Scale and Translation Invariant Methods for Enhanced Time-Frequency Pattern Recognition
Time-frequency (t-f) analysis has clearly reached a certain maturity. One can now often provide striking visual representations of the joint time-frequency energy representation of signals. However, it has been difficult to take advantage of this rich source of information concerning the signal, especially for multidimensional signals. Properly constructed time-frequency distributions enjoy many desirable properties. Attempts to incorporate t-f analysis results into pattern recognition schemes have not been notably successful to date. Aided by Cohen's scale transform one may construct representations from the t-f results which are highly useful in pattern classification. Such methods can produce two dimensional representations which are invariant to time-shift, frequency-shift and scale changes. In addition, two dimensional objects such as images can be represented in a like manner in a four dimensional form. Even so, remaining extraneous variations often defeat the pattern classification approach. This paper presents a method based on noise subspace concepts. The noise subspace enhancement allows one to separate the desired invariant forms from extraneous variations, yielding much improved classification results. Morphological characterization of sweet and sour cherry cultivars in a germplasm bank at Portugal
Nine sweet cherry and eight sour cherry varieties located in a germplasm bank at Fundauo, Portugal, were studied from the viewpoint of characterization. Most of them were autochthonous cultivars that have a high risk of extinction since at the present they are markedly minor varieties. Morphological characteristics were evaluated in different organs: crown and trunk of the trees, leaves, flowers and fruits, over a three consecutive years period. Statistical analyses were carried out in order to detect similarities between cultivars as well as the existence of synonymies. Qualitative characteristics of the fruits were scored in order to carry out the multivariate analysis. A dendrogram of the evaluated characters shows the marked differentiation between sour and sweet cherries and suggests the existing synonymies. Conservation of the autochthonous cultivars in the future is highly recommended
Unique V3 Loop Sequence Derived from the R2 Strain of HIV-Type 1 Elicits Broad Neutralizing Antibodies
DNA vaccines expressing the envelope (Env) of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) have been relatively ineffective at generating high-titer, long-lasting, neutralizing antibodies. In this
study, DNA vaccines were constructed to express the gp120 subunit of Env from the isolate HIV-1R2 using both wild-type and codon- ptimized gene sequences. Three copies of the murine C3d were added to the carboxyl terminus to enhance the immunogenicity of the expressed fusion protein. Mice (BALB/c) vaccinated with DNA plasmid expressing the gp120R2 using codon-optimized Env sequences elicited high-titer anti-Env antibodies regardless of conjugation to C3d. In contrast, only
mice vaccinated with DNA using wild-type gp120R2 sequences fused to mC3d3, had detectable anti- Env antibodies. Interestingly, mice vaccinated with DNA expressing gp120R2 from codon-optimized
sequences elicited antibodies that neutralized both homologous and heterologous HIV-1 isolates. To determine if the unique sequence found in the crown of the V3 loop of the EnvR2 was responsible
for the elicitation of the cross-clade neutralizing antibodies, the codons encoding for the Pro-Met (amino acids 313–314) were introduced into the sequences encoding the gp120ADA (R5) or gp12089.6 (R5X4). Mice vaccinated with gp120ADA–mC3d3–DNA with the Pro–Met mutation had antibodies that neutralized HIV-1 infection, but not the gp12089.6–mC3d3–DNA. Therefore, the use of the unique sequences in the EnvR2 introduced into an R5 tropic envelope, in conjunction with C3d fusion, was effective at broadening the number of viruses that could be neutralized. However, the introduction of this same sequence into an R5X4-tropic envelope was ineffective in eliciting improved cross-clade neutralizing antibodies. Fidelity to a motivational interviewing intervention for those with post-stroke aphasia: A small scale feasibility study
Objective: Depression after stroke is common, and talk-based psychological therapies can be a useful intervention. Whilst a third of stroke survivors will experience communication difficulties impeding participation in talk-based therapies, little guidance exists to guide delivery for those with aphasia. We need to understand how to adapt talk-based therapies in the presence of aphasia. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of motivational interviewing (MI) in people with post-stroke aphasia.
Methods: In a small-scale feasibility study, consecutive patients admitted to an acute stroke ward were screened for eligibility. People with moderate to severe aphasia were eligible. Those consenting received an intervention consisting of up to eight MI sessions delivered twice per week over four weeks. Sessions were modified using aids and adaptations for aphasia. Session quality was measured using the Motivational Interviewing Skills Code (MISC) to assess MI fidelity.
Results: Three consenting patients identified early post-stroke took part; one male and two females ages ranging between 40s to 80s. Participants attended between five to eight MI sessions over four weeks. Aids and adaptations included visual cues, rating scales and modified reflections incorporating verbal and non-verbal behaviours. Sessions were tailored to individual participant need. Threshold MISC ratings could be achieved for all participants however, ratings were reduced when aids and adaptations were not used.
Discussion: This small-scale feasibility study suggests that it is feasible to adapt MI for people with moderate to severe post-stroke aphasia. These findings merit further exploration of adapted MI as an intervention for this patient group.

