Phonon Raman scattering of perovskite LaNiO3 thin films
We report an investigation of perovskite-type LaNiO3 thin films by Raman
scattering in both various scattering configurations and as a function of
temperature. The room-temperature Raman spectra and the associated phonon mode
assignment provide reference data for phonon calculations and for the use of
Raman scattering for structural investigations of LaNiO3, namely the effect of
strain in thin films or heterostructures. The temperature-dependent Raman
spectra from 80 to 900 K are characterized by the softening of the rotational
A1g mode, which suggest a decreasing rhombohedral distortion towards the ideal
cubic structure with increasing temperature
High-Speed Communications Over Polymer Optical Fibers for In-Building Cabling and Home Networking
This paper focuses on high-speed cabling using polymer optical fibers (POF) in home networking. In particular, we report about the results obtained in the POF-ALL European Project, which is relevant to the Sixth Framework Program, and after two years of the European Project POF-PLUS, which is relevant to the Seventh Framework Program, focusing on their research activities about the use of poly-metyl-metha-acrilate step-index optical fibers for home applications. In particular, for that which concerns POF-ALL, we will describe eight-level pulse amplitude modulation (8-PAM) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) approaches for 100-Mb/s transmission over a target distance of 300 m, while for that which concerns POF-PLUS, we will describe a fully digital and a mixed analog-digital solution, both based on intensity modulation direct detection, for transmitting 1 Gb/s over a target distance of 50 m. The ultimate experimental results from the POF-ALL project will be given, while for POF-PLUS, which is still ongoing, we will only show our most recent preliminary results
Rotating sample magnetometer for cryogenic temperatures and high magnetic fields
We report on the design and implementation of a rotating sample magnetometer
(RSM) operating in the variable temperature insert of a cryostat equipped with
a high-field magnet. The limited space and the cryogenic temperatures impose
the most critical design parameters: the small bore size of the magnet requires
a very compact pick-up coil system and the low temperatures demand a very
careful design of the bearings. Despite these difficulties the RSM achieves
excellent resolution at high magnetic field sweep rates, exceeding that of a
typical vibrating sample magnetometer by about a factor of ten. In addition the
gas-flow cryostat and the high-field superconducting magnet provide a
temperature and magnetic field range unprecedented for this type of
magnetometer.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Fundamental noise limitations to supercontinuum generation in microstructure fiber
Broadband noise on supercontinuum spectra generated in microstructure fiber
is shown to lead to amplitude fluctuations as large as 50 % for certain input
laser pulse parameters. We study this noise using both experimental
measurements and numerical simulations with a generalized stochastic nonlinear
Schroedinger equation, finding good quantitative agreement over a range of
input pulse energies and chirp values. This noise is shown to arise from
nonlinear amplification of two quantum noise inputs: the input pulse shot noise
and the spontaneous Raman scattering down the fiber.Comment: 16 pages with 6 figure
A constitutive material model for nonlinear finite element structural analysis using an iterative matrix approach
A unified numerical method for the integration of stiff time dependent constitutive equations is presented. The solution process is directly applied to a constitutive model proposed by Bodner. The theory confronts time dependent inelastic behavior coupled with both isotropic hardening and directional hardening behaviors. Predicted stress-strain responses from this model are compared to experimental data from cyclic tests on uniaxial specimens. An algorithm is developed for the efficient integration of the Bodner flow equation. A comparison is made with the Euler integration method. An analysis of computational time is presented for the three algorithms
Density Matrix Perturbation Theory
An expansion method for perturbation of the zero temperature grand canonical
density matrix is introduced. The method achieves quadratically convergent
recursions that yield the response of the zero temperature density matrix upon
variation of the Hamiltonian. The technique allows treatment of embedded
quantum subsystems with a computational cost scaling linearly with the size of
the perturbed region, O(N_pert.), and as O(1) with the total system size. It
also allows direct computation of the density matrix response functions to any
order with linear scaling effort. Energy expressions to 4th order based on only
first and second order density matrix response are given.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Quark core impact on hybrid star cooling
In this paper we investigate the thermal evolution of hybrid stars, objects
composed of a quark matter core, enveloped by ordinary hadronic matter. Our
purpose is to investigate how important are the microscopic properties of the
quark core to the thermal evolution of the star. In order to do that we use a
simple MIT bag model for the quark core, and a relativistic mean field model
for the hadronic envelope. By choosing different values for the microscopic
parameters (bag constant, strange quark mass, strong coupling constant) we
obtain hybrid stars with different quark core properties. We also consider the
possibility of color superconductivity in the quark core. With this simple
approach, we have found a set of microscopic parameters that lead to a good
agreement with observed cooling neutron stars. Our results can be used to
obtain clues regarding the properties of the quark core in hybrid stars, and
can be used to refine more sophisticated models for the equation of state of
quark matter.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in Physical Review
