    How many keywords do authors assign to research articles – a multi-disciplinary analysis?

    Author keywords are one important data source for co-word analysis. The distri-bution of author keywords in papers has not been investigated at the discipline level. We analyzed six research fields from soft science to hard science to reveal the underlying quantitative patterns of author keywords. Normal distribution, Poisson distribution, and Weibull distribution were fitted by applying Maximum Likelihood Estimation. Chi-Square tests and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests were used to evaluate the goodness of fit. The results show that a large portion of pa-pers have no keyword or only one keyword in all these fields. The author key-word distributions of the six fields are represented. It’s shown that Weibull dis-tribution is the best fitted. This study provides practical implications for keyword selection in co-word analysis

    Anti-diabetic effect of the polyphenol-rich extract from Tadehagi triquetrum in diabetic mice

    Purpose: To clarify the diabetes-reducing abilities of the polyphenol-rich extract from Tadehagi triquetrum (HC) in diabetic ob/ob mice.Methods: Aerial parts of T. triquetrum were extracted under reflux and partitioned by n-butanol to generate HC. The effects of HC consumption on blood glucose and lipids, insulin resistance, and liver glucose metabolism were evaluated in vivo. The main compounds of HC were tested for their effects on stimulating glucose consumption and uptake by HepG2 hepatocytes and C2C12 myotubes.Results: After HC treatment, body fat, subcutaneous fat, and epidydimal fat masses decreased (p <0.05), while mean daily food intake was  unaffected. HC (200–400 mg/kg) decreased fasting blood glucose, glycosylated serum protein (GSP), and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAlc); it also lowered hyperinsulinemia, improved oral glucose tolerance, and reduced hyperlipidemia and liver fat content (p < 0.05). HC treatment markedly elevated liver glycogen content and activity of hepatic glucokinase and pyruvate kinase (p < 0.05). Eight polyphenols were isolated from HC, six of which potently stimulated glucose consumption and uptake in vivo.Conclusion: HC has potent antidiabetic activities. Polyphenols are the main compounds accounting for these effects. Chronic oral administration of HC may be an alternative therapy for managing diabetes, but this has to be subjected first to clinical studies.     Ex vivo pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic of hexahydrocolupulone against Clostridium perfringens in broiler chickens

    The economic impact of necrotizing enteritis (NE) resulting from Clostridium perfringens infection has been significant within the broiler industry. This study primarily investigated the antibacterial efficacy of hexahydrocolupulone against C. perfringens, and its pharmacokinetics within the ileal contents of broiler chickens. Additionally, a dosing regimen was developed based on the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) model specific to broiler chickens. Results of the study indicated that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of hexahydrocolupulone against C. perfringens ranged from 2 mg/L to 16 mg/L in MH broth. However, in ileal content, the MIC ranged from 8 mg/L to 64 mg/L. The mutation prevention concentration (MPC) in the culture medium was found to be 128 mg/L. After oral administration of hexahydrocolupulone at a single dosage of 10–40 mg/kg bodyweight, the peak concentration (Cmax), maximum concentration time (Tmax), and area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) in ileal content of broiler chickens were 291.42–3519.50 μg/g, 1–1.5 h, and 478.99–3121.41 μg h/g, respectively. By integrating the in vivo PK and ex vivo PD data, the AUC0-24h/MIC values required for achieving bacteriostatic, bactericidal, and bacterial eradication effects were determined to be 36.79, 52.67, and 62.71 h, respectively. A dosage regimen of 32.9 mg/kg at 24 h intervals for a duration of 3 days would yield therapeutic efficacy in broiler chickens against C. perfringens, provided that the MIC below 4 mg/L

    Case Report: A 42-year-old male with IABP developing multiple organ embolism and intestinal necrosis

    We report a 42-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and subsequently underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for revascularization. The patient was transferred to the cardiac intensive care unit for intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) due to frequent malignant arrhythmia after PCI. Then the patient experienced the most severe complications of IABP, including multiple organ embolism and intestinal necrosis. This report highlights the rare serious complications of IABP and the challenges encountered in handling this complex case

    Characterization of the Metabolic Fate of Datura metel Seed Extract and Its Main Constituents in Rats

    Datura metel L. has been frequently used in Chinese traditional medicine. However, little is known on the chemical composition and in vivo metabolism of its seeds. In this study, using the strategy “chemical analysis, metabolism of single representative compounds, and metabolism of extract at clinical dosage” that we propose here, 42 constituents were characterized from D. metel seeds water extract. Furthermore, the metabolic pathways of 13 representative bioactive compounds of D. metel seeds were studied in rats after the oral administration of D. metel seeds water extract at a clinical dosage (0.15 g/kg). These included three withanolides, two withanolide glucosides, four amides, one indole, one triterpenoid, one steroid, and one sesquiterpenoid, and with regard to phase II metabolism, hydroxylation, (de)methylation, and dehydrogenation reactions were dominant. Furthermore, the metabolism of D. metel seeds water extract provided to rats at a clinical dosage was investigated by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry based on the above metabolic pathways. Sixty-one compounds were detected in plasma, 83 in urine, and 76 in fecal samples. Among them, withanolides exhibited higher plasma exposure than the other types. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic study on the chemical profiling and metabolite identification of D. metel seeds, including all compounds instead of single constituents

