High-Energy theory for close Randall Sundrum branes
We obtain an effective theory for the radion dynamics of the two-brane
Randall Sundrum model, correct to all orders in brane velocity in the limit of
close separation, which is of interest for studying brane collisions and early
Universe cosmology. Obtained via a recursive solution of the Bulk equation of
motions, the resulting theory represents a simple extension of the
corresponding low-energy effective theory to the high energy regime. The
four-dimensional low-energy theory is indeed not valid when corrections at
second order in velocity are considered. This extension has the remarkable
property of including only second derivatives and powers of first order
derivatives. This important feature makes the theory particularly easy to
solve. We then extend the theory by introducing a potential and detuning the

On the geodetic stability of the Goddard Optical Research Facility
Seismic observations of earthquakes and blasts, geologic analysis of Landsat images, and a search of the historical record was examined. However, no evidence for tectonic motion was found. Some faulting is present in the area but no evidence of seismic activity was found. No elastic resonances in the range from 0.3 to 15 Hz were found. It is concluded that, except for ground water induced changes, the facility is stable at least to the 0.5 cm level

Compartmental Bone Morphometry in the Mouse Femur: Reproducibility and Resolution Dependence of Microtomographic Measurements
Microcomputed tomography (μCT) is widely used for nondestructive bone phenotyping in small animals, especially in the mouse. Here, we investigated the reproducibility and resolution dependence of μCT analysis of microstructural parameters in three different compartments in the mouse femur. Reproducibility was assessed with respect to precision error (PE%CV) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). We examined 14 left femurs isolated postmortem from two strains of mice (seven per group). Measurements and analyses were repeated five times on different days. In a second step, analysis was repeated again five times for a single measurement. Resolution dependence was assessed by high-resolution measurements (10μm) in one strain and subsequent image degrading. Reproducibility was better in full bone compartment and in cortical bone compartment in the diaphysis (PE%CV = 0.06-2.16%) than in trabecular compartment in the distal metaphysis (PE%CV = 0.59-5.24%). Nevertheless, ICC (0.92-1.00) showed a very high reliability of the assessed parameters in all regions, indicating very small variances within repeated measurements compared to the population variances. Morphometric indices computed from lower- and higher-resolution images displayed in general only weak dependence and were highly correlated with each other (R2 = 0.91-0.99). The results show that parameters in the full and cortical compartments were very reproducible, whereas precision in the trabecular compartment was somewhat lower. Nevertheless, all compartmental analysis methods were very robust, as shown by the high ICC values, demonstrating high suitability for application in inbred strains, where highest precision is needed due to small population variance
The Stellar Parameters and Evolutionary State of the Primary in the d'-Symbiotic System StH\alpha190
We report on a high-resolution, spectroscopic stellar parameter and abundance
analysis of a d' symbiotic star: the yellow component of StH\alpha190. This
star has recently been discovered, and confirmed here, to be a rapidly rotating
(vsini=100 km/s) subgiant, or giant, that exhibits radial-velocity variations
of probably at least 40 km/s, indicating the presence of a companion (a white
dwarf star). It is found that the cool stellar component has Teff=5300K and log
g=3.0. The iron and calcium abundances are close to solar, however, barium is
overabundant, relative to Fe and Ca, by about +0.5 dex. The barium enhancement
reflects mass-transfer of s-process enriched material when the current white
dwarf was an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. The past and future evolution
of this binary system depends critically on its current orbital period, which
is not yet known. Concerted and frequent radial-velocity measurements are
needed to provide crucial physical constraints to this d' symbiotic system.Comment: 9 pages, 1 table, 3 figures. In press to Astrophysical Journal
