Test data were recorded for overall and blade element performance with both uniform and distorted inlet flows.     Photon counting compressive depth mapping

    We demonstrate a compressed sensing, photon counting lidar system based on the single-pixel camera. Our technique recovers both depth and intensity maps from a single under-sampled set of incoherent, linear projections of a scene of interest at ultra-low light levels around 0.5 picowatts. Only two-dimensional reconstructions are required to image a three-dimensional scene. We demonstrate intensity imaging and depth mapping at 256 x 256 pixel transverse resolution with acquisition times as short as 3 seconds. We also show novelty filtering, reconstructing only the difference between two instances of a scene. Finally, we acquire 32 x 32 pixel real-time video for three-dimensional object tracking at 14 frames-per-second.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure

    Arbitration is a private-sector court. Rather than litigating in a government court (in which a judge or jury resolves the dispute), many parties form contracts obligating themselves to have their disputes resolved by an arbitrator. The arbitrator’s decision in such a case, typically called an arbitration “award,” can be enforced in court. To do this, the party that won in arbitration can get a court order “confirming” the arbitration award. “A confirmed award in favor of the plaintiff (or ‘claimant’) is enforced in the same manner as other court judgments,” and an arbitration award in favor of the defendant precludes the plaintiff from reasserting in court the claim the plaintiff lost in arbitration.     Application of holography to flow visualization within rotating compressor blade row

    Two holographic interblade row flow visualization systems were designed to determine the three-dimensional shock patterns and velocity distributions within the rotating blade row of a transonic fan rotor, utilizing the techniques of pulsed laser transmission holography. Both single- and double-exposure bright field holograms and dark field scattered-light holograms were successfully recorded. Two plastic windows were installed in the rotor tip casing and outer casing forward of the rotor to view the rotor blade passage. The viewing angle allowed detailed investigation of the leading edge shocks and shocks in the midspan damper area; limited details of the trailing edge shocks also were visible. A technique was devised for interpreting the reconstructed holograms by constructing three dimensional models that allowed identification of the major shock systems. The models compared favorably with theoretical predictions and results of the overall and blade element data. Most of the holograms were made using the rapid double-pulse technique

    A tool for subjective and interactive visual data exploration

    We present SIDE, a tool for Subjective and Interactive Visual Data Exploration, which lets users explore high dimensional data via subjectively informative 2D data visualizations. Many existing visual analytics tools are either restricted to specific problems and domains or they aim to find visualizations that align with user’s belief about the data. In contrast, our generic tool computes data visualizations that are surprising given a user’s current understanding of the data. The user’s belief state is represented as a set of projection tiles. Hence, this user-awareness offers users an efficient way to interactively explore yet-unknown features of complex high dimensional datasets

    Lymphotoxins and cytomegalovirus cooperatively induce interferon-beta, establishing host-virus détente

    Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related cytokines regulate cell death and survival and provide strong selective pressures for viruses, such as cytomegalovirus (CMV), to evolve counterstrategies in order to persist in immune-competent hosts. Signaling by the lymphotoxin (LT)-ÎČ receptor or TNF receptor-1, but not Fas or TRAIL receptors, inhibits the cytopathicity and replication of human CMV by a nonapoptotic, reversible process that requires nuclear factor ÎșB (NF-ÎșB)-dependent induction of interferon-ÎČ (IFN-ÎČ). Efficient induction of IFN-ÎČ requires virus infection and LT signaling, demonstrating the need for both host and viral factors in the curtailment of viral replication without cellular elimination. LTα-deficient mice and LTÎČR-Fc transgenic mice were profoundly susceptible to murine CMV infection. Together, these results reveal an essential and conserved role for LTs in establishing host defense to CMV

    Comprehensive data infrastructure for plant bioinformatics

    The iPlant Collaborative is a 5-year, National Science Foundation-funded effort to develop cyberinfrastructure to address a series of grand challenges in plant science. The second of these grand challenges is the Genotype-to- Phenotype project, which seeks to provide tools, in the form of a web-based Discovery Environment, for understanding the developmental process from DNA to a full-grown plant. Addressing this challenge requires the integration of multiple data types that may be stored in multiple formats, with varying levels of standardization. Providing for reproducibility requires that detailed information documenting the experimental provenance of data, and the computational transformations applied to data once it is brought into the iPlant environment. Handling the large quantities of data involved in high-throughput sequencing and other experimental sources of bioinformatics data requires a robust infrastructure for storing and reusing large data objects. We describe the currently planned workflows to be developed for the Genotype-to-Phenotype discovery environment, the data types and formats that must be imported and manipulated within the environment, and we describe the data model that has been developed to express and exchange data within the Discovery Environment, along with the provenance model defined for capturing experimental source and digital transformation descriptions. Capabilities for interaction with reference databases are addressed, focusing not just on the ability to retrieve data from such data sources, but on the ability to use the iPlant Discovery Environment to further populate these important resources. Future activities and the challenges they will present to the data infrastructure of the iPlant Collaborative are also described. © 2010 IEEE
