An analysis of the oil of echinocystis fabacea seeds

    Get PDF
Echinocystis fabaceae, commonly called “Man Root” because of the peculiar shape of the root, not unlike that of a man, finds abundant occurrence in the central valleys of California. This plant, a member of the wild cucumber family, is of particular interest because it is an oilseed plant. The variety agrestis is especially common around Stockton. Other varieties are found throughout the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys and in the Coast Range Mountains. Oils have played an important part throughout history and are continuing to do so in our present economy. An investigation of the oils of Echinocystis fabaceae seeds proved to be of considerable interest. An extensive search of the literature revealed that only a slight amount of work has been done on these oils. M. R. Daughters made a very brief study of them in 1918. This paper will discuss several of the analytical methods employed in the analysis of fats and oils and evaluate them in terms of their applicability to the oils of wild cucumber seeds

The role of value in Karl Mannheim's sociology of knowledge

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityThe problem of the dissertation was to discover the axiology basis upon which Karl Mannheim has developed his sociology of knowledge and accordingly his social philosophy. Integral aspects of the problem included the question of the link between Mannheim's sociology of knowledge and his axiological absolutism, on the one hand, and axiological relativism on the other. The method of the dissertation included: (a) Exposition. -- Chapters II and III were primarily expository, setting forth the main outlines of Mannheim's sociology of knowledge and the epistemological conclusions he has drawn. (b) Analysis. -- Chapter IV was primarily analytic, and attempted to elicit the value components of Mannheim's system through a series of categorical analyses. These categories were educed from Mannheim's writings and are basically reflections of perenially recurring problems in the field of value theory [TRUNCATED

Distorted body image and anorexia complicating cystic fibrosis in an adolescent

AbstractA 15 year old girl with cystic fibrosis has been dieting and losing weight for 2 years. Despite being underweight she aims to lose a further 6 kg to become a “size zero”. Her falling weight has been associated with deteriorations in her general health and lung function, which is exacerbated by poor compliance. The situation has been complicated further by her becoming pregnant

Fluorescent Lyman-alpha Emission from Gas Near a QSO at Redshift 4.28

    Get PDF
We use integral field spectroscopy with the Gemini North Telescope to detect probable fluorescent Ly-alpha emission from gas lying close to the luminous QSO PSS 2155+1358 at redshift 4.28. The emission is most likely coming not from primordial gas, but from a multi-phase, chemically enriched cloud of gas lying about 50 kpc from the QSO. It appears to be associated with a highly ionised associated absorber seen in the QSO spectrum. With the exception of this gas cloud, the environment of the QSO is remarkably free of neutral hydrogen. We also marginally detect Ly-alpha emission from a foreground sub-Damped-Ly-alpha absorption-line system.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

Intergenerational Service Learning Program Improves Aging Knowledge and Expectations and Reduces Ageism in Younger Adults

    Get PDF
This article discusses a study which evaluated the effects of an intergenerational service-learning exergaming program for older adults on younger adults’ aging knowledge, expectations, and perceptions. Eighteen college students (ages 19-26 years) served as trainers for an 8-week exergaming physical activity program for older adults (12 contact hours). Questionnaires assessing aging knowledge, ageist attitudes and aging expectations were completed at Weeks 1, 8, and 25 (follow-up); program evaluations were completed at Weeks 8 and 25. Significant improvement from Week 1 to Week 25 was found for: Aging knowledge scores (

Growth or decline in the Church of England during the decade of Evangelism: did the Churchmanship of the Bishop matter?

    Get PDF
The Decade of Evangelism occupied the attention of the Church of England throughout the 1990s. The present study employs the statistics routinely published by the Church of England in order to assess two matters: the extent to which these statistics suggest that the 43 individual dioceses finished the decade in a stronger or weaker position than they had entered it and the extent to which, according to these statistics, the performance of dioceses led by bishops shaped in the Evangelical tradition differed from the performance of dioceses led by bishops shaped in the Catholic tradition. The data demonstrated that the majority of dioceses were performing less effectively at the end of the decade than at the beginning, in terms of a range of membership statistics, and that the rate of decline varied considerably from one diocese to another. The only exception to the trend was provided by the diocese of London, which experienced some growth. The data also demonstrated that little depended on the churchmanship of the diocesan bishop in shaping diocesan outcomes on the performance indicators employed in the study

Utility of the Living (Well Through) Intergenerational Fitness and Exercise Program as a County-Delivered Extension Program

    Get PDF
Rural-residing older adults are not participating in regular physical activity. Extension is in an excellent position to fill this programming void through transdisciplinary programming such as the Living (well through) Intergenerational Fitness and Exercise (LIFE) program. Qualitative evaluation was conducted to assess the LIFE program\u27s utility as an Extension-delivered program. Nearly all LIFE program managers were satisfied with the program and were likely to recommend it to others. Best liked program features and attributes were the ready-to-use curriculum, corresponding training, and intergenerational and rural focuses. These results suggest that the LIFE program is viewed as appropriate for delivery by Extension
