Applications of polymer optical fibre grating sensors to condition monitoring of textiles
Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) in polymer optical fibres (POFs) have been used to measure the strain in a woven textile.
FBGs in both POFs and silica optical fibres were attached to a woven textile specimen, and their performance
characterised. It was demonstrated that the POF FBGs provide improved strain transfer coefficients and reduce local
structural reinforcement compared to silica FBGs and therefore make a more suitable proposition for textile monitoring
A study of the potential impacts of space utilization
Because the demand for comprehensive impact analysis of space technologies will increase with the use of space shuttles, the academic social sciences/humanities community was surveyed in order to determine their interests in space utilization, to develop a list of current and planned courses, and to generate a preliminary matrix of relevant social sciences. The academic scope/focus of a proposed social science space-related journal was identified including the disciplines which should be represented in the editorial board/reviewer system. The time and funding necessary to develop a self-sustaining journal were assessed. Cost income, general organizational structure, marking/distribution and funding sources were analyzed. Recommendations based on the survey are included
Remotely controlled mirror of variable geometry for small angle x-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation
A total-reflecting mirror of 120-cm length was designed and built to focus synchrotron radiation emanating from the electron-positron storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SPEAR). The reflecting surface is of
unpolished float glass. The bending and tilt mechanism allows very fine control of the curvature and selectability of the critical angle for wavelengths ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 Ă
. Elliptical curvature is used to minimize aberrations. The mirror is placed asymmetrically onto the ellipse so as to achieve a tenfold demagnification of the source. The bending mechanism reduces nonelastic
deformation (flow) and minimizes strains and stresses in the glass despite its length. Special design features assure stability of the focused image. The mirror
reduces the intensity of shorter wavelength harmonics by a factor of approximately 100
Analysis of Economic Depreciation for Multi-Family Property
This paper uses a hedonic pricing model and National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries data to estimate economic depreciation for multi-family real estate. The findings indicate that investment grade multi-family housing depreciates approximately 2.7% per year in real terms based on total property value. This implies a depreciation rate for just the building of about 3.25% per year. With 2% inflation, this suggests a nominal depreciation rate of about 5.25% per year. Converted into a straight-line depreciation rate that has the same present value, this suggests a depreciable life of 30.5 years - as compared to 27.5 years allowed under the current tax laws. Thus, these laws are slightly favorable to multi-family properties by providing a tax depreciation rate that exceeds economic depreciation, which is in part due to inflation that has been less than expected during the past decade.
No more time to stay âsingleâ in the detection of Anisakis pegreffii, A. simplex (s. s.) and hybridization events between them: a multi-marker nuclear genotyping approach
A multi-marker nuclear genotyping approach was performed on larval and adult specimens of Anisakis spp. (N = 689) collected from fish and cetaceans in allopatric and sympatric areas of the two species Anisakis pegreffii and Anisakis simplex
(s. s.), in order to: (1) identify specimens belonging to the parental taxa by using nuclear markers (allozymes loci) and sequence analysis of a new diagnostic nuclear DNA locus (i.e. partial sequence of the EF1 뱉1 nDNA region) and (2) recognize hybrid categories. According to the Bayesian clustering algorithms, based on those markers, most of the individuals
(N = 678) were identified as the parental species [i.e. A. pegreffii or A. simplex (s. s.)], whereas a smaller portion (N = 11)
were recognized as F1 hybrids. Discordant results were obtained when using the polymerase chain reactionârestriction
fragment length polymorphisms (PCRâRFLPs) of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal DNA (rDNA) on
the same specimens, which indicated the occurrence of a large number of âhybridsâ both in sympatry and allopatry.
These findings raise the question of possible misidentification of specimens belonging to the two parental Anisakis and
their hybrid categories derived from the application of that single marker (i.e. PCRâRFLPs analysis of the ITS of
rDNA). Finally, Bayesian clustering, using allozymes and EF1 뱉1 nDNA markers, has demonstrated that hybridization
between A. pegreffii and A. simplex (s. s.) is a contemporary phenomenon in sympatric areas, while no introgressive hybridization takes place between the two species
HI and OH absorption in the lensing galaxy of MG J0414+0534
We report the detection of \HI 21-cm absorption in the early-type
lensing galaxy towards MG J0414+0534 with the Green Bank Telescope. The
absorption, with total , is resolved into two strong components, probably due to the two
strongest lens components, which are separated by 0.4\arcsec. Unlike the other
three lenses which have been detected in \HI, J0414+0534 does not exhibit
strong OH absorption, giving a OH/\HI column density ratio of N_{\rm
OH}/N_{\rm HI}\lapp10^{-6} (for K, K and
). This underabundance of molecular gas may indicate
that the extreme optical--near-IR colour () along the line-of-sight
is not due to the lens. We therefore suggest that despite the strong upper
limits on molecular absorption at the quasar redshift, as traced by millimetre