    CMTCN: a web tool for investigating cancer-specific microRNA and transcription factor co-regulatory networks

    Transcription factors (TFs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) are well-characterized trans-acting essential players in gene expression regulation. Growing evidence indicates that TFs and miRNAs can work cooperatively, and their dysregulation has been associated with many diseases including cancer. A unified picture of regulatory interactions of these regulators and their joint target genes would shed light on cancer studies. Although online resources developed to support probing of TF-gene and miRNA-gene interactions are available, online applications for miRNA-TF co-regulatory analysis, especially with a focus on cancers, are lacking. In light of this, we developed a web tool, namely CMTCN (freely available at http://www.cbportal.org/CMTCN), which constructs miRNA-TF co-regulatory networks and conducts comprehensive analyses within the context of particular cancer types. With its user-friendly provision of topological and functional analyses, CMTCN promises to be a reliable and indispensable web tool for biomedical studies

    Adsorption of thallium(I) on rutile nano-titanium dioxide and environmental implications

    Rutile nano-titanium dioxide (RNTD) characterized by loose particles with diameter in 20–50 nm has a very large surface area for adsorption of Tl, a typical trace metal that has severe toxicity. The increasing application of RNTD and widespread discharge of Tl-bearing effluents from various industrial activities would increase the risk of their co-exposure in aquatic environments. The adsorption behavior of Tl(I) (a prevalent form of Tl in nature) on RNTD was studied as a function of solution pH, temperature, and ion strength. Adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics for Tl(I) were also investigated. The adsorption of Tl(I) on RNTD started at very low pH values and increased abruptly, then maintained at high level with increasing pH >9. Uptake of Tl(I) was very fast on RNTD in the first 15 min then slowed down. The adsorption of Tl(I) on RNTD was an exothermic process; and the adsorption isotherm of Tl(I) followed the Langmuir model, with the maximum adsorption amount of 51.2 mg/g at room temperature. The kinetics of Tl adsorption can be described by a pseudo-second-order equation. FT-IR spectroscopy revealed that -OH and -TiOO-H play an important role in the adsorption. All these results indicate that RNTD has a fast adsorption rate and excellent adsorption amount for Tl(I), which can thus alter the transport, bioavailability and fate of Tl(I) in aqueous environment

    Genetic prediction of causal association between serum bilirubin and hematologic malignancies: a two-sample Mendelian randomized and bioinformatics study

    IntroductionAn increasing number of cohort studies have shown a correlation between serum bilirubin and tumors, but no definitive causal relationship has been established between serum bilirubin and hematological malignancies.Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the causal relationship of serum bilirubin, including total bilirubin (TBIL) and direct bilirubin (DBIL), with hematological malignancies, including leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.MethodsWe used a genome-wide association study (GWAS) collection of TBIL, DBIL, and hematological malignancies data. Using two-sample Mendelian randomization(MR), we assessed the impact of TBIL and DBIL on hematological malignancies. For this study, the inverse variance weighting method (IVW) was the primary method of MR analysis. In the sensitivity analysis, the weighted median method, MR Egger regression, and MR-PRESSO test were used. To understand the mechanisms behind TBIL and DBIL, we used three different approaches based on screening single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and their associated genes, followed by bioinformatics analysis.ResultsThe IVW test results showed evidence of effects of TBIL (odds ratio [OR]: 4.47, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.58-12.62) and DBIL (OR: 3.31, 95% CI: 1.08-10.18) on the risk of acute myeloid leukemia (AML).The findings from bioinformatics indicated that TBIL could potentially undergo xenobiotic metabolism through cytochrome P450 and contribute to chemical carcinogenesis.DiscussionIn this study, two-sample MR analysis revealed a causal relationship between TBIL, DBIL, and AML

    Population genomics of an icefish reveals mechanisms of glacier-driven adaptive radiation in Antarctic notothenioids

    Background Antarctica harbors the bulk of the species diversity of the dominant teleost fish suborder—Notothenioidei. However, the forces that shape their evolution are still under debate. Results We sequenced the genome of an icefish, Chionodraco hamatus, and used population genomics and demographic modelling of sequenced genomes of 52 C. hamatus individuals collected mainly from two East Antarctic regions to investigate the factors driving speciation. Results revealed four icefish populations with clear reproduction separation were established 15 to 50 kya (kilo years ago) during the last glacial maxima (LGM). Selection sweeps in genes involving immune responses, cardiovascular development, and photoperception occurred differentially among the populations and were correlated with population-specific microbial communities and acquisition of distinct morphological features in the icefish taxa. Population and species-specific antifreeze glycoprotein gene expansion and glacial cycle-paced duplication/degeneration of the zona pellucida protein gene families indicated fluctuating thermal environments and periodic influence of glacial cycles on notothenioid divergence. Conclusions We revealed a series of genomic evidence indicating differential adaptation of C. hamatus populations and notothenioid species divergence in the extreme and unique marine environment. We conclude that geographic separation and adaptation to heterogeneous pathogen, oxygen, and light conditions of local habitats, periodically shaped by the glacial cycles, were the key drivers propelling species diversity in Antarctica.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
