Power Corrections to Fragmentation Functions in Non-Singlet Deep Inelastic Scattering
We investigate the power-suppressed corrections to the fragmentation
functions of the current jet in non-singlet deep inelastic lepton-hadron
scattering. The current jet is defined by selecting final-state particles in
the current hemisphere in the Breit frame of reference. Our method is based on
an analysis of one-loop Feynman graphs containing a massive gluon, which is
equivalent to the evaluation of leading infrared renormalon contributions. We
find that the leading corrections are proportional to , as in
annihilation, but their functional forms are different. We give quantitative
estimates based on the hypothesis of universal low-energy behaviour of the

The Potential of Brain Stimulation Techniques for Substance Use Disorder Treatment
Current treatments for substance use disorders (SUDs) are far from ideal, with no U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved pharmacotherapies to treat stimulant and other use disorders. New approaches are urgently needed to combat the increasing prevalence of SUDs and overdose deaths. It is widely accepted that addiction is a chronic disease of the brain involving changes in neural circuitry associated with cognitive and reward functioning. Brain stimulation techniques are novel methods that can modulate these circuits directly and thus hold considerable promise for treating SUDs
Fine and ultrafine particle number and size measurements from industrial combustion processes : primary emissions field data
This study is to our knowledge the first to present the results of on-line measurements of residual nanoparticle numbers downstream of the flue gas treatment systems of a wide variety of medium- and large-scale industrial installations. Where available, a semi-quantitative elemental composition of the sampled particles is carried out using a Scanning Electron Microscope coupled with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS). The semi-quantitative elemental composition as a function of the particle size is presented. EU's Best Available Technology documents (BAT) show removal efficiencies of Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) and bag filter dedusting systems exceeding 99% when expressed in terms of weight. Their efficiency decreases slightly for particles smaller than 1 mu m but when expressed in terms of weight, still exceeds 99% for bag filters and 96% for ESP. This study reveals that in terms of particle numbers, residual nanoparticles (NP) leaving the dedusting systems dominate by several orders of magnitude. In terms of weight, all installations respect their emission limit values and the contribution of NP to weight concentrations is negligible, despite their dominance in terms of numbers. Current World Health Organisation regulations are expressed in terms of PM2.5 wt concentrations and therefore do not reflect the presence or absence of a high number of NP. This study suggests that research is needed on possible additional guidelines related to NP given their possible toxicity and high potential to easily enter the blood stream when inhaled by humans
Field testing a novel high residence positioning system for monitoring the fineâscale movements of aquatic organisms
1. Acoustic telemetry is an important tool for studying the behaviour of aquatic organisms in the wild.
2. VEMCO high residence (HR) tags and receivers are a recent introduction in the field of acoustic telemetry and can be paired with existing algorithms (e.g. VEMCO positioning system [VPS]) to obtain highâresolution twoâdimensional positioning data.
3. Here, we present results of the first documented field test of a VPS composed of HR receivers (hereafter, HRâVPS). We performed a series of stationary and moving trials with HR tags (mean HR transmission period = 1.5 s) to evaluate the precision, accuracy and temporal capabilities of this positioning technology. In addition, we present a sample of data obtained for five European perch Perca fluviatilis implanted with HR tags (mean HR transmission period = 4 s) to illustrate how this technology can estimate the fineâscale behaviour of aquatic animals.
4. Accuracy and precision estimates (median [5thâ95th percentile]) of HRâVPS positions for all stationary trials were 5.6 m (4.2â10.8 m) and 0.1 m (0.02â0.07 m), respectively, and depended on the location of tags within the receiver array. In moving tests, tracks generated by HRâVPS closely mimicked those produced by a handheld GPS held over the tag, but these differed in location by an average of â9 m.
5. We found that estimates of animal speed and distance travelled for perch declined when positional data for acoustically tagged perch were thinned to mimic longer transmission periods. These data also revealed a tradeâoff between capturing real nonlinear animal movements and the inclusion of positioning error.
6. Our results suggested that HRâVPS can provide more representative estimates of movement metrics and offer an advancement for studying fineâscale movements of aquatic organisms, but highâprecision survey techniques may be needed to test these systems
Cosmic ray moderation of the thermal instability
We apply the Hermite-Bieler theorem in the analysis of the effect of cosmic rays on the thermal stability of an initially uniform, static background. The cosmic rays were treated in a fluid approximation and the diffusion coefficient was assumed to be constant in time and space. The inclusion of cosmic rays does not alter the criterion for the thermal stability of a medium subjected to isobaric perturbations. It does alter the criteria for the stability of a medium perturbed by small amplitude sound waves. In the limit of a high background cosmic ray pressure to thermal pressure ratio, the instability in response to high frequency sound waves is suppressed
Asymptotic Dynamics in Quantum Field Theory
A crucial element of scattering theory and the LSZ reduction formula is the
assumption that the coupling vanishes at large times. This is known not to hold
for the theories of the Standard Model and in general such asymptotic dynamics
is not well understood. We give a description of asymptotic dynamics in field
theories which incorporates the important features of weak convergence and
physical boundary conditions. Applications to theories with three and four
point interactions are presented and the results are shown to be completely
consistent with the results of perturbation theory.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figure
The Origin of Galactic Cosmic Rays
Motivated by recent measurements of the major components of the cosmic
radiation around 10 TeV/nucleon and above, we discuss the phenomenology of a
model in which there are two distinct kinds of cosmic ray accelerators in the
galaxy. Comparison of the spectra of hydrogen and helium up to 100 TeV per
nucleon suggests that these two elements do not have the same spectrum of
magnetic rigidity over this entire region and that these two dominant elements
