Indicators of hot fluid migration in sedimentary basins: evidence from the UK Atlantic Margin
Microthermometric, petrographic and isotopic methods have been used to detect evidence for hot fluid flow in Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments from the NW UK continental margin, West of Shetland. New data presented here show that temperatures are hotter by c. 40°C in Tertiary samples than in the underlying Jurassic and Cretaceous sediments in wells 204/28-1, 206/5-2, 208/27-1, especially in cements from samples as young as mid–upper Eocene in age. Paleocene samples can be discriminated from older (Jurassic and Cretaceous) and younger (Eocene) sandstones on the basis of silica cement morphology and cathodoluminescence zonation. Jurassic, Cretaceous and Eocene quartz cements show oscillatory zoning as a consequence of relatively slow burial cementation. In direct contrast, rapid precipitation of silica cements from the cooling of hot fluids has produced unzoned cements in all but one Paleocene sample. No evidence for unzoned quartz cements was noted in any pre-Paleocene or Eocene samples. The restriction of hot fluid inclusions and unzoned cements to the Paleocene and post-Paleocene is consistent with lateral focusing of hot fluids. Isotopic data from kaolinites indicate that these fluids are best represented by mixtures of Mesozoic or Tertiary meteoric waters and marine porewaters that have undergone isotopic alteration through interaction with volcanic material. Our results indicate that hot fluid flow occurred over a relatively long time-scale (i.e. several million years), which may have important consequences for the degradation of reservoired hydrocarbons in West of Shetland Paleocene plays
Inorganic Surface Passivation of PbS Nanocrystals resulting in Strong Photoluminescent Emission
Strong photoluminescent emission has been obtained from 3 nm PbS nanocrystals
in aqueous colloidal solution, following treatment with CdS precursors. The
observed emission can extend across the entire visible spectrum and usually
includes a peak near 1.95 eV. We show that much of the visible emission results
from absorption by higher-lying excited states above 3.0 eV with subsequent
relaxation to and emission from states lying above the observed band-edge of
the PbS nanocrystals. The fluorescent lifetimes for this emission are in the
nanosecond regime, characteristic of exciton recombination.Comment: Preprint, 23 pages, 6 figure
Exclusive diffractive processes at HERA within the dipole picture
We present a simultaneous analysis, within an impact parameter dependent
saturated dipole model, of exclusive diffractive vector meson (J/psi, phi and
rho) production, deeply virtual Compton scattering and the total gamma* p cross
section data measured at HERA. Various cross sections measured as a function of
the kinematic variables Q^2, W and t are well described, with little
sensitivity to the details of the vector meson wave functions. We determine the
properties of the gluon density in the proton in both longitudinal and
transverse dimensions, including the impact parameter dependent saturation
scale. The overall success of the description indicates universality of the

Risk assessment at an informal e-waste recycling site in Lagos state, Nigeria
E-waste is referred to obsolete, broken electronic devices such as mobile phones, televisions, computer monitors, laptops, printers, scanners, and associated wiring (Luther, 2010). E-waste is generated in large quantities (Tang et al., 2010); the composition of the waste creates a major problem. E-waste contains more than 1000 different substances, many of which are toxic metals and organic pollutants (Robinson, 2009). These include lead and cadmium in circuit boards; lead oxide and cadmium in monitor cathode ray tubes (CRTs); mercury in switches and flat screen monitors; cadmium in computer batteries; polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in older capacitors and transformers; and brominated flame retardants on printed circuit boards, plastic casings, cables and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cable insulation that release highly toxic dioxins and furans when burned to retrieve copper from the wires (BAN, 2002). Also, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are used as brominated flame retardants in electronic circuit boards (Wang et al., 2005). Activities carried out in the site of interest include dismantling of the different electronic waste, sorting out of various parts and burning of wires and other parts to get valuable metals.The complex composition of e-waste may pose a threat to the environment and human health if they are not disposed correctly
Heavy metals distribution and risk assessment in soil from an informal e-waste recycling site in Lagos State, Nigeria
Informal e-waste recycling can pose a risk to human health and the environment, which this study endeavours to evaluate. The distribution of a number of heavy metals in soil from an informal recycling site in the largest market for used and new electronics and electrical equipment in West Africa was investigated. The potential bioavailability of heavy metals, extent of contamination, potential risk due to the recycling activities and impact of external factors such as rainfall were also assessed. The concentrations of all the metals tested were higher in area where burning of the waste occurred than the control site, suggesting an impact of the recycling activities on the soil. The order of total metal concentrations was Cu > Pb > Zn > Mn > Ni > Sb > Cr > Cd for both the dry and wet seasons. The total concentration of Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni and Zn were all significantly higher (p Sb > Zn > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cr. Whern the risk was assessed using the Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI), Cu was found to contribute the most to the potential ecological risk and Cd gave rise to the greatest concern due to its high toxic-response factor within the study site. Similarly, the Risk Assessment Code (RAC) suggested Cd posed the most risk in this site. This research establishes a high level of contamination in the study site and underscores the importance of applying the appropriate chemical speciation in risk assessment

Levels of genetic polymorphism: marker loci versus quantitative traits
Species are the units used to measure ecological diversity and alleles are the units of genetic diversity. Genetic variation within and among species has been documented most extensively using allozyme electrophoresis. This reveals wide differences in genetic variability within, and genetic distances among, species, demonstrating that species are not equivalent units of diversity. The extent to which the pattern observed for allozymes can be used to infer patterns of genetic variation in quantitative traits depends on the forces generating and maintaining variability. Allozyme variation is probably not strictly neutral but, nevertheless, heterozygosity is expected to be influenced by population size and genetic distance will be affected by time since divergence. The same is true for quantitative traits influenced by many genes and under weak stabilizing selection. However, the limited data available suggest that allozyme variability is a poor predictor of genetic variation in quantitative traits within populations. It is a better predictor of general phenotypic divergence and of postzygotic isolation between populations or species, but is only weakly correlated with prezygotic isolation. Studies of grasshopper and planthopper mating signal variation and assortative mating illustrate how these characters evolve independently of general genetic and morphological variation. The role of such traits in prezygotic isolation, and hence speciation, means that they will contribute significantly to the diversity of levels of genetic variation within and among species
Cognitive dysfunction in patients with cerebral microbleeds on T2*-weighted gradient-echo MRI.