Improved cardiac gating at 3T with the “3D-QRS” method utilizing MRI-compatible 12-lead ECGs
Cavity optomechanics on a microfluidic resonator with water and viscous liquids
Currently, optical- or mechanical-resonances are commonly used in
microfluidic research. However, optomechanical oscillations by light pressure
were not shown with liquids. This is because replacing the surrounding air with
water inherently increases the acoustical impedance and hence the associated
acoustical radiation-losses. Here, we bridge between microfluidics and
optomechanics by fabricating hollow bubble resonators with liquid inside and
optically exciting 100-MHz vibrations with only mW optical-input power. This
constitutes the first time that any microfluidic system is optomechanically
actuated. We further prove the feasibility of microfluidic optomechanics on
liquids by demonstrating vibrations on organic fluids with viscous-dissipation
higher than blood viscosity while measuring density changes in the liquid via
the vibration frequency shift. Our device will enable using cavity
optomechanics for studying non-solid phases of matter
Precision Measurement of the Mass of the h_c(1P1) State of Charmonium
A precision measurement of the mass of the h_c(1P1) state of charmonium has
been made using a sample of 24.5 million psi(2S) events produced in e+e-
annihilation at CESR. The reaction used was psi(2S) -> pi0 h_c, pi0 -> gamma
gamma, h_c -> gamma eta_c, and the reaction products were detected in the
CLEO-c detector.
Data have been analyzed both for the inclusive reaction and for the exclusive
reactions in which eta_c decays are reconstructed in fifteen hadronic decay
channels. Consistent results are obtained in the two analyses. The averaged
results of the present measurements are M(h_c)=3525.28+-0.19 (stat)+-0.12(syst)
MeV, and B(psi(2S) -> pi0 h_c)xB(h_c -> gamma eta_c)= (4.19+-0.32+-0.45)x10^-4.

Precision Measurement of B(D+ -> mu+ nu) and the Pseudoscalar Decay Constant fD+
We measure the branching ratio of the purely leptonic decay of the D+ meson
with unprecedented precision as B(D+ -> mu+ nu) = (3.82 +/- 0.32 +/-
0.09)x10^(-4), using 818/pb of data taken on the psi(3770) resonance with the
CLEO-c detector at the CESR collider. We use this determination to derive a
value for the pseudoscalar decay constant fD+, combining with measurements of
the D+ lifetime and assuming |Vcd| = |Vus|. We find fD+ = (205.8 +/- 8.5 +/-
2.5) MeV. The decay rate asymmetry [B(D+ -> mu+ nu)-B(D- -> mu- nu)]/[B(D+ ->
mu+ nu)+B(D- -> mu- nu)] = 0.08 +/- 0.08, consistent with no CP violation. We
also set 90% confidence level upper limits on B(D+ -> tau+ nu) < 1.2x10^(-3)

J/psi and psi(2S) Radiative Transitions to eta_c
Using 24.5 million psi(2S) decays collected with the CLEO-c detector at CESR
we present the most precise measurements of magnetic dipole transitions in the
charmonium system. We measure B(psi(2S)->gamma eta_c) =
(4.32+/-0.16+/-0.60)x10^-3, B(J/psi->gamma eta_c)/B(psi(2S)->gamma eta_c) =
4.59+/-0.23+/-0.64, and B(J/psi->gamma eta_c) = (1.98+/-0.09+/-0.30)%. We
observe a distortion in the eta_c line shape due to the photon-energy
dependence of the magnetic dipole transition rate. We find that measurements of
the eta_c mass are sensitive to the line shape, suggesting an explanation for
the discrepancy between measurements of the eta_c mass in radiative transitions
and other production mechanisms.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Inclusive chi_bJ(nP) Decays to D0 X
Using Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) data collected with the CLEO III detector
we have searched for decays of chi_bJ to final states with open charm. We fully
reconstruct D0 mesons with p_D0 > 2.5 GeV/c in three decay modes (K-pi+,
K-pi+pi0, and K-pi-pi+pi+) in coincidence with radiative transition photons
that tag the production of one of the chi_bJ(nP) states. We obtain significant
signals for the two J=1 states. Recent NRQCD calculations of chi_{bJ}(nP) --> c
cbar X depend on one non-perturbative parameter per chi_bJ triplet. The
extrapolation from the observed D0 X rate over a limited momentum range to a
full c cbar X rate also depends on these same parameters. Using our data to fit
for these parameters, we extract results which agree well with NRQCD
predictions, confirming the expectation that charm production is largest for
the J=1 states. In particular, for J=1, our results are consistent with c cbar
g accounting for about one-quarter of all hadronic decays.Comment: Version 2 updates include corrections to important errors in Table V
