Network analyses of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) symptoms in children
Based on parent and teacher ratings of their children, this study used regularized partial correlation network analysis (EBIC glasso) to examine the structure of DSM-5 Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) symptoms. Parent and teachers (N = 934) from the general community in Malaysia completed questionnaires covering DSM-5 ODD symptoms. The most central ODD symptom for parent ratings was anger, followed by argue. For teacher ratings, it was anger, followed by defy. For both parent and teacher ratings, the networks revealed at least medium effect size connections for temper and argue, defy, and argue, blames others, and annoy, and spiteful and angry. Overall, the findings were highly comparable across parent and teacher ratings, and they showed a novel understanding of the structure of the ODD symptoms. The clinical implications of the findings for assessment and treatment of ODD are discussed
Streams, Structures, Spaces, Scenarios, Societies (5S): A Formal Model for Digital Libraries
Digital libraries (DLs) are complex information systems and therefore demand formal foundations lest development efforts diverge and interoperability suffers. In this paper, we propose the fundamental abstractions of Streams, Structures, Spaces, Scenarios, and Societies (5S), which allow us to define digital libraries rigorously and usefully. Streams are sequences of arbitrary items used to describe both static and dynamic (e.g., video) content. Structures can be viewed as labeled directed graphs, which impose organization. Spaces are sets with operations on those sets that obey certain constraints. Scenarios consist of sequences of events or actions that modify states of a computation in order to accomplish a functional requirement. Societies are sets of entities and activities and the relationships between and among them. Together these abstractions provide a formal foundation to define, relate, and unify concepts - among others, of digital objects, metadata, collections, and services - required to formalize and elucidate "digital libraries". The applicability, versatility and unifying power of the 5S model are demonstrated through its use in three distinct applications: building and interpretation of a DL taxonomy, informal and formal analysis of case studies of digital libraries (NDLTD and OAI), and utilization as a formal basis for a DL description language
Effect of serum and cumulus cell expansion on marker gene transcripts in bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes during maturation in vitro.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the distribution of transcripts encoding the FSH receptor (FSHr), LH receptor (LHr), connexin 43 (Cx43), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and prostaglandin E(2) receptors 2 and 3 (EP2 and EP3) within bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) and denuded oocytes and investigate the influence of gonadotropins, serum, and cumulus cell expansion on the abundance of transcripts encoding these genes.
DESIGN: Prospective controlled animal study.
SETTING: University research laboratory.
PATIENT(S): Animal models for human studies.
INTERVENTION(S): Cumulus-oocyte complexes were treated in culture with serum and gonadotropin-supplemented media to examine the effects to mRNA transcript levels.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Variation in mRNA transcript levels.
RESULT(S): Luteinizing hormone receptor, FSHr, and EP3 mRNAs were detected in intact COCs and not in cumulus cell-denuded oocytes, whereas Cx43, COX-2, and EP2 mRNAs were found in both COCs and oocytes. The relative abundance of marker gene mRNAs did not vary in media containing no additives or FSH alone, independent of whether the media induced cumulus cell expansion. However, the presence of serum in maturation media significantly decreased expression of all mRNAs except LHr.
CONCLUSION(S): The relative abundance of COC mRNAs is altered by serum in the maturation medium, which may signify long-term consequences for embryonic development

Direct procurement of donor heart with normothermic regional perfusion of abdominal organs.
PURPOSE: To evaluate if direct procurement of heart is possible in combination with normothermic regional perfusion of abdominal organs in donors after circulatory death. DESCRIPTION: A donation after circulatory death pathway was utilized for a 41-year-old female following an irreversible brain injury. After meeting criteria for the organ donation, heart was retrieved and re-animated on ex-situ perfusion system while abdominal organs were perfused using normothermic regional perfusion. EVALUATION: All the donated organs and their recipients had excellent short-term outcome. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated a successful combination of direct procurement of the heart and normothermic regional perfusion of the abdominal organs

