A kick in the guts:Insulin resistance, gut microbiota and cardiometabolic diseases

In this thesis we show that bacteria in the gut are associated to many aspects of metabolism in prediabetes, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. We identified changes in metabolism associated to insulin resistance in individuals with the metabolic syndrome, which were previously unknown. In particular certain proteins related to inflammation were strongly associated to insulin resistance. Previous studies have indicated that compounds produced by bacteria in the gut can have beneficial or detrimental effects on health. One metabolite called Imidazole propionate (ImP) from histidine metabolism has been shown to result in insulin resistance when injected to mice. This is of importance, because histidine is abundant in proteins such as nuts and meat and typically individuals with diabetes get recommendations to consume less sugars and simple carbohydrates and more proteins. Therefore, the questions we wanted to answer was: (1) is dietary histidine resulting in higher levels of ImP and (2) is supplementation of histidine detrimental for insulin resistance? We found that histidine supplementation increased ImP levels but that histidine supplementation also improved blood sugar levels, indicating an improvement in insulin resistance. Finally, we show that bacteria in the gut are associated to cardiovascular diseases in a multi ethnic study. We find a trophic network of bacteria to be inversely associated to cardiovascular diseases and triglyceride levels. We hypothesize that gut microbiota might influence cardiovascular diseases by affecting blood lipid levels. However, future studies should confirm our findings in a randomized trial

The livelihoods of Sundanese fishermen in Cijulang Indonesia and their implications for fisheries management

Masters Research - Master of ScienceThis thesis investigates the livelihoods of fishermen in the villages in Cijulang, West Java, Indonesia. The research used community based coastal resource management and participatory coastal resource assessment to provide an indepth look at three small fishing communities. It addresses the perceived low income and standard of living of small-scale fishers in Indonesia and, by doing so, informs on the validity of these problems, factors that may be causing these problems, and possible fisheries management interventions that may be considered to improve the situation of fishers in one area of Indonesia. The thesis presents the results of research conducted in the three fishing villages in 2004 and 2005, the economic and social impact of an 85% fuel price rise and its relationship to fishing gear ownership and use. The thesis looks at the assumption that fishermen are the ‘poorest of the poor’, discusses the large disparity between the incomes of fishers from both an inter- and intra- village perspective, and highlights that ownership and use of different types of fishing gears has a strong impact on the earning power of small-scale fishermen. The thesis also investigates the impact of the environment on fishing frequency and challenges the assumption that research conducted in one part of Indonesia is valid for other areas. It does this through describing the concepts of an ‘angry ocean’ and ‘calm sea’, how these impact on fishing frequency, and the need to take meteorological and oceanic conditions into consideration when assessing managerial interventions and programs for small-scale fisheries in Indonesia

Individuelle Bedeutungen von Langzeitarbeitslosigkeit in der sich wandelnden Arbeitsgesellschaft: Subjektive Interpretationen von sozialer Anerkennung bei Langzeitarbeitslosen

In der qualitativen Forschungsarbeit wird die Frage bearbeitet: "Wie interpretieren sich von Langzeitarbeitslosigkeit betroffene Menschen hinsichtlich ihrer sozialen Anerkennung in einer Arbeitsgesellschaft, in der Arbeit als verpflichtender Wert eine zentrale Stellung einnimmt und in der aber zugleich nicht genügend Arbeitsmöglichkeiten zur Verfügung stehen?". Dazu wird zuerst das Verhältnis von Erwerbsarbeit und Arbeitsgesellschaft diskutiert, um so ein begriffliches Verständnis von Erwerbsarbeit herauszuarbeiten. Anschließend werden Wandlungsprozesse der Arbeitsgesellschaft betrachtet, um einen Bedeutungszuwachs von Erwerbsarbeit im Zuge dieses zu verdeutlichen und um das Konzept der Ökonomisierung des Sozialen und der ökonomischen Einstellung einzuführen. In das bis dahin Skizzierte, soll dann über den Zwischenschritt der Einführung eines Konzeptes von sozialer Anerkennung ein Verständnis von Arbeitslosigkeit und Langzeitarbeitslosigkeit platziert werden. Aus den dadurch deutlich werdenden Schnittflächen, Kontrasten und Querverbindungen, kann dem dann anstehenden Forschungsvorhaben eine Form gegeben werden. Das Konzept der sozialen Anerkennung ist dabei bewusst zwischen den Betrachtungen zur Arbeitsgesellschaft und denen zur Arbeitslosigkeit platziert. Denn dieses soll bei der Explikation des Begriffsverständnisses von Langzeitarbeitslosigkeit, schon als Hintergrundfolie mitgedacht werden können. Daran anschließend wird eine theoretische Verknüpfung von Langzeitarbeitslosigkeit und sozialer Anerkennung vorgenommen und mit einem Blick auf den aktuellen Forschungsstand zur Thematik der Übergang zum Forschungsteil geschaffen
