Strong absorption and selective thermal emission from a mid-infrared metamaterial
We demonstrate thin-film metamaterials with resonances in the mid-infrared
wavelength range. Our structures are numerically modeled and experimentally
characterized by reflection and angularly-resolved thermal emission
spectroscopy. We demonstrate strong and controllable absorption resonances
across the mid-infrared wavelength range. In addition, the polarized thermal
emission from these samples is shown to be highly selective and largely
independent of emission angles from normal to 45 degrees. Experimental results
are compared to numerical models with excellent agreement. Such structures hold
promise for large-area, low-cost metamaterial coatings for control of gray- or
black-body thermal signatures, as well as for possible mid-IR sensing

Social dynamics in conferences: analyses of data from the Live Social Semantics application
Popularity and spread of online social networking in recent years has given a great momentum to the study of dynamics and patterns of social interactions. However, these studies have often been confined to the online world, neglecting its interdependencies with the offline world. This is mainly due to the lack of real data that spans across this divide. The Live Social Semantics application is a novel platform that dissolves this divide, by collecting and integrating data about people from (a) their online social networks and tagging activities from popular social networking sites, (b) their publications and co-authorship networks from semantic repositories, and (c) their real-world face-to-face contacts with other attendees collected via a network of wearable active sensors. This paper investigates the data collected by this application during its deployment at three major conferences, where it was used by more than 400 people. Our analyses show the robustness of the patterns of contacts at various conferences, and the influence of various personal properties (e.g. seniority, conference attendance) on social networking patterns

A new source detection algorithm using FDR
The False Discovery Rate (FDR) method has recently been described by Miller
et al (2001), along with several examples of astrophysical applications. FDR is
a new statistical procedure due to Benjamini and Hochberg (1995) for
controlling the fraction of false positives when performing multiple hypothesis
testing. The importance of this method to source detection algorithms is
immediately clear. To explore the possibilities offered we have developed a new
task for performing source detection in radio-telescope images, Sfind 2.0,
which implements FDR. We compare Sfind 2.0 with two other source detection and
measurement tasks, Imsad and SExtractor, and comment on several issues arising
from the nature of the correlation between nearby pixels and the necessary
assumption of the null hypothesis. The strong suggestion is made that
implementing FDR as a threshold defining method in other existing
source-detection tasks is easy and worthwhile. We show that the constraint on
the fraction of false detections as specified by FDR holds true even for highly
correlated and realistic images. For the detection of true sources, which are
complex combinations of source-pixels, this constraint appears to be somewhat
less strict. It is still reliable enough, however, for a priori estimates of

Negative differential Rashba effect in two-dimensional hole systems
We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that two-dimensional (2D)
heavy hole systems in single heterostructures exhibit a \emph{decrease} in
spin-orbit interaction-induced spin splitting with an increase in perpendicular
electric field. Using front and back gates, we measure the spin splitting as a
function of applied electric field while keeping the density constant. Our
results are in contrast to the more familiar case of 2D electrons where spin

Waiting time dynamics of priority-queue networks
We study the dynamics of priority-queue networks, generalizations of the
binary interacting priority queue model introduced by Oliveira and Vazquez
[Physica A {\bf 388}, 187 (2009)]. We found that the original AND-type protocol
for interacting tasks is not scalable for the queue networks with loops because
the dynamics becomes frozen due to the priority conflicts. We then consider a
scalable interaction protocol, an OR-type one, and examine the effects of the
network topology and the number of queues on the waiting time distributions of
the priority-queue networks, finding that they exhibit power-law tails in all
cases considered, yet with model-dependent power-law exponents. We also show
that the synchronicity in task executions, giving rise to priority conflicts in
the priority-queue networks, is a relevant factor in the queue dynamics that

information leads to networks where the different vertices have widely
different number of edges to other vertices, and where the topology has
