    The chiral and flavour projection of Dirac-Kahler fermions in the geometric discretization

    It is shown that an exact chiral symmetry can be described for Dirac-Kahler fermions using the two complexes of the geometric discretization. This principle is extended to describe exact flavour projection and it is shown that this necessitates the introduction of a new operator and two new structures of complex. To describe simultaneous chiral and flavour projection, eight complexes are needed in all and it is shown that projection leaves a single flavour of chiral field on each.Comment: v2: 17 pages, Latex. 5 images eps.     Scoping a public health impact assessment of aquaculture with particular reference to tilapia in the UK

    Background. The paper explores shaping public health impact assessment tools for tilapia, a novel emergent aquaculture sector in the UK. This Research Council’s UK Rural Economy and Land Use project embraces technical, public health, and marketing perspectives scoping tools to assess possible impacts of the activity. Globally, aquaculture produced over 65 million tonnes of food in 2008 and will grow significantly requiring apposite global public health impact assessment tools.<p></p> Methods. Quantitative and qualitative methods incorporated data from a tridisciplinary literature. Holistic tools scoped tilapia farming impact assessments. Laboratory-based tilapia production generated data on impacts in UK and Thailand along with 11 UK focus groups involving 90 consumers, 30 interviews and site visits, 9 visits to UK tilapia growers and 2 in The Netherlands.<p></p> Results. The feasibility, challenges, strengths, and weaknesses of creating a tilapia Public Health Impact Assessment are analysed. Occupational and environmental health benefits and risks attached to tilapia production were identified.<p></p> Conclusions. Scoping public health impacts of tilapia production is possible at different levels and forms for producers, retailers, consumers, civil society and governmental bodies that may contribute to complex and interrelated public health assessments of aquaculture projects. Our assessment framework constitutes an innovatory perspective in the field

    An experimental investigation into the use of eye‐contact in social interactions in women in the acute and recovered stages of anorexia nervosa

    Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) is a low-intensity treatment adjunct for individuals with severe and complex anorexia nervosa (AN) with difficulties in globally oriented, flexible thinking. Previously trialled in adults, this study investigated whetherindividual and group CRT was a feasible, acceptable and beneficial treatment for 125 adolescent inpatients with severe and complex AN. Seventy patients (mean age=15.22, SD=1.44) received 10 sessions of individual CRT and 55 patients (mean age=14.89, SD=1.74) received 10 sessions of group CRT. In individual CRT, 1 patient (1.43%) dropped out and there were medium-sized improvements in bigger picture thinking and set-shifting, small to large-sized improvements in switching-related initiation and inhibition skills and large-sized improvements in motivation to recover. Group CRT had higher drop-out (9.09%;n=5) and produced small-sized improvements in global information processing and medium-sized improvements in self-reported cognitive flexibility and high acceptability ratings. Data suggest a randomised controlled trial for adolescents with AN is warranted

    The results of this study indicate that jarring at frequent intervals throughout the first day of incubation exerts a deleterious influence on the developing embryo. Only in one instance did an egg jarred from the fourth to the twelfth hour of incubation develop normally and hatch. Sixty per cent of the embryos thus jarred died sometime between the second and third day of incubation. The others ceased to develop between the third and eleventh day of incubation
