    The minimum free-stream wind speed for initiating motion of surface material on Mars

    Estimates of the minimum free-stream wind speed that is required for initiating the motion of surficial material on Mars have ranged from 30 to about 200 meters per second. Thus the best value for this quantity is not well established. Graphical comparison of much of the pertinent data taken in the laboratory and in the field on Earth provides a minimum value for the Bagnold coefficient of 0.08 and this in turn provides a minimum value for the threshold friction velocity of 1.3 meters per second for initiating motion of particulate matter on Mars at low elevations where the pressure is 7 millibars. The most appropriate value of the ratio of friction velocity to free-stream velocity for putative unstable condition appears to be 0.026. Thus the minimum free-stream wind speed for initiating motion is obtained as 50 meters per second. If the surface material on Mars, however, is less cohesive than that on earth, the minimum value may be smaller

    Cavity-enhanced optical detection of carbon nanotube Brownian motion

    Optical cavities with small mode volume are well-suited to detect the vibration of sub-wavelength sized objects. Here we employ a fiber-based, high-finesse optical microcavity to detect the Brownian motion of a freely suspended carbon nanotube at room temperature under vacuum. The optical detection resolves deflections of the oscillating tube down to 50pm/Hz^1/2. A full vibrational spectrum of the carbon nanotube is obtained and confirmed by characterization of the same device in a scanning electron microscope. Our work successfully extends the principles of high-sensitivity optomechanical detection to molecular scale nanomechanical systems.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure

    African American Adults’ Experiences with the Health Care System: In Their Own Words

    African Americans suffer a disproportionate burden of death and illness from a number of different chronic diseases. Inequalities in health care practices and poor patient and provider communication between African American patients and health care professionals contribute to these disparities. We describe findings from focus groups with 79 urban African Americans in which the participants discussed their interactions with the healthcare system as well as beliefs and opinions of the healthcare system and professionals. Analysis revealed five major themes: (1) historical and contextual foundations; (2) interpersonal experiences with physicians and other health care workers; (3) discrimination; (4) trust, opinions and attitudes, and (5) improving health care experiences. These findings indicate that perceptions of discrimination and racism were prevalent among African Americans in this study, and that the expectation of a negative interaction is a barrier to seeking care. Authors discuss prevention and public health implications of these findings and make recommendations for health care practitioners

    Risk and Protective Factors for Secondary Traumatic Stress and Burnout Among Home Visitors

    The overarching goal of this study was to understand the context of home visitor secondary traumatic stress and burnout, and how this might affect intention to quit among home visitors, particularly focusing on potential risk factors and supportive strategies identified by the home visitors. All home visitors providing services in the state in which the research was conducted (N = 27) completed a structured interview and a quantitative survey at two time points, 6 months apart. Results indicated that more than two-thirds of the home visitors experienced either medium or high levels of secondary traumatic stress and burnout over the course of the study. Approximately one quarter of home visitors indicated thinking of leaving their present positio. Qualitative data indicated that risk factors associated with burnout included those related to both direct and non-direct services. Risk factors associated with secondary traumatic stress included traumatic stress of families, inability to recognize one’s own experiences of secondary traumatic stress, and unhealthy work culture.     Photonic excess noise and wave localization

    This is a theory for the effect of localization on the super-Poissonian noise of radiation propagating through an absorbing disordered waveguide. Localization suppresses both the mean photon current I and the noise power P, but the Fano factor P/I is found to remain unaffected. For strong absorption the Fano factor has the universal value 1+3f/2 (with f the Bose-Einstein function), regardless of whether the waveguide is long or short compared to the localization length.Comment: 3 pages including 3 figure

    Dynamic Correlation in Wave Propagation in Random Media

    We report time-resolved measurements of the statistics of pulsed transmission through quasi-one-dimensional dielectric media with static disorder. The normalized intensity correlation function with displacement and polarization rotation for an incident pulse of linewidth σ\sigma at delay time t is a function only of the field correlation function, which is identical to that found for steady-state excitation, and of κσ(t)\kappa_{\sigma}(t), the residual degree of intensity correlation at points at which the field correlation function vanishes. The dynamic probability distribution of normalized intensity depends only upon κσ(t)\kappa_{\sigma}(t). Steady-state statistics are recovered in the limit σ\sigma->0, in which κσ=0\kappa_{\sigma=0} is the steady-state degree of correlation.Comment: 4 RevTex pages, 4 figure