Gradient echo T2*-weighted MRI has high sensitivity in detecting cerebral microbleeds, which appear as small dot-like hypointense lesions. Microbleeds are strongly associated with intracerebral haemorrhage, hypertension, lacunar stroke and ischaemic small vessel disease, and have generated interest as a marker of bleeding-prone microangiopathy. Microbleeds have generally been considered to be clinically silent; however, since they are located in widespread cortical and basal ganglia regions and are histologically characterized by tissue damage, we hypothesized that they would cause cognitive dysfunction. We therefore studied patients with microbleeds (n = 25) and a non-microbleed control group (n = 30) matched for age, gender and intelligence quotient. To avoid the confounding effects of coexisting cerebrovascular disease, the groups were also matched for the extent of MRI-visible white matter changes of presumed ischaemic origin, location of cortical strokes, and for the proportion of patients with different stroke subtypes (including lacunar stroke). A battery of neuropsychological tests was used to assess current intellectual function, verbal and visual memory, naming and perceptual skills, speed and attention and executive function. Microbleeds were most common in the basal ganglia but were also found in frontal, parieto-occipital, temporal and infratentorial regions. There was a striking difference between the groups in the prevalence of executive dysfunction, which was present in 60% of microbleed patients compared with 30% of non-microbleed patients (P = 0.03). Logistic regression confirmed that microbleeds (but not white matter changes) were an independent predictor of executive impairment (adjusted odds ratio = 1.32, 95% confidence interval 1.01-1.70, P = 0.04). Patients with executive dysfunction had more microbleeds in the frontal region (mean count 1.54 versus 0.03; P = 0.002) and in the basal ganglia (mean 1.17 versus 0.32; P = 0.048). There was a modest correlation between the number of microbleeds and the number of cognitive domains impaired (r = 0.44, P = 0.03). This study provides novel evidence that microbleeds are associated with cognitive dysfunction, independent of the extent of white matter changes of presumed ischaemic origin, or the presence of ischaemic stroke. The striking effect of microbleeds on executive dysfunction is likely to result from associated tissue damage in the frontal lobes and basal ganglia. These findings have implications for the diagnosis of stroke patients with cognitive impairment, and for the appropriate use of antihypertensive and antiplatelet treatments in these patients
Access to primary care and the route of emergency admission to hospital: retrospective analysis of national hospital administrative data
BACKGROUND: The UK government is pursuing policies to improve primary care access, as many patients visit accident and emergency (A and E) departments after being unable to get suitable general practice appointments. Direct admission to hospital via a general practitioner (GP) averts A and E use, and may reduce total hospital costs. It could also enhance the continuity of information between GPs and hospital doctors, possibly improving healthcare outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether primary care access is associated with the route of emergency admission-via a GP versus via an A and E department. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of national administrative data from English hospitals for 2011-2012. Adults admitted in an emergency (unscheduled) for ≥1 night via a GP or an A and E department formed the study population. The measure of primary care access-the percentage of patients able to get a general practice appointment on their last attempt-was derived from a large, nationally representative patient survey. Multilevel logistic regression was used to estimate associations, adjusting for patient and admission characteristics. RESULTS: The analysis included 2 322 112 emergency admissions (81.9% via an A and E department). With a 5 unit increase in the percentage of patients able to get a general practice appointment on their last attempt, the adjusted odds of GP admission (vs A and E admission) was estimated to increase by 15% (OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.12 to 1.17). The probability of GP admission if ≥95% of appointment attempts were successful in each general practice was estimated to be 19.6%. This probability reduced to 13.6% when <80% of appointment attempts were successful. This equates to 139 673 fewer GP admissions (456 232 vs 316 559) assuming no change in the total number of admissions. Associations were consistent in direction across geographical regions of England. CONCLUSIONS: Among hospital inpatients admitted as an emergency, patients registered to more accessible general practices were more likely to have been admitted via a GP (vs an A and E department). This furthers evidence suggesting that access to general practice is related to use of emergency hospital services in England. The relative merits of the two admission routes remain unclear
