Position-controlled trapping of nanoparticles and quantum dots on a fiber taper

We investigate numerically and experimentally the properties of a two color optical fiber taper trap, for which the evanescent field of the modes in the fiber taper give rise to a three-dimensional trapping potential. Experimentally, we use the technique to confine colloidal nanoparticles near the surface of an optical fiber taper, and show that the trapping position of the particles is adjustable by controlling the relative power of two modes in the fiber. We also demonstrate a proof of principle application by trapping quantum dots together with gold nanoparticles in a configuration where the trapping fields double as the excitation field for the quantum dots. This scheme will allow the positioning of quantum emitters in order to adjust coupling to resonators combined with the fiber taper.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. Comments welcom

Study of ionospheric disturbances during solar flare events using the SuperDARN Hokkaido radar

It is well known that many types of ionospheric disturbances occur during solar flare events. The sudden increase in total electron content (SITEC) has been studied for several decades, but total electron content (TEC) data do not provide information on the altitudinal distribution of electron density changes. Previous studies used HF Doppler system data to investigate the contributions of the D-region and F-region ionospheric electron density changes by examining the HF radio wave frequency dependence on the Doppler shift values. In this study we examined the dependence of the elevation angle of the Doppler shift of ground scatter echoes using the SuperDARN Hokkaido radar. We analyzed solar flare events from Dec 2006 to Mar 2012. A sudden fade-out of echoes was observed in almost all the events we analyzed, which was the result of the radio absorption associated with a significant increase in electron density within the D-region ionosphere. In addition, we discovered positive Doppler shifts just before the sudden fade-out of echoes. The Doppler shift is negatively correlated with the elevation angle of received radar waves. It indicates that variation of electron density in the D-region ionosphere is dominant during solar flare events. This result is consistent with a previous study. We also compared the irradiation by X-ray and extreme ultra violet rays observed by the GOES-14 and GOES-15 satellites, which generated Doppler shifts. A positive Doppler shift is consistent with a change of X-ray flux

Ground-state properties of neutron-rich Mg isotopes

We analyze recently-measured total reaction cross sections for 24-38Mg isotopes incident on 12C targets at 240 MeV/nucleon by using the folding model and antisymmetrized molecular dynamics(AMD). The folding model well reproduces the measured reaction cross sections, when the projectile densities are evaluated by the deformed Woods-Saxon (def-WS) model with AMD deformation. Matter radii of 24-38Mg are then deduced from the measured reaction cross sections by fine-tuning the parameters of the def-WS model. The deduced matter radii are largely enhanced by nuclear deformation. Fully-microscopic AMD calculations with no free parameter well reproduce the deduced matter radii for 24-36Mg, but still considerably underestimate them for 37,38Mg. The large matter radii suggest that 37,38Mg are candidates for deformed halo nucleus. AMD also reproduces other existing measured ground-state properties (spin-parity, total binding energy, and one-neutron separation energy) of Mg isotopes. Neutron-number (N) dependence of deformation parameter is predicted by AMD. Large deformation is seen from 31Mg with N = 19 to a drip-line nucleus 40Mg with N = 28, indicating that both the N = 20 and 28 magicities disappear. N dependence of neutron skin thickness is also predicted by AMD.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.

Noticeable Reverse Shift in the Melting Temperatures of Benzene and Carbon Tetrachloride Confined within the Micropores and Mesopores of Hydrophobic Carbons

Carbon aerogels contain both mesopores and micropores. In this study, benzene/CCl4 was adsorbed in the pores of carbon aerogels (both mesopores and micropores) and their phase behaviours were examined using differential scanning calorimetry. The bulk solid benzene melted at 278 K and the melting temperatures of benzene confined inside the mesopores and micropores of carbon aerogels were 258 and 293 K, respectively. Although the melting temperature depression of condensates in mesopores is well known, the observed elevation of the melting temperature for micropores is very limited in the strongly interacted system. Similar melting behaviours were observed for the confined CCl4; depression by 45 K in mesopores and elevation by 48 K in micropores showed about two times the change as compared with that of confined benzene.ArticleADSORPTION SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY. 31(2-3):145-151 (2013)journal articl

Abstraction Model of Probing and DFA Attacks on Block Ciphers

A thread of physical attacks that try to obtain secret information from cryptographic modules has been of academic and practical interest. One of the concerns is determining its efficiency, e.g., the number of attack trials to recover the secret key. However, the accurate estimation of the attack efficiency is generally expensive because of the complexity of the physical attack on a cryptographic algorithm. Based on this background, in this study, we propose a new abstraction model for evaluating the attack efficiency of the probing and DFA attacks. The proposed model includes an abstracted attack target and attacker to determine the amount of leaked information obtained in a single attack trial. We can adapt the model flexibly to various attack scenarios and can get the attack efficiency quickly and precisely. In the probing attack on AES, the difference in the attack efficiency is only approximately 0.3% between the model and experimental values, whereas that of a previous model is approximately 16%. We also apply the probing attack on DES, and the results show that DES has a high resistance to the probing attack. Moreover, the proposed model works accurately also for the DFA attack on AES
