The Key Evaluation Report
The Key Project received Big Lottery funding to continue its work in 2017, aiming to work with disadvantaged girls and young women at high risk of abuse aged between 13 and 25 within the Leeds area. The project is located within Women’s Health Matters, a charitable provider of gender-specific services in Leeds. This report presents the overall evaluation findings from a longitudinal co-produced model of data collection conducted by the Centre for Health Promotion Research, Leeds Beckett University
Effect of Alkyl Chain Length and Linker Atom on the Crystal Packing in 6,12-Dialkoxy- And 6,12-Dialkylsulfanyl-Benzo[1,2- b:4,5- b′]bis[ b]benzothiophenes
The effect of varying the chain length on the solid state conformation and packing of 6,12-dialkoxy- and 6,12-dialkylsulfanyl-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]bis[b]benzothiophenes has been studied. The compounds were prepared by SNAr reaction of 6,12-difluorbenzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]bis[b]benzothiophene with alkoxides or alkanethiolates derived from C7-C10 alcohols and alkanethiols. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that all but two compounds crystallize in the triclinic space group P1. Two compounds were obtained as monoclinic crystals with space group P21/c. The alkoxy substituted compounds adopted a molecular conformation with a step from the core and a gauche conformation about the C1′-C2′ bond placing the alkyl chains close to parallel with the pentacyclic arene ring system, whereas in the alkylsufanyl derivatives, the alkyl chains were arranged strongly deviated from the plane of the ring, with the sulfur atom antiperiplanar to C3′ of the alkyl chain. NMR measurement of T1 relaxation in CDCl3 showed both the alkoxy and alkylsulfanyl substituents to be freely rotating at ambient temperature in solution, indicating the orientation of the chains in the solid state was due to packing interactions during crystallization
Evaluation Report; YouTube Takeover project (Shift.ms)
One of Shift.ms’ innovative digital interventions was our Twitter takeover: each weekend control of our account was handed to a different person from the MS community. People with MS (MSers) report that interacting with a different individual each week helped reduce feelings of isolation and reinforced a sense of community. This report presents the findings from an evaluation of The YouTube Takeover co-produced by the Centre for Health Promotion Research, Leeds Beckett University and Shift.ms
Evaluation of Age UK Eatwell and Livewell Programme
The Eatwell and Livewell Programme was set up in 2014 to provide support in the malnutrition pathway for older people within two Yorkshire areas. This report presents the findings from an evaluation of the programme conducted by the Centre for Health Promotion Research, Leeds Beckett University. It presents evidence about the project’s background, its progress in relation to target outputs, the outcomes for service users, and learning from both delivery sites
BeppoSAX Observations of the Maser Sy2 Galaxy: ESO103-G35
We have made BeppoSAX observations of the Seyfert 2/1.9 galaxy ESO103-G35,
which contains a nuclear maser source and is known to be heavily absorbed in
the X-rays. Analysis of the X-ray spectra observed by SAX in October 1996 and
1997 yields a spectral index 0.74+/-0.07, typical of Seyfert galaxies and
consistent with earlier observations of this source. The strong, soft X-ray
absorption has column density 1.79E(23)/cm^2, again consistent with earlier
results. The best fitting spectrum is that of a power law with a high energy
cutoff at 29+/-10 keV, a cold, marginally resolved Fe Kalpha line with EW 290
eV (1996) and a mildly ionized Fe K-edge at 7.37 keV. The Kalpha line and cold
absorption are consistent with origin in a accretion disk/torus through which
our line-of-sight passes at a radial distance of pc. The Fe K-edge is
mildly ionized suggesting the presence of ionized gas probably in the inner
accretion disk, close to the central source or in a separate warm absorber. The
data quality is too low to distinguish between these possibilities but the
edge-on geometry implied by the water maser emission favors the former.
Comparison with earlier observations of ESO103-G35 shows little/no change in
spectral parameters while the flux changes by factors of a few on timescales of
a few months. The 2--10 keV flux decreased by a factor of 2.7 between Oct 1996
and Oct 1997 with no detectable change in the count rate >20 keV suggesting a
constant or delayed response reflection component. The high energy cutoff is
lower than the typical 300keV values seen in Seyfert galaxies. A significant
subset of similar sources would affect current models of the AGN contribution
to the cosmic X-ray background which generally assume a high energy cutoff of
300 keV.Comment: 22 pages, postscript file, accepted for publication in Ap

Classroom dialogue and digital technologies: A scoping review
AbstractThis article presents a systematic scoping review of the literature focusing on interactions between classroom dialogue and digital technology. The first review of its type in this area, it both maps extant research and, through a process of thematic synthesis, investigates the role of technology in supporting classroom dialogue. In total, 72 studies (published 2000–2016) are analysed to establish the characteristics of existing evidence and to identify themes. The central intention is to enable researchers and others to access an extensive base of studies, thematically analysed, when developing insights and interpretations in a rapidly changing field of study. The discussion illustrates the interconnectedness of key themes, placing the studies in a methodological and theoretical context and examining challenges for the future.</jats:p
X-ray Spectroscopy of Candidate Ultracompact X-ray Binaries
We present high-resolution spectroscopy of the neutron star/low-mass X-ray
binaries (LMXBs) 4U 1850-087 and 4U 0513-40 as part of our continuing study of
known and candidate ultracompact binaries. The LMXB 4U 1850-087 is one of four
systems in which we had previously inferred an unusual Ne/O ratio in the
absorption along the line of sight, most likely from material local to the
binaries. However, our recent Chandra X-ray Observatory LETGS spectrum of 4U
1850-087 finds a Ne/O ratio by number of 0.22+/-0.05, smaller than previously
measured and consistent with the expected interstellar value. We propose that
variations in the Ne/O ratio due to source variability, as previously observed
in these sources, can explain the difference between the low- and
high-resolution spectral results for 4U 1850-087. Our XMM-Newton RGS
observation of 4U 0513-40 also shows no unusual abundance ratios in the
absorption along the line of sight. We also present spectral results from a
third candidate ultracompact binary, 4U 1822-000, whose spectrum is well fit by
an absorbed power-law + blackbody model with absorption consistent with the
expected interstellar value. Finally, we present the non-detection of a fourth
candidate ultracompact binary, 4U 1905+000, with an upper limit on the source
luminosity of < 1 x 10^{32} erg s^{-1}. Using archival data, we show that the
source has entered an extended quiescent state.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication to the Astrophysical
