The Real Combination Problem : Panpsychism, Micro-Subjects, and Emergence
Panpsychism harbors an unresolved tension, the seriousness of which has yet to be fully appreciated. I capture this tension as a dilemma, and offer panpsychists advice on how to resolve it. The dilemma, briefly, is as follows. Panpsychists are committed to the perspicuous explanation of macro-mentality in terms of micro-mentality. But panpsychists take the micro-material realm to feature not just mental properties, but also micro-subjects to whom these properties belong. Yet it is impossible to explain the constitution of a macro-subject (like one of us) in terms of the assembly of micro-subjects, for, I show, subjects cannot combine. Therefore the panpsychist explanatory project is derailed by the insistence that the world’s ultimate material constituents (ultimates) are subjects of experience. The panpsychist faces a choice of abandoning her explanatory project, or recanting the claim that the ultimates are subjects. This is the dilemma. I argue that the latter option is to be preferred. This needn’t constitute a wholesale abandonment of panpsychism, however, since panpsychists can maintain that the ultimates possess phenomenal qualities, despite not being subjects of those qualities. This proposal requires us to make sense of phenomenal qualities existing independently of experiencing subjects, a challenge I tackle in the penultimate section. The position eventually reached is a form of neutral monism, so another way to express the overall argument is to say that, keeping true to their philosophical motivations, panpsychists should really be neutral monists.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Automatic estimation of harmonic tension by distributed representation of chords
The buildup and release of a sense of tension is one of the most essential
aspects of the process of listening to music. A veridical computational model
of perceived musical tension would be an important ingredient for many music
informatics applications. The present paper presents a new approach to
modelling harmonic tension based on a distributed representation of chords. The
starting hypothesis is that harmonic tension as perceived by human listeners is
related, among other things, to the expectedness of harmonic units (chords) in
their local harmonic context. We train a word2vec-type neural network to learn
a vector space that captures contextual similarity and expectedness, and define
a quantitative measure of harmonic tension on top of this. To assess the
veridicality of the model, we compare its outputs on a number of well-defined
chord classes and cadential contexts to results from pertinent empirical
studies in music psychology. Statistical analysis shows that the model's
predictions conform very well with empirical evidence obtained from human
listeners.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. To appear in Proceedings of the 13th

A Review of Recent Positron Annihilation NDE Applications
This review will treat two recent applications of positron annihilation to metallurgical studies and will involve the measurement of the Doppler effect associated with the gamma rays emitted during positron annihilation. The applications will be: studies of the interactions of dislocations with pre-precipitates in aged Al-4 weight percent Cu single crystals and studies of the effect of hydrogen charging into polycrystalline nickel
Fitting Precision Electroweak Data with Exotic Heavy Quarks
The 1999 precision electroweak data from LEP and SLC persist in showing some
slight discrepancies from the assumed standard model, mostly regarding and
quarks. We show how their mixing with exotic heavy quarks could result in a
more consistent fit of all the data, including two unconventional
interpretations of the top quark.Comment: 7 pages, no figure, 2 typos corrected, 1 reference update
Postural awareness and its relation to pain: Validation of an innovative instrument measuring awareness of body posture in patients with chronic pain
© 2018 The Author(s). Background: Habitual postural patterns are associated with musculoskeletal pain, and improving a maladaptive posture requires postural awareness in order to lead to clinical improvements. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of an innovative postural awareness scale. Methods: A 12-item Postural Awareness Scale (PAS) was developed and administered to 512 chronic pain patients (50.3 ± 11.4 years, 91.6% female, 37.1% spinal/shoulder pain) to assess its factor structure and reliability. To determine convergent validity, measures of body awareness, body responsiveness, body image, and mindfulness were correlated with the PAS, as were clinical measures of pain intensity, disability, and mental health. Sensitivity to change was assessed in 202 outpatients participating in a 10-week multimodal mind-body program. Results: Factor analysis revealed two factors (Ease/Familiarity with Postural Awareness and Need for Attention Regulation with Postural Awareness) that explained 50.8% of the variance. Cronbach's alpha for the complete scale was 0.80; Spearman-Brown coefficient of split-half reliability was 0.67; and intra-class correlation was ICC2,1 = 0.75 (95% confidence interval = 0.71, 0.78). Significant positive correlations were found for body awareness (r = 0.23), body responsiveness (r = 0.41), body image (r = 0.22-0.32), and mindfulness (r = 0.38); negative correlations for pain intensity (r = - 0.14), disability (r = - 0.12), depression (r = - 0.23), and stress (r = - 0.29). Postural awareness scores increased with a mind-body program (p < 0.001); changes in the PAS were negatively correlated with changes in pain intensity (r = - 0.35) in patients with spinal/shoulder pain. Conclusion: Self-reported postural awareness is associated with clinical symptoms in chronic pain patients; improvements in postural awareness are longitudinally associated with reduced pain in patients with spinal/shoulder pain
