    Exploring the embodied subtleties of collaborative creativity: what organisations can learn from dance

    This study illustrates the value of embodied subtleties in the process of collaborative creativity. Drawing on a sensory ethnography of two dance productions, we illustrate the fine-grained ways in which professional dancers negotiate creative processes behind the scenes. We identify three aspects through which collaborative creativity emerges from bodily subtleties: (1) moving beyond individual bodies towards collective ambitions, (2) relating to colleagues’ micro-gestures and bodily nuances, and (3) the role of ‘serious play’ between bodies in setting the scene for the first two aspects to occur. The findings will contribute to our understanding of the practice of collaborative creativity, which we treat as not only a mental but also a highly intimate bodily practice. We conclude that appreciating sensory micro-dynamics between oneself and one’s colleagues is crucial for creative collaboration, which is increasingly necessary for management learning in contemporary organisations.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

    Complete and safe resection of challenging retroperitoneal tumors: anticipation of multi-organ and major vascular resection and use of adjunct procedures.

    BackgroundRetroperitoneal tumors are often massive and can involve adjacent organs and/or vital structures, making them difficult to resect. Completeness of resection is within the surgeon's control and critical for long-term survival, particularly for malignant disease. Few studies directly address strategies for complete and safe resection of challenging retroperitoneal tumors.MethodsFifty-six patients representing 63 cases of primary or recurrent retroperitoneal tumor resection between 2004-2009 were identified and a retrospective chart review was performed. Rates of complete resection, use of adjunct procedures, and perioperative complications were recorded.ResultsIn 95% of cases, complete resection was achieved. Fifty-eight percent of these cases required en bloc multi-organ resection, and 8% required major vascular resection. Complete resection rates were higher for primary versus recurrent disease. Adjunct procedures (ureteral stents, femoral nerve monitoring, posterior laminotomy, etc.) were used in 54% of cases. Major postoperative complications occurred in 16% of cases, and one patient died (2% mortality).ConclusionsComplete resection of challenging retroperitoneal tumors is feasible and can be done safely with important pre- and intraoperative considerations in mind

    Complex Factorisation and Recursion for One-Loop Amplitudes

    We consider the factorisation of one-loop amplitudes at complex kinematic points. By determining the terms that are absent for real kinematics, we can construct a recursive ansatz for the purely rational pieces of one-loop amplitudes in massless theories. We illustrate this method by verifying the Bern et.al. n-point ansatze for the single-minus one-loop amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory and by constructing the scalar contribution to the one-loop five graviton MHV scattering amplitude

    Nanoindentation at elevated temperatures

    Relating the creep response observed with high temperature instrumented indentation experiments to macroscopic uniaxial creep response is of great practical value. In this review, we present an overview of various methods currently being used to measure creep at small scales with instrumented indentation, with a focus on geometrically self-similar indenters, and their relative merits and demerits from an experimental perspective. A comparison of the various methods to use those instrumented indentation results to predict the uniaxial power law creep response of a wide range of materials (stress exponent of 1 to 8), will be presented to assess their validity. The interplay of size dependent hardness effects, strain rate effects and temperature effects will also be discussed. The extension of rapid testing and mapping techniques to high temperatures will also be demonstrated. Figure 1 shows a map of hardness vs position in a carbide containing steel at 300 degrees C. These techniques are extended to stress exponent and pre-exponential maps determined at high temperatures. Please click Additional Files below to see the full abstract
