Performance characteristics of wind profiling radars
Doppler radars used to measure winds in the troposphere and lower stratosphere for weather analysis and forecasting are lower-sensitivity versions of mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere radars widely used for research. The term wind profiler is used to denote these radars because measurements of vertical profiles of horizontal and vertical wind are their primary function. It is clear that wind profilers will be in widespread use within five years: procurement of a network of 30 wind profilers is underway. The Wave Propagation Laboratory (WPL) has operated a small research network of radar wind profilers in Colorado for about two and one-half years. The transmitted power and antenna aperture for these radars is given. Data archiving procedures have been in place for about one year, and this data base is used to evaluate the performance of the radars. One of the prime concerns of potential wind profilers users is how often and how long wind measurements are lacking at a given height. Since these outages constitute an important part of the performance of the wind profilers, they are calculated at three radar frequencies, 50-, 405-, and 915-MHz, (wavelengths of 6-, 0.74-, and 0.33-m) at monthly intervals to determine both the number of outages at each frequency and annual variations in outages
Evidence for crossed Andreev reflection in superconductor-ferromagnet hybrid structures
We have measured the non-local resistance of aluminum-iron spin-valve
structures fabricated by e-beam lithography and shadow evaporation. The sample
geometry consists of an aluminum bar with two or more ferromagnetic wires
forming point contacts to the aluminum at varying distances from each other. In
the normal state of aluminum, we observe a spin-valve signal which allows us to
control the relative orientation of the magnetizations of the ferromagnetic
contacts. In the superconducting state, at low temperatures and excitation
voltages well below the gap, we observe a spin-dependent non-local resistance
which decays on a smaller length scale than the normal-state spin-valve signal.
The sign, magnitude and decay length of this signal is consistent with
predictions made for crossed Andreev reflection (CAR).Comment: RevTeX, 4 page
Non-sequential triple ionization in strong fields
We consider the final stage of triple ionization of atoms in a strong
linearly polarized laser field. We propose that for intensities below the
saturation value for triple ionization the process is dominated by the
simultaneous escape of three electrons from a highly excited intermediate
complex. We identify within a classical model two pathways to triple
ionization, one with a triangular configuration of electrons and one with a
more linear one. Both are saddles in phase space. A stability analysis
indicates that the triangular configuration has the larger cross sections and
should be the dominant one. Trajectory simulations within the dominant symmetry
subspace reproduce the experimentally observed distribution of ion momenta

High-Speed Communications Over Polymer Optical Fibers for In-Building Cabling and Home Networking
This paper focuses on high-speed cabling using polymer optical fibers (POF) in home networking. In particular, we report about the results obtained in the POF-ALL European Project, which is relevant to the Sixth Framework Program, and after two years of the European Project POF-PLUS, which is relevant to the Seventh Framework Program, focusing on their research activities about the use of poly-metyl-metha-acrilate step-index optical fibers for home applications. In particular, for that which concerns POF-ALL, we will describe eight-level pulse amplitude modulation (8-PAM) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) approaches for 100-Mb/s transmission over a target distance of 300 m, while for that which concerns POF-PLUS, we will describe a fully digital and a mixed analog-digital solution, both based on intensity modulation direct detection, for transmitting 1 Gb/s over a target distance of 50 m. The ultimate experimental results from the POF-ALL project will be given, while for POF-PLUS, which is still ongoing, we will only show our most recent preliminary results

A 45-year-old Female with an Atypical Presentation of Pharyngitis
Introduction: Emergency physicians are trained to treat a variety of ailments in the emergency department (ED), some of which are emergent, while others are not. A common complaint seen in the ED is a sore throat. While most sore throats are easily diagnosed and treated, less common causes are often not considered in the differential diagnoses. Therefore, the purpose of this case study was to present an atypical case of sore throat and discuss differential diagnoses.Case Presentation: The patient was a 45-year-old female who presented to the ED with a three-day history of sore throat that was exacerbated by eating and drinking. The patient was not on any prescription medications, but tried over-the-counter medications for the sore throat without any improvement in symptoms. Review of systems was positive for sore throat, fevers, and chills. Physical examination of her oropharynx revealed mildly dry mucous membranes with confluent plaques and white patchy ulcerative appearance involving the tongue, tonsils, hard palate, and soft palate. Rapid streptococcal antigen, mononucleosis spot test, and KOH test were performed and found to be negative.Discussion: After initial testing was negative, a follow-up complete blood count with differential and complete metabolic profile were ordered. The patient was found to have decreased lymphocytes and platelets. Based upon those results, a diagnosis was made in the ED, the patient was started on medication, and further laboratory workup was ordered to confirm the diagnosis. ED providers should consider non-infectious as well as infectious causes for a sore throat, as this might lead to a diagnosis of an underlying condition
Non-monotonic thermal Casimir force from geometry-temperature interplay
The geometry dependence of Casimir forces is significantly more pronounced in
the presence of thermal fluctuations due to a generic geometry-temperature
interplay. We show that the thermal force for standard sphere-plate or
cylinder-plate geometries develops a non-monotonic behavior already in the
simple case of a fluctuating Dirichlet scalar. In particular, the attractive
thermal force can increase for increasing distances below a critical
temperature. This anomalous behavior is triggered by a reweighting of relevant
fluctuations on the scale of the thermal wavelength. The essence of the
phenomenon becomes transparent within the worldline picture of the Casimir

Pathways to double ionization of atoms in strong fields
We discuss the final stages of double ionization of atoms in a strong
linearly polarized laser field within a classical model. We propose that all
trajectories leading to non-sequential double ionization pass close to a saddle
in phase space which we identify and characterize. The saddle lies in a two
degree of freedom subspace of symmetrically escaping electrons. The
distribution of longitudinal momenta of ions as calculated within the subspace
shows the double hump structure observed in experiments. Including a symmetric
bending mode of the electrons allows us to reproduce the transverse ion
momenta. We discuss also a path to sequential ionization and show that it does
