Geological survey of Maryland using EREP flight data
The author has identified the following significant results. Underflight photography has been used in the Baltimore County mined land inventory to determine areas of disturbed land where surface mining of sand and ground clay, or stone has taken place. Both active and abandoned pits and quarries were located. Aircraft data has been used to update cultural features of Calvert, Caroline, St. Mary's, Somerset, Talbot, and Wicomico Counties. Islands have been located and catalogued for comparison with older film and map data for erosion data. Strip mined areas are being mapped to obtain total area disturbed to aid in future mining and reclamation problems. Coastal estuarine and Atlantic Coast features are being studied to determine nearshore bedforms, sedimentary, and erosional patterns, and manmade influence on natural systems
Collaborative learning of water conservation practices: cultivation and expansion of a learning network around rainwater harvesting demonstration sites in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
Learning together in mediated voluntary networks can mobilise skills and innovations that help to facilitate learning and uptake of rainwater harvesting and conservation practices. It boosts extension capacity while at the same time growing farmer capabilities, tapping on the distributed cognition. These practices help to heal wicked problems of drought and global change challenges affecting marginalised farmers in South Africa. South Africa has water, nutrition and food security challenges, especially the Eastern Cape Province where there is a relatively high level of poverty. These challenges place heavy pressure on the agricultural sector as it is the main user of the allocated water in the country. In this paper, the learning of and agency for rainwater harvesting and conservation practices are explored as responses to these challenges. Despite existing cultural histories of such practices among the amaXhosa people, information on these practices is not readily available to small-scale rural farmers who thus struggle for the want of knowing. This research forms part of a Water Research Commission project, Amanzi for Food, whose intention is to mediate collaborative and co-engaged learning among networked farmers, extension workers, researchers and agricultural educators through course-mediated use of Water Research Commission rainwater harvesting and conservation materials.Key words: Agricultural extension, education, Rainwater harvesting, Collaborative learning, Network
Local Ferroelectricity in SrTiO_3 Thin Films
The temperature-dependent polarization of SrTiO_3 thin films is investigated
using confocal scanning optical microscopy. A homogeneous out-of-plane and
inhomogeneous in-plane ferroelectric phase are identified from images of the
linear electrooptic response. Both hysteretic and non-hysteretic behavior are
observed under a dc bias field. Unlike classical transitions in bulk
ferroelectrics, local ferroelectricity is observed at temperatures far above
the dielectric permittivity maximum. The results demonstrate the utility of
local probe experiments in understanding inhomogeneous ferroelectrics.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in PR
Electric circuit networks equivalent to chaotic quantum billiards
We formulate two types of electric RLC resonance network equivalent to
quantum billiards. In the network of inductors grounded by capacitors squared
resonant frequencies are eigenvalues of the quantum billiard. In the network of
capacitors grounded by inductors squared resonant frequencies are given by
inverse eigen values of the billiard. In both cases local voltages play role of
the wave function of the quantum billiard. However as different from quantum
billiards there is a heat power because of resistance of the inductors. In the
equivalent chaotic billiards we derive the distribution of the heat power which

Research and investigation of geology, mineral, and water resources of Maryland
The authors have identified the following significant results. Field work in Baltimore County revealed that the signature returns of serpentinitic and nonserpentinitic rocks correlates with the vegetation cover and land use pattern. In Maryland Piedmont, bedrock lithology and structure are enhanced only to the extent that land use is geologically dictated. Two prominent sets of linear features are detected on ERTS-1 imagery at N 45 deg E and N 20 deg E. Beaches of Chesapeake Bay are classified as broad and narrow beaches based on the width of the backshore zone. It is shown by comparing historical shorelines of Ocean City, from the inlet to the Maryland-Delaware line that reversal zones of erosion and accretion occur at different locations for different periods. High reflectance levels (high marsh-high topographic areas) for the lower Eastern Shore are found to be distributed as two distinct trending linear ridge systems. Observations of MSS band 5 dated 9 April 1974 exhibited an unique sedimentation pattern for Chesapeake Bay. Following a 1.5 inch rainfall, heavy concentration of suspended sediments is observed on the imagery, particularly in the area of the turbidity maximum
On the Adaptive Real-Time Detection of Fast-Propagating Network Worms
We present two light-weight worm detection algorithms thatoffer significant advantages over fixed-threshold methods.The first algorithm, RBS (rate-based sequential hypothesis testing)aims at the large class of worms that attempts to quickly propagate, thusexhibiting abnormal levels of the rate at which hosts initiateconnections to new destinations. The foundation of RBS derives fromthe theory of sequential hypothesis testing, the use of which fordetecting randomly scanning hosts was first introduced by our previouswork with the TRW (Threshold Random Walk) scan detection algorithm. The sequential hypothesistesting methodology enables engineering the detectors to meet falsepositives and false negatives targets, rather than triggering whenfixed thresholds are crossed. In this sense, the detectors that weintroduce are truly adaptive.We then introduce RBS+TRW, an algorithm that combines fan-out rate (RBS)and probability of failure (TRW) of connections to new destinations.RBS+TRW provides a unified framework that at one end acts as a pure RBSand at the other end as pure TRW, and extends RBS's power in detectingworms that scan randomly selected IP addresses
Patients' beliefs towards contingency management: target behaviours, incentives and the remote application of these interventions
Abstract: Introduction: Contingency management interventions are among the most efficacious psychosocial interventions in promoting abstinence from smoking, alcohol and substance use. The aim of this study was to assess the beliefs and objections towards contingency management among patients in UK‐based drug and alcohol services to help understand barriers to uptake and support the development and implementation of these interventions. Methods: The Service User Survey of Incentives was developed and implemented among patients (N = 181) at three UK‐based drug and alcohol treatment services. Descriptive analyses were conducted to ascertain positive and negative beliefs about contingency management, acceptability of different target behaviours, incentives and delivery mechanisms including delivering incentives remotely using technology devices such as mobile telephones. Results: Overall, 81% of participants were in favour of incentive programs, with more than 70% of respondents agreeing with the majority of positive belief statements. With the exception of two survey items, less than a third of participants agreed with negative belief statements. The proportion of participants indicating a neutral response was higher for negative statements (27%) indicating greater levels of ambiguity towards objections and concerns regarding contingency management. Discussion and Conclusions: Positive beliefs towards contingency management interventions were found, including high levels of acceptability towards a range of target behaviours, incentives and the use of technology devices to remotely monitor behaviour and deliver incentives. These findings have implications for the development and implementation of remote contingency management interventions within the UK drug treatment services
Nucleosynthesis in Type II Supernovae
Presupernova evolution and explosive nucleosynthesis in massive stars for
main-sequence masses from 13 to 70 are calculated. We
examine the dependence of the supernova yields on the stellar mass,
^{12}C(\alpha, \gamma) ^{16}O} rate, and explosion energy. The supernova
yields integrated over the initial mass function are compared with the solar
