificiality and performative dimension of the diary process, resulting in rich data on people’s complex reflections on the uncertain position of the contemporary citizen

    Celebrity culture and public connection: bridge or chasm?

    Media and cultural research has an important contribution to make to recent debates about declines in democratic engagement: is for example celebrity culture a route into democratic engagement for those otherwise disengaged? This article contributes to this debate by reviewing qualitative and quantitative findings from a UK project on 'public connection'. Using self-produced diaries (with in-depth multiple interviews) as well as a nationwide survey, the authors argue that while celebrity culture is an important point of social connection sustained by media use, it is not linked in citizens' own accounts to issues of public concern. Survey data suggest that those who particularly follow celebrity culture are the least engaged in politics and least likely to use their social networks to involve themselves in action or discussion about public-type issues. This does not mean 'celebrity culture' is 'bad', but it challenges suggestions of how popular culture might contribute to effective democracy
