    Optimal Moments for the Analysis of Peculiar Velocity Surveys

    We present a new method for the analysis of peculiar velocity surveys which removes contributions to velocities from small scale, nonlinear velocity modes while retaining information about large scale motions. Our method utilizes Karhunen--Lo\`eve methods of data compression to construct a set of moments out of the velocities which are minimally sensitive to small scale power. The set of moments are then used in a likelihood analysis. We develop criteria for the selection of moments, as well as a statistic to quantify the overall sensitivity of a set of moments to small scale power. Although we discuss our method in the context of peculiar velocity surveys, it may also prove useful in other situations where data filtering is required.Comment: 25 Pages, 3 figures.     Low dimensional magnetic solids and single crystal elpasolites: Need for improved crystal growing techniques

    The need for extensive crystal growing experiments to develop techniques for preparing crystals suitable for magnetic anisotropy measurements and detailed X-ray and neutron diffraction studies is rationalized on the basis of the unique magnetic properties of the materials and their hydrogen bonded structures which have many features in common with metalloenzyme and metalloprotein active sites. Single crystals of the single and mixed lanthanide species are prepared by the Bridgeman technique of gradient solidification of molten samples. The effects of crystal imperfections on the optical properties of these materials are an important part of the projected research. A series of a-amido acid complexes of first row transition metals were prepared which crystallize as infinite linear chains and exhibit low dimensional magnetic ordering (one or two) at temperature below 40 K

    Studying Gender in Conference Talks -- data from the 223rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society

    We present a study on the gender balance, in speakers and attendees, at the recent major astronomical conference, the American Astronomical Society meeting 223, in Washington, DC. We conducted an informal survey, yielding over 300 responses by volunteers at the meeting. Each response included gender data about a single talk given at the meeting, recording the gender of the speaker and all question-askers. In total, 225 individual AAS talks were sampled. We analyze basic statistical properties of this sample. We find that the gender ratio of the speakers closely matched the gender ratio of the conference attendees. The audience asked an average of 2.8 questions per talk. Talks given by women had a slightly higher number of questions asked (3.2±\pm0.2) than talks given by men (2.6±\pm0.1). The most significant result from this study is that while the gender ratio of speakers very closely mirrors that of conference attendees, women are under-represented in the question-asker category. We interpret this to be an age-effect, as senior scientists may be more likely to ask questions, and are more commonly men. A strong dependence on the gender of session chairs is found, whereby women ask disproportionately fewer questions in sessions chaired by men. While our results point to laudable progress in gender-balanced speaker selection, we believe future surveys of this kind would help ensure that collaboration at such meetings is as inclusive as possible.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures.     First Detection of Millimeter Dust Emission from Brown Dwarf Disks

    We report results from the first deep millimeter continuum survey targeting Brown Dwarfs (BDs). The survey led to the first detection of cold dust in the disks around two young BDs (CFHT-BD-Tau 4 and IC348 613), with deep JCMT and IRAM observations reaching flux levels of a few mJy. The dust masses are estimated to be a few Earth masses assuming the same dust opacities as usually applied to TTauri stars.Comment: 5 pages, accepted for ApJ

    Having options alters the attractiveness of familiar versus novel faces:sex differences and similarities

    Although online dating allows us to access a wider pool of romantic partners, choice could induce an ‘assessment mindset’, orienting us toward ‘optimal’ or alternative partners and undermining our willingness to commit or remain committed to someone. Contextual changes in judgements of facial attractiveness can shed light on this issue. We directly test this proposal by activating a context where participants imagine choosing between items in picture slideshows (dates or equally attractive desserts), observing its effects on attraction to i) faces on second viewing and ii) novel versus familiar identities. Single women, relative to single men, were less attracted to the same face on second viewing (Experiments 2 and 4), with this sex difference only observed after imagining not ‘matching’ with any romantic dates in our slideshow (i.e., low choice, Experiment 4). No equivalent sex differences were observed in the absence of experimental choice slideshows (Experiment 3), and these effects (Experiment 2) were not moderated by slideshow content (romantic dates or desserts) or choice set size (five versus fifteen items). Following slideshows, novel faces were more attractive than familiar faces (Experiment 1), with this effect stronger in men than in women (Experiment 2), and stronger across both sexes after imagining ‘matching’ with desired romantic dates (i.e., high choice, Experiment 4). Our findings suggest that familiarity does not necessarily ‘breed liking’ when we have the autonomy to choose, revealing lower-order socio-cognitive mechanisms that could underpin online interactions, such as when browsing profiles and deciding how to allocate effort to different users

    Electromagnetic field solutions via the finite element method

    This thesis examines the application of the finite element method to the solution of two important equations which govern electromagnetic fields, namely, the Poisson equation and the Helmholtz equation. These equations. together with appropriate boundary conditions, describe boundary value and eigenvalue problems respectively. Attention will be restricted to boundary value and eigenvalue problems on domains in R² in which more than one dielectric medium may be present. Weak or variational statements of these problems are derived, comprising the governing partial differential equation and appropriate boundary conditions. The Galerkin method is used to pose the variational statement of the problem in a finite-dimensional subspace and the finite element method employed to generate an appropriate set of basis functions which spans this subspace. A linear matrix or linear matrix eigenvalue problem results and suitable techniques for their numerical solution are presented. Various corrputat ional aspects of the finite element method and the solution techniques are discussed. Finite element programs capable of running on a microcomputer are developed and are used to analyse a number of electromagnetic field problems. The results of these analyses are compared, where possible, with analytic solutions, and elsewhere with results obtained by other methods
