    The dynamical transition in proteins and non-Gaussian behavior of low frequency modes in Self Consistent Normal Mode Analysis

    Self Consistent Normal Mode Analysis (SCNMA) is applied to heme c type cytochrome f to study temperature dependent protein motion. Classical Normal Mode Analysis (NMA) assumes harmonic behavior and the protein Mean Square Displacement (MSD) has a linear dependence on temperature. This is only consistent with low temperature experimental results. To connect the protein vibrational motions between low temperature and physiological temperature, we have incorporated a fitted set of anharmonic potentials into SCNMA. In addition, Quantum Harmonic Oscillator (QHO) theory has been used to calculate the displacement distribution for individual vibrational modes. We find that the modes involving soft bonds exhibit significant non-Gaussian dynamics at physiological temperature, which suggests it may be the cause of the non-Gaussian behavior of the protein motions probed by Elastic Incoherent Neutron Scattering (EINS). The combined theory displays a dynamical transition caused by the softening of few "torsional" modes in the low frequency regime (< 50cm-1or 0.6ps). These modes change from Gaussian to a classical distribution upon heating.     Development of control systems for space shuttle vehicles, volume 1

    Control of winged two-stage space shuttle vehicles was investigated. Control requirements were determined and systems capable of meeting these requirements were synthesized. Control requirements unique to shuttles were identified. It is shown that these requirements can be satisfied by conventional control logics. Linear gain schedule controllers predominate. Actuator saturations require nonlinear compensation in some of the control systems

    Radiative corrections to W-boson hadroproduction: higher-order electroweak and supersymmetric effects

    The high accuracy envisaged for future measurements of W-boson production at hadron colliders has to be matched by precise theoretical predictions. We study the impact of electroweak radiative corrections on W-boson production cross sections and differential distributions at the Tevatron and at the LHC. In particular, we include photon-induced processes, which contribute at O(alpha), and leading radiative corrections beyond O(alpha) in the high-energy Sudakov regime and from multi-photon final-state radiation. We furthermore present the calculation of the complete supersymmetric next-to-leading-order electroweak and QCD corrections to W-boson hadroproduction within the MSSM. The supersymmetric corrections turn out to be negligible in the vicinity of the W resonance in general, reaching the percent level only at high lepton transverse momentum and for specific choices of the supersymmetric parameters.Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures, 2 new sections, including a comparison with previous results on multi-photon radiation; version published in PR

    Doing gender locally: The importance of ‘place’ in understanding marginalised masculinities and young men’s transitions to ‘safe’ and successful futures

    Observable anxieties have been developing about the position of boys and young men in contemporary society in recent years. This is expressed as a crisis of masculinity, in which place is often implicitly implicated, but is rarely considered for its role in the shaping of young men’s practices, trajectories and aspirations. Drawing on research conducted with young people who accessed a range of social care support services, this article argues that transition means different things for young men in different locales and that local definitions of masculinity are required to better understand young men’s lives and the opportunities available to them. The authors argue that home life, street life, individual neighbourhoods, regions and nations all shaped the young men’s identities and the practices they (and the staff working with them) drew on in order to create successful futures and ‘safe’ forms of masculinity. It is suggested that this place-based approach has the potential to re-shape the ‘crisis’ discourse surrounding masculinity and the anxieties associated with young men

    Depolarization regions of nonzero volume in bianisotropic homogenized composites

    In conventional approaches to the homogenization of random particulate composites, the component phase particles are often treated mathematically as vanishingly small, point-like entities. The electromagnetic responses of these component phase particles are provided by depolarization dyadics which derive from the singularity of the corresponding dyadic Green functions. Through neglecting the spatial extent of the depolarization region, important information may be lost, particularly relating to coherent scattering losses. We present an extension to the strong-property-fluctuation theory in which depolarization regions of nonzero volume and ellipsoidal geometry are accommodated. Therein, both the size and spatial distribution of the component phase particles are taken into account. The analysis is developed within the most general linear setting of bianisotropic homogenized composite mediums (HCMs). Numerical studies of the constitutive parameters are presented for representative examples of HCM; both Lorentz-reciprocal and Lorentz-nonreciprocal HCMs are considered. These studies reveal that estimates of the HCM constitutive parameters in relation to volume fraction, particle eccentricity, particle orientation and correlation length are all significantly influenced by the size of the component phase particles

    Galactic Cosmic Ray Origins and OB Associations: Evidence from SuperTIGER Observations of Elements 26_{26}Fe through 40_{40}Zr

    We report abundances of elements from 26_{26}Fe to 40_{40}Zr in the cosmic radiation measured by the SuperTIGER (Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder) instrument during 55 days of exposure on a long-duration balloon flight over Antarctica. These observations resolve elemental abundances in this charge range with single-element resolution and good statistics. These results support a model of cosmic-ray origin in which the source material consists of a mixture of 19−6+11^{+11}_{-6}\% material from massive stars and ∼\sim81\% normal interstellar medium (ISM) material with solar system abundances. The results also show a preferential acceleration of refractory elements (found in interstellar dust grains) by a factor of ∼\sim4 over volatile elements (found in interstellar gas) ordered by atomic mass (A).     Measures Matter: Scales for Adaptation, Cultural Distance, and Acculturation Orientation Revisited

    Building upon existing measures, four new brief acculturation scales are presented, measuring sociocultural adaptation, psychological adaptation, perceived cultural distance, and acculturation orientation. Following good scale reliability in initial samples, the English scales were translated into nine different languages (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai, and Turkish). The translated scales were administered to a large sample of sojourners (N = 1,929), demonstrating good reliability and adequate structural equivalence across languages. In line with existing theory, sociocultural adaptation and psychological adaptation were positively correlated, and showed a negative association with perceived cultural distance. General measures of well-being were correlated with adaptation and distance, with better adaptation relating to higher well-being, and more distance relating to lower well-being. Acculturation orientation toward the home and host culture were measured separately and a weak negative correlation was found between the two, supporting their independence. Arguing against dichotomization, these subscales were analyzed as continuous variables. Regression analysis showed sojourners to be better adapted, if they were oriented more toward the host culture and less toward the home culture. These new scales are proposed as alternatives to existing measures

Particular attention was focused on experimental issues concerning the direct reconstruction and threshold mass measurements, and on theoretical and experimental issues concerning the four jet final state.
