Venus Pressure Chamber: A Small Testing Facility Available to the Community

    Get PDF
Venus is an inhospitable planet where the surface mean. temperature is approximately 740K and the global mean pressure is approximately 95 bars. The atmosphere is comprised mostly of CO2 (approximately 96.5%) and N2 (approximately3.5%) with trace amounts of CO and other reactive gases. Although Venus is very similar in size and mass with the Earth and is Earth's nearest planetary neighbor, it has not received many visitors from Earth, especially those that can land on the surface. The challenge most often cited for this scarcity of surface probes is the workability/survivability of instruments and equipment in Venus' harsh environment. In order to overcome this obstacle, a small pressure chamber has been acquired for use by the scientific community. It is housed at Goddard Space. Flight Center in Maryland and is available to the community for testing of small flight components, instruments and short-term experiments that require high temperatures and pressures

High altitude makes for high energy

On January 19, 2018 about 80 people sat in an unassuming conference room on the campus of the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, chatting and signing away cheerfully with their seat neighbors in anticipation of the keynote address by Susanne Even from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. The lively crowd of students and faculty members from across the country was clearly already in a chatty mood before the official introduction by Erin Noelliste, the lead organizer of the 5th Scenario Symposium on Performative Pedagogy, kicked off an engaging and interactive evening and day ahead. The idea behind this particular symposium was to focus on the use of drama to enhance learning in education and foreign languages, as the program stated. It was the second of its kind held in the US and thus aimed at broadening readership and scope of the Scenario Journal, with the goal of inspiring creativity and improvisation in foreign language classrooms. The keynote speaker Susanne Even took the podium and I dare say she could not have hoped for a more involved group of lifelong learners. Her keynote talk, made accessible to all participants by sign language interpreters, was the first presentation in the 2018 ..

Transporting and Storing High-Level Nuclear Waste in the U.S.—Insights from a Mathematical Model

    Get PDF
The nuclear industry in the United States of America has accumulated about 70,000 metric tons of high-level nuclear waste over the past decades; at present, this waste is temporarily stored close to the nuclear power plants. The industry and the Department of Energy are now facing two related challenges: (i) will a permanent geological repository, e.g., Yucca Mountain, become available in the future, and if yes, when?; (ii) should the high-level waste be transported to interim storage facilities in the meantime, which may be safer and more cost economic? This paper presents a mathematical transportation model that evaluates the economic challenges and costs associated with different scenarios regarding the opening of a long-term geological repository. The model results suggest that any further delay in opening a long-term storage increases cost and consolidated interim storage facilities should be built now. We show that Yucca Mountain’s capacity is insufficient and additional storage is necessary. A sensitivity analysis for the reprocessing of high-level waste finds this uneconomic in all cases. This paper thus emphasizes the urgency of dealing with the high-level nuclear waste and informs the debate between the nuclear industry and policymakers on the basis of objective data and quantitative analysis.DFG, 414044773, Open Access Publizieren 2019 - 2020 / Technische Universität BerlinBMBF, 01LN1704A, Nachwuchsgruppe Globaler Wandel: CoalExit - Die Ökonomie des Kohleausstiegs - Identifikation von Bausteinen für Rahmenpläne zukünftiger regionaler Strukturwande

Covid-19 im Strafvollzug : Bewältigung der Pandemie im Schweizer Freiheitsentzug

    Get PDF

Design of a 3-Stage ADR for the Soft X-Ray Spectrometer Instrument on the Astro-H Mission

    Get PDF
The Japanese Astro-H mission will include the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) instrument, whose 36-pixel detector array of ultra-sensitive x-ray microcalorimeters requires cooling to 50 mK. This will be accomplished using a 3-stage adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (ADR). The design is dictated by the need to operate with full redundancy with both a superfluid helium dewar at 1.3 K or below, and with a 4.5 K Joule-Thomson (JT) cooler. The ADR is configured as a 2-stage unit that is located in a well in the helium tank, and a third stage that is mounted to the top of the helium tank. The third stage is directly connected through two heat switches to the JT cooler and the helium tank, and manages heat flow between the two. When liquid helium is present, the 2-stage ADR operates in a single-shot manner using the superfluid helium as a heat sink. The third stage may be used independently to reduce the time-average heat load on the liquid to extend its lifetime. When the liquid is depleted, the 2nd and 3rd stages operate as a continuous ADR to maintain the helium tank at as low a temperature as possible - expected to be 1.2 K - and the 1st stage cools from that temperature as a single-stage, single-shot ADR. The ADR s design and operating modes are discussed, along with test results of the prototype 3-stage ADR