Beliefs around luck : confirming the empirical conceptualization of beliefs around luck and the development of the Darke and Freedman beliefs around luck scale
The current study developed a multi-dimensional measure of beliefs around luck. Two studies introduced the Darke and Freedman beliefs around luck scale where the scale showed a consistent 4 component model (beliefs in luck, rejection of luck, being lucky, and being unlucky) across two samples (n = 250; n = 145). The scales also show adequate reliability statistics and validity by ways of comparison with other measures of beliefs around luck, peer and family ratings and expected associations with measures of personality, individual difference and well-being variables
Clinical features and long-term follow-up of 70 cases of canine idiopathic eosinophilic lung disease.
BACKGROUND: Canine idiopathic eosinophilic lung disease (ELD) is sparsely documented in the literature. METHODS: Clinical presentation and outcome of dogs diagnosed with ELD (eosinophilic bronchitis or eosinophilic bronchopneumonia) were reviewed. Subgroups were made based on chronicity of clinical signs and findings of thoracic imaging: NCI (no changes in thoracic imaging), BRON (bronchial/peribronchial pattern), INT (bronchointerstitial/interstitial/alveolar). RESULTS: Seventy cases were included. There were more young to adult, crossbreed and female dogs. Compared with the other two groups NCI dogs showed lower bronchoalveolar lavage fluid eosinophilic pleocytosis and absence of circulating eosinophilia, bronchiectasis or death due to respiratory disease. All dogs responded clinically to corticosteroids. Median treatment duration was four months. Remission (no clinical signs after treatment discontinuation for >oneâmonth) and long-term remission (>six months) was achieved in 60 per cent, and 51 per cent of patients, respectively. Relapse occurred in 26 per cent of cases after remission but was rare (3 per cent) after long-term remission. The one-year, two-year and four-year survival to death due to respiratory disease was 98 per cent, 97 per cent and 91 per cent, respectively. CONCLUSION: Prognosis and initial clinical response for ELD was generally good although achievement of long-term remission was only seen in 51 per cent of dogs. Different outcomes based on chronicity of signs, corticosteroid dose, thoracic imaging abnormalities and other clinical variables were not appreciated

Breed-related expression patterns of Ki67, ÎłH2AX, and p21 during ageing in the canine liver
Abstract: Cellular senescence is a molecular hallmark of ageing that is associated with multiple pathologies, and DNA damage marker ÎłH2AX, together with cell cycle inhibitor p21, have been used as senescence markers in multiple species including dogs. Idiopathic canine chronic hepatitis has recognised breed-related differences in predisposition and prognosis, but reasons behind this are poorly understood. This retrospective study using archived post mortem tissue aimed to provide insight into liver ageing in 51 microscopically normal canine livers across seven breed categories, including those with and without increased risk of chronic hepatitis. Immunohistochemistry was conducted for ÎłH2AX, p21, and cell proliferation marker Ki67, and the mean number of positive hepatocytes per high power field was determined. All three markers were strongly correlated to each other, but no age-dependent expression was seen in the combined study population. Overall expression levels were low in most dogs, with median values representing less than 1.5% of hepatocytes, but this increased to 20â30% in individual dogs at the upper end of the range. Individual breed differences were noted in two breeds that have increased risk of chronic hepatitis, with English Springer Spaniels having lower expression of Ki67 than other dogs, and Labradors having higher expression of Ki67 and ÎłH2AX than other dogs. These results warrant further investigation in these breeds and highlight a need to validate reliable markers of cellular senescence in dogs
AMI observations of Lynds Dark Nebulae: further evidence for anomalous cm-wave emission
Observations at 14.2 to 17.9 GHz made with the AMI Small Array towards
fourteen Lynds Dark Nebulae with a resolution of 2' are reported. These sources
are selected from the SCUBA observations of Visser et al. (2001) as small
angular diameter clouds well matched to the synthesized beam of the AMI Small
Array. Comparison of the AMI observations with radio observations at lower
frequencies with matched uv-plane coverage is made, in order to search for any
anomalous excess emission which can be attributed to spinning dust. Possible
emission from spinning dust is identified as a source within a 2' radius of the
Scuba position of the Lynds dark nebula, exhibiting an excess with respect to
lower frequency radio emission. We find five sources which show a possible
spinning dust component in their spectra. These sources have rising spectral
indices in the frequency range 14.2--17.9 GHz. Of these five one has already
been reported, L1111, we report one new definite detection, L675, and three new
probable detections (L944, L1103 and L1246). The relative certainty of these
detections is assessed on the basis of three criteria: the extent of the
emission, the coincidence of the emission with the Scuba position and the
likelihood of alternative explanations for the excess. Extended microwave
emission makes the likelihood of the anomalous emission arising as a
consequence of a radio counterpart to a protostar or a proto-planetary disk
unlikely. We use a 2' radius in order to be consistent with the IRAS
identifications of dark nebulae (Parker 1988), and our third criterion is used
in the case of L1103 where a high flux density at 850 microns relative to the
FIR data suggests a more complicated emission spectrum.Comment: submitted MNRA