Markov Chain-based Cost-Optimal Control Charts for Healthcare Data
Control charts have traditionally been used in industrial statistics, but are
constantly seeing new areas of application, especially in the age of Industry
4.0. This paper introduces a new method, which is suitable for applications in
the healthcare sector, especially for monitoring a health-characteristic of a
patient. We adapt a Markov chain-based approach and develop a method in which
not only the shift size (i.e. the degradation of the patient's health) can be
random, but the effect of the repair (i.e. treatment) and time between
samplings (i.e. visits) too. This means that we do not use many often-present
assumptions which are usually not applicable for medical treatments. The
average cost of the protocol, which is determined by the time between samplings
and the control limit, can be estimated using the stationary distribution of
the Markov chain.
Furthermore, we incorporate the standard deviation of the cost into the
optimisation procedure, which is often very important from a process control
viewpoint. The sensitivity of the optimal parameters and the resulting average
cost and cost standard deviation on different parameter values is investigated.
We demonstrate the usefulness of the approach for real-life data of patients
treated in Hungary: namely the monitoring of cholesterol level of patients with
cardiovascular event risk. The results showed that the optimal parameters from
our approach can be somewhat different from the original medical parameters
Areas of natural occurrence of melipona scutellaris Latreille, 1811(Hymenoptera: Apidae) in the state of Bahia, Brazil.
The bee Melipona scutellaris is considered the reared meliponine species with the largest distribution in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, with records from the state of Rio Grande do Norte down to the state of Bahia. Considering the importance of this species in the generation of income for family agriculture and in the preservation of areas with natural vegetation, this study aimed at providing knowledge on the distribution of natural colonies of M. scutellaris in the state of Bahia. Literature information, interviews with stinglessbee beekeepers, and expeditions were conducted to confirm the natural occurrence of the species. A total of 102 municipalities showed records for M. scutellaris, whose occurrence was observed in areas ranging from sea level up to 1,200-meter height. The occurrence of this species in the state of Bahia is considered to be restricted to municipalities on the coastal area and the Chapada Diamantina with its rainforests. Geographic coordinates, elevation, climate and vegetation data were obtained, which allowed a map to be prepared for the area of occurrence in order to support conservation and management policies for the species
Efficacy of an intensive outpatient rehabilitation program in alcoholism: Predictors of outcome 6 months after treatment
Treatment of alcohol-dependent patients was primarily focused on inpatient settings in the past decades. The efficacy of these treatment programs has been evaluated in several studies and proven to be sufficient. However, with regard to the increasing costs in public healthcare systems, questions about alternative treatment strategies have been raised. Meanwhile, there is growing evidence that outpatient treatment might be comparably effective as inpatient treatment, at least for subgroups of alcohol dependents. On that background, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a high-structured outpatient treatment program in 103 alcohol-dependent patients. 74 patients (72%) terminated the outpatient treatment regularly. At 6 months' follow-up, 95% patients were successfully located and personally re-interviewed. Analyses revealed that 65 patients (64%) were abstinent at the 6-month follow-up evaluation and 37 patients ( 36%) were judged to be non-abstinent. Pretreatment variables which were found to have a negative impact (non-abstinence) on the 6-month outcome after treatment were a higher severity of alcohol dependence measured by a longer duration of alcohol dependence, a higher number of prior treatments and a stronger alcohol craving (measured by the Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale). Further patients with a higher degree of psychopathology measured by the Beck Depression Inventory (depression) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (anxiety) relapsed more often. In summary, results of this study indicate a favorable outcome of socially stable alcohol-dependent patients and patients with a lower degree of depression, anxiety and craving in an intensive outpatient rehabilitation program
