    Interpretation of the angular dependence of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in MgB_2

    We present detailed results for the amplitude and field dependence of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) signal arising from the electron-like π\pi sheet of Fermi surface in MgB_2. Our data and analysis show that the dip in dHvA amplitude when the field is close to the basal plane is caused by a beat between two very similar dHvA frequencies and not a spin-zero effect as previously assumed. Our results imply that the Stoner enhancement factors in MgB_2 are small on both the Sigma and Pi sheets.Comment: 4 pages with figures. Submitted to PR

    Type Ia Supernovae, Evolution, and the Cosmological Constant

    We explore the possible role of evolution in the analysis of data on SNe Ia at cosmological distances. First, using a variety of simple sleuthing techniques, we find evidence that the properties of the high and low redshift SNe Ia observed so far differ from one another. Next, we examine the effects of including simple phenomenological models for evolution in the analysis. The result is that cosmological models and evolution are highly degenerate with one another, so that the incorporation of even very simple models for evolution makes it virtually impossible to pin down the values of ΩM\Omega_M and ΩΛ\Omega_\Lambda, the density parameters for nonrelativistic matter and for the cosmological constant, respectively. Moreover, we show that if SNe Ia evolve with time, but evolution is neglected in analyzing data, then, given enough SNe Ia, the analysis hones in on values of ΩM\Omega_M and ΩΛ\Omega_\Lambda which are incorrect. Using Bayesian methods, we show that the probability that the cosmological constant is nonzero (rather than zero) is unchanged by the SNe Ia data when one accounts for the possibility of evolution, provided that we do not discriminate among open, closed and flat cosmologies a priori. The case for nonzero cosmological constant is stronger if the Universe is presumed to be flat, but still depends sensitively on the degree to which the peak luminosities of SNe Ia evolve as a function of redshift.     Binding Proteins from Animals with Possible Transport Function

    Several proteins from various animal tissues with possible transport function have been briefly described, with emphasis given to a vitamin D-induced calcium-binding protein (CaBP) implicated in calcium translocation across epithelial membranes. The latter protein was shown to be present in the small intestine, colon, kidney, and the uterus (shell gland) of the chicken. CaBP was also found in the small intestine of the rat, dog, bovine, and monkey. This protein has been isolated in high purity from chick intestinal mucosa and some of its properties determined. Its molecular weight is about 28,000, its formation constant, about 2.6 x 105 M-1, and its binding capacity, 1 calcium atom per protein molecule. Correlative studies have shown that CaBP concentration in intestinal mucosa varies with the calcium absorptive capacity of the gut, thereby suggesting that CaBP is intimately involved in the process of calcium absorption. CaBP has been localized in the brush border region of the intestinal absorptive cell and within goblet cells.     Regularization independent of the noise level: an analysis of quasi-optimality

    The quasi-optimality criterion chooses the regularization parameter in inverse problems without taking into account the noise level. This rule works remarkably well in practice, although Bakushinskii has shown that there are always counterexamples with very poor performance. We propose an average case analysis of quasi-optimality for spectral cut-off estimators and we prove that the quasi-optimality criterion determines estimators which are rate-optimal {\em on average}. Its practical performance is illustrated with a calibration problem from mathematical finance.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figure

    A Parameterized Centrality Metric for Network Analysis

    A variety of metrics have been proposed to measure the relative importance of nodes in a network. One of these, alpha-centrality [Bonacich, 2001], measures the number of attenuated paths that exist between nodes. We introduce a normalized version of this metric and use it to study network structure, specifically, to rank nodes and find community structure of the network. Specifically, we extend the modularity-maximization method [Newman and Girvan, 2004] for community detection to use this metric as the measure of node connectivity. Normalized alpha-centrality is a powerful tool for network analysis, since it contains a tunable parameter that sets the length scale of interactions. By studying how rankings and discovered communities change when this parameter is varied allows us to identify locally and globally important nodes and structures. We apply the proposed method to several benchmark networks and show that it leads to better insight into network structure than alternative methods.Comment: 11 pages, submitted to Physical Review

    The 13 November 1984 occultation of BD +08 deg 0471 by (1) Ceres

    The 13 November 1984 occultation of BD +08 deg 0471 was discovered during a photographic search carried out with the 0.5 meter Carnegie Double Astrograph at Lick Observatory and the Lowell Observatory PDS microdensitometer. Such a search was stimulated by the curious fact that few favorably located occultations of AGK3 or SAO catalog starts by Ceres will occur during the 1980s. The occultation on 13 November, however, is a particularly good event. The star is 1000 cubic M in V, yielding a predicted drop at occultation of about 10%. Such a drop can be detected by small telescopes equipped with photoelectric photometers, but is too small to be seen visually. The track was predicted to cross the Caribbean, Florida, southern Texas, and Mexico. Based on this prediction, preparations were made to observe the event in Mexico using four portable occultation data systems
