Pulsed electron beam induced recrystallization and damage in GaAs
Single-pulse electron-beam irradiations of 300-keV 10^(15)Kr+/cm^2 or 300-keV 3Ă10^(12)Se+/cm^2 implanted layers in unencapsulated GaAs are studied as a function of the electron beam fluence. The electron beam pulse had a mean electron energy of ~-20 keV and a time duration of ~-10^(â7) s. Analyses by means of MeV He + channeling and TEM show the existence of narrow fluence window (0.4â0.7 J/cm^2) within which amorphous layers can be sucessfully recrystallized, presumably in the liquid phase regime. Do oil and gas platforms off California reduce recruitment of bocaccio (Sebastes paucispinis) to natural habitat? An analysis based on trajectories derived from high-frequency radar
To investigate the possibility that oil and gas platforms may reduce recruitment of rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) to natural habitat, we simulated drift pathways termed âtrajectoriesâ in our model) from an existing oil platform to nearshore habitat using current measurements from high-frequency (HF) radars. The trajectories originated at Platform Irene, located west of Point Conception, California, during two recruiting seasons for bocaccio (Sebastes paucispinis): May through August, 1999 and 2002. Given that pelagic juvenile bocaccio dwell near the surface, the trajectories estimate transport to habitat. We assumed that appropriate shallow water juvenile habitat exists inshore of the 50-m isobath. Results from 1999 indicated that 10% of the trajectories represent transport to habitat, whereas 76% represent transport across the offshore boundary. For 2002, 24% represent transport to habitat, and 69% represent transport across the offshore boundary. Remaining trajectories (14% and 7% for 1999 and 2002, respectively) exited the coverage area either northward or southward along isobaths. Deployments of actual drifters (with 1-m drogues) from a previous multiyear study provided measurements originating near Platform Irene from May through August. All but a few of the drifters moved offshore, as was also shown with the HF radar-derived trajectories. These results indicate that most juvenile bocaccio settling on the platform would otherwise have been transported offshore and perished in the absence of a platform. However, these results do not account for the swimming behavior of juvenile bocaccio, about which little is known
Steady-state thermally annealed GaAs with room-temperature-implanted Si
Semi-insulating Cr-doped single-crystal GaAs samples were implanted at room temperature with 300-keV Si ions in the dose range of (0.17â2.0)Ă1015 cmâ2 and were subsequently steady-state annealed at 900 and 950°C for 30 min in a H2 ambient with a Si3N4 coating. Differential Hall measurements showed that an upper threshold of about 2Ă1018/cm3 exists for the free-electron concentration. The as-implanted atomic-Si profile measured by SIMS follows the theoretical prediction, but is altered during annealing. The Cr distribution also changes, and a band of dislocation loops ~2â3 kĂ
wide is revealed by cross-sectional TEM at a mean depth of Rp~3 kĂ
. Incomplete electrical activation of the Si is shown to be the primary cause for the effect
Boeing 747 aircraft with large external pod for transporting outsize cargo
The effect on structural arrangement, system weight, and range performance of the cargo pod payload carrying capability was determined to include either the bridge launcher or a spacelab module on a Boeing 747 aircraft. Modifications to the carrier aircraft and the installation time required to attach the external pod to the 747 were minimized. Results indicate that the increase in pod size was minimal, and that the basic 747 structure was adequate to safely absorb the load induced by ground or air operation while transporting either payload
A study of high-altitude manned research aircraft employing strut-braced wings of high-aspect-ratio
The effect of increased wing aspect ratio of subsonic aircraft on configurations with and without strut bracing. Results indicate that an optimum cantilever configuration, with a wing aspect ratio of approximately 26, has a 19% improvement in cruise range when compared to a baseline concept with a wing aspect ratio of approximately 10. An optimum strut braced configuration, with a wing aspect ratio of approximately 28, has a 31% improvment in cruise range when compared to the same baseline concept. This improvement is mainly due to the estimated reduction in wing weight resulting from use of lifting struts. All configurations assume the same mission payload and fuel. The drag characteristics of the wings are enhanced with the use of laminar flow airfoils. A method for determining the extent of attainable natural laminar flow, and methods for preliminary structural design and for aerodynamic analysis of wings lifting struts are presented

Ramanujan sums analysis of long-period sequences and 1/f noise
Ramanujan sums are exponential sums with exponent defined over the
irreducible fractions. Until now, they have been used to provide converging
expansions to some arithmetical functions appearing in the context of number
theory. In this paper, we provide an application of Ramanujan sum expansions to
periodic, quasiperiodic and complex time series, as a vital alternative to the
Fourier transform. The Ramanujan-Fourier spectrum of the Dow Jones index over
13 years and of the coronal index of solar activity over 69 years are taken as
illustrative examples. Distinct long periods may be discriminated in place of
the 1/f^{\alpha} spectra of the Fourier transform.Comment: 10 page
Torsional response and stiffening of individual multi-walled carbon nanotubes
We report on the characterization of torsional oscillators which use
multi-walled carbon nanotubes as the spring elements. Through
atomic-force-microscope force-distance measurements we are able to apply
torsional strains to the nanotubes and measure their torsional spring constants
and effective shear moduli. We find that the effective shear moduli cover a
broad range, with the largest values near the theoretically predicted value.
The data also suggest that the nanotubes are stiffened by repeated flexing.Comment: 4 page
Rhesus Monkeys (Macaca mulatta) Maintain Learning Set Despite Second-order Stimulus-response Spatial Discontiguity
In many discrimination-learning tests, spatial separation between stimuli and response loci disrupts performance in rhesus macaques. However, monkeys are unaffected by such stimulusresponse spatial discontiguity when responses occur through joystick-based computerized movement of a cursor. To examine this discrepancy, five monkeys were tested on a learning-set task that required them to touch computer-graphic levers {which differed in location across experimental phases) with a cursor in order to select an associated test stimulus. The task produced both first-order (joystick and lever) and second-order (lever and stimuli) spatial discontiguity between the stimuli to be discriminated and the discriminative response. Performance was significantly better than chance for all lever locations including locations in which selection of the correct lever required moving the cursor away from the positive stimulus. Thus, rhesus macaques do not attend simply to the region around the cursor in these computerized tests, but rather they attend to relevant stimulus loci even when these are discontiguous with response and reward areas
Syntax for free: representing syntax with binding using parametricity
We show that, in a parametric model of polymorphism, the type ââα.â((αâââα)âââα)âââ(αâââαâââα)âââα is isomorphic to closed de Bruijn terms. That is, the type of closed higher-order abstract syntax terms is isomorphic to a concrete representation. To demonstrate the proof we have constructed a model of parametric polymorphism inside the Coq proof assistant. The proof of the theorem requires parametricity over Kripke relations. We also investigate some variants of this representation
