Coherent Synchrotron Radiation and Space Charge for a 1-D Bunch on an Arbitrary Planar Orbit
Realistic modeling of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) and the space charge force in single-pass systems and rings usually requires at least a two-dimensional (2-D) description of the charge/current density of the bunch. Since that leads to costly computations, one often resorts to a 1-D model of the bunch for first explorations. This paper provides several improvements to previous 1-D theories, eliminating unnecessary approximations and physical restrictions
Perspectives regarding cannabis use: Results from a qualitative study of individuals engaged in substance use treatment in Georgia and Connecticut
Objective: Cannabis use is increasingly pervasive throughout the U.S. People in treatment for substance use disorders (SUD) may be especially at-risk of harm due to this changing context of cannabis in the U.S. This study’s objective was to qualitatively describe experiences and beliefs around cannabis among people who had entered treatment for any SUD in the past 12-months.
Methods: From May to November of 2022, we conducted 27 semi-structured interviews (n=16 in Georgia, n=11 in Connecticut) with individuals in treatment for SUD in Georgia and Connecticut. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed using an emergent approach.
Results: All participants had used cannabis in the past. Four themes emerged from the interviews. Participants: (1) perceived cannabis as an important contributor to non-cannabis substance use initiation in adolescence; (2) viewed cannabis as a substance with the potential to improve health with fewer side effects than prescription medications; (3) expressed conflicting opinions regarding cannabis as a trigger or tool to manage cravings for other non-cannabis substances currently; and 4) described concerns related to negative legal, social service, and treatment-related consequences as well as negative peer perception relating to the use of cannabis.
Conclusion: Although participants described cannabis’s important role as an initiatory drug in adolescence and young adulthood, many felt that cannabis was a medicinal substance for a range of health challenges. These findings suggest SUD treatment clinicians should address medicinal beliefs related to cannabis among their clients and emphasizes the need for research on cannabis use and SUD treatment outcomes

Progress on a Vlasov Treatment of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation From Arbitrary Planar Orbits
We report on our progress in the development of a fully self-consistent Vlasov treatment of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) effects on particle bunches traveling on arbitrary planar orbits. First we outline our Vlasov approach and the approximation we are currently studying. Then we discuss recent numerical results for a benchmark model studied extensively with codes by several authors
Autism and the U.K. secondary school experience
This research investigated the self-reported mainstream school experiences of those diagnosed on the autistic spectrum compared with the typically developing school population. Existing literature identifies four key areas that affect the quality of the school experience for students with autism: social skills, perceived relationships with teaching staff, general school functioning, and interpersonal strengths of the young person. These areas were explored in a mainstream U.K. secondary school with 14 students with autism and 14 age and gender matched students without autism, using self-report questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analyses showed consistent school experiences for both groups, although content analysis of interview data highlighted some differences in the ways in which the groups perceive group work, peers, and teaching staff within school. Implications for school inclusion are discussed, drawing attention to how staff awareness of autism could improve school experience and success for students with autism attending mainstream schools
Impact of the Wiggler Coherent Synchrotron Radiation Impedance on the Beam Instability
Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) can play an important role by not only
increasing the energy spread and emittance of a beam, but also leading to a
potential instability. Previous studies of the CSR induced longitudinal
instability were carried out for the CSR impedance due to dipole magnets.
However, many storage rings include long wigglers where a large fraction of the
synchrotron radiation is emitted. This includes high-luminosity factories such
as DAPHNE, PEP-II, KEK-B, and CESR-C as well as the damping rings of future
linear colliders. In this paper, the instability due to the CSR impedance from
a wiggler is studied assuming a large wiggler parameter . The primary
consideration is a low frequency microwave-like instability, which arises near
the pipe cut-off frequency. Detailed results are presented on the growth rate
and threshold for the damping rings of several linear collider designs.
Finally, the optimization of the relative fraction of damping due to the
wiggler systems is discussed for the damping rings.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Calculation of the Coherent Synchrotron Radiation Impedance from a Wiggler
Most studies of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) have only considered the
radiation from independent dipole magnets. However, in the damping rings of
future linear colliders, a large fraction of the radiation power will be
emitted in damping wigglers. In this paper, the longitudinal wakefield and
impedance due to CSR in a wiggler are derived in the limit of a large wiggler
parameter . After an appropriate scaling, the results can be expressed in
terms of universal functions, which are independent of . Analytical
asymptotic results are obtained for the wakefield in the limit of large and
small distances, and for the impedance in the limit of small and high

The digital archive of the International Halley Watch
The International Halley Watch was established to coordinate, collect, archive, and distribute the scientific data from Comet P/Halley that would be obtained from both the ground and space. This paper describes one of the end products of that effort, namely the IHW Digital Archive. The IHW Digital Archive consists of 26 CD-ROM's containing over 32 gigabytes of data from the 9 IHW disciplines as well as data from the 5 spacecraft missions flown to comet P/Haley and P/Giacobini-Zinner. The total archive contains over 50,000 observations by 1,500 observers from at least 40 countries. The first 24 CD's, which are currently available, contain data from the 9 IHW disciplines. The two remaining CD's will have the spacecraft data and should be available within the next year. A test CD-ROM of these data has been created and is currently under review
