    Reduced dynamics of Ward solitons

    The moduli space of static finite energy solutions to Ward's integrable chiral model is the space MNM_N of based rational maps from \CP^1 to itself with degree NN. The Lagrangian of Ward's model gives rise to a K\"ahler metric and a magnetic vector potential on this space. However, the magnetic field strength vanishes, and the approximate non--relativistic solutions to Ward's model correspond to a geodesic motion on MNM_N. These solutions can be compared with exact solutions which describe non--scattering or scattering solitons.Comment: Final version, to appear in Nonlinearit

    The effects of machining process variables and tooling characterisation on the surface generation: modelling, simulation and application promise

    The paper presents a novel approach for modelling and simulation of the surface generation in the machining process. The approach, by integrating dynamic cutting force model, regenerative vibration model, machining system response model and tool profile model, models the complex surface generation process. Matlab Simulink is used to interactively perform the simulation in a user-friendly, effective and efficient manner. The effects of machining variables and tooling characteristics on the surface generation are investigated through simulations. CNC turning trials have been carried out to evaluate and validate the approach and simulations presented. The proposed approach contributes to comprehensive and better understanding of the machining system, and is promising for industrial applications with particular reference to the optimisation of the machining process based on the product/component surface functionality requirements

    Generic approach for deriving reliability and maintenance requirements through consideration of in-context customer objectives

    Not all implementations of reliability are equally effective at providing customer and user benefit. Random system failure with no prior warning or failure accommodation will have an immediate, usually adverse impact on operation. Nevertheless, this approach to reliability, implicit in measurements such as ‘failure rate’ and ‘MTBF’, is widely assumed without consideration of potential benefits of pro-active maintenance. Similarly, it is easy to assume that improved maintainability is always a good thing. However, maintainability is only one option available to reduce cost of ownership and reduce the impact of failure.     The experimental plan of displacement- and frequency-noise free laser interferometer

    We present the partial demonstration of displacement- and laser-noise free interferometer (DFI) and the next experimental plan to examine the complete configuration. A part of the full implementation of DFI has been demonstrated to confirm the cancellation of beamsplitter displacements. The displacements were suppressed by about two orders of magnitude. The aim of the next experiment is to operate the system and to confirm the cancellation of all displacement noises, while the gravitational wave (GW) signals survive. The optical displacements will be simulated by electro-optic modulators (EOM). To simulate the GW contribution to laser lights, we will use multiple EOMs

    A novel laser ranging system for measurement of ground-to-satellite distances

    A technique was developed for improving the precision of laser ranging measurements of ground-to-satellite distances. The method employs a mode-locked laser transmitter and utilizes an image converter tube equipped with deflection plates in measuring the time of flight of the laser pulse to a distant retroreflector and back. Samples of the outgoing and returning light pulses are focussed on the photocathode of the image converter tube, whose deflection plates are driven by a high-voltage 120 MHz sine wave derived from a very stable oscillator. From the relative positions of the images produced at the output phosphor by the two light pulses, it is possible to make a precise determination of the fractional amount by which the time of flight exceeds some large integral multiple of the period of the deflection sinusoid
