    Simulation of Near-Tip Crack Behaviour and Its Correlation to Fatigue Crack Growth with a Modified Strip-Yield Model

    A modified strip-yield model has been developed to simulate the plasticity-induced crack closure under the constant amplitude (CA) and a single overload loading conditions. The paper focuses on the simulation of the near tip crack profiles and stress distributions during the fatigue process. Detailed information on near-tip stress and displacement fields at the maximum load (Pmax), the minimum load (Pmin), and the crack opening load (Pop) of a fatigue load cycle have been presented. The correlation of the crack closure to the near-tip material fatigue damage has been investigated and used to rationalize the crack growth behaviour under the CA and a single overload loading conditions.Peer reviewedSubmitted Versio

    A Case for Redundant Arrays of Hybrid Disks (RAHD)

    Hybrid Hard Disk Drive was originally concepted by Samsung, which incorporates a Flash memory in a magnetic disk. The combined ultra-high-density benefits of magnetic storage and the low-power and fast read access of NAND technology inspires us to construct Redundant Arrays of Hybrid Disks (RAHD) to offer a possible alternative to today’s Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks (RAIDs) and/or Massive Arrays of Idle Disks (MAIDs). We first design an internal management system (including Energy-Efficient Control) for hybrid disks. Three traces collected from real systems as well as a synthetic trace are then used to evaluate the RAHD arrays. The trace-driven experimental results show: in the high speed mode, a RAHD outplays the purely-magnetic-disk-based RAIDs by a factor of 2.4–4; in the energy-efficient mode, a RAHD4/5 can save up to 89% of energy at little performance degradationPeer reviewe

    Flow Investigation on the Directional Instability of Aircraft with the Single Vertical Tail

    AbstractAgeneric aircraft with the single vertical tail usually lose its directional stability at medium angle of attack (typically 20° to 30°). A model with moderate sweptwing of 47.5° and a conventional vertical tail is investigated in order to identify physical mechanisms responsible for directional stability. The results show that vertical tail and fuselage are the main components of the aircraft that generate yawing momentby the tests of model parts mounted and dismounted. The broken down vortex at windward side of vertical tail is the main reason for reducingstable yawing moment of vertical tail. Moreover, the middle part of the fuselage including air inlet and forepart of the wing is the main region of the fuselageenhancing unstable yawing moment

    A review on prognostics and health monitoring of proton exchange membrane fuel cell

    Fuel cell technology can be traced back to 1839 when British scientist Sir William Grove discovered that it was possible to generate electricity by the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen gases. However, fuel cell still cannot compete with internal combustion engines although they have many advantages including zero carbon emissions. Fossil fuels are cheaper and present very high volumetric energy densities compared with the hydrogen gas. Furthermore, hydrogen storage as a liquid is still a huge challenge. Another important disadvantage is the lifespan of the fuel cell because of their durability, reliability and maintainability. Prognostics is an emerging technology in sustainability of engineering systems through failure prevention, reliability assessment and remaining useful lifetime estimation. Prognostics and health monitoring can play a critical role in enhancing the durability, reliability and maintainability of the fuel cell system. This paper presents a review on the current state-of-the-art in prognostics and health monitoring of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC), aiming at identifying research and development opportunities in these fields. This paper also highlights the importance of incorporating prognostics and failure modes, mechanisms and effects analysis (FMMEA) in PEMFC to give them sustainable competitive advantage when compared with other non-clean energy solutions

    Building Comparative Product Relation Maps by Mining Consumer Opinions on the Web

    With the Web 2.0 paradigm, users play the active roles in producing Web contents at online forums, wiki, blogs, social networks, etc. Among these users contributed contents, many of them are opinions about products, services, or political issues. Accordingly, extracting the comparative relations about products or services by means of opinion mining techniques could generate significant business values. From the producers’ perspective, they could better understand the relative strength or weakness of their products, and hence developing better products to meet the consumers’ requirements. From the consumers’ perspective, they could exercise more informed purchasing decisions by comparing the various features of certain kind of products. The main contribution of this paper is the development of a novel Support Vector Machine (SVM) based comparative relation map generation method for automatic product features analysis based on the sheer volume of consumer opinions posted on the Web. The proposed method has been empirically evaluated based on the consumer opinions crawled from the Web recently. Our initial experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is promising, and the precision can achieve 73.15%

    BES3 time of flight monitoring system

    A Time of Flight monitoring system has been developed for BES3. The light source is a 442-443 nm laser diode, which is stable and provides a pulse width as narrow as 50 ps and a peak power as large as 2.6 W. Two optical-fiber bundles with a total of 512 optical fibers, including spares, are used to distribute the light pulses to the Time of Flight counters.     Single-filament Composite MgB2/SUS Ribbons by Powder-In-Tube Process

    We report the successful fabrication of single-filament composite MgB2/SUS ribbons, as an ultra-robust conductor type, employing the powder-in-tube (PIT) process, by swaging and cold rolling only. The remarkable transport critical current (Ic) of the non-sintered MgB2/SUS ribbon has observed, as an unexpected result. Transport critical currents Ic ~ 316 A at T = 4.2 K and Ic ~ 82 A at T = 20 K were observed at self-field, for the non-sintered composite MgB2/SUS ribbon. In addition, the persistent current density Jp values, that were estimated by Bean formula, were more than ~ 7  105 A/cm2 at T = 5 K, and ~ 1.2  105 A/cm2 at T = 30 K, for the sintered composite MgB2/SUS ribbon, at H = 0 G.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Unpacking the impact of social media analytics on customer satisfaction : do external stakeholder characteristics matter?

    Purpose Underpinned by the lens of Contingency Theory (CT), the purpose of this paper is to empirically evaluate whether the impact of social media analytics (SMA) on customer satisfaction (CS) is contingent on the characteristics of different external stakeholders, including business partners (i.e. partner diversity), competitors (i.e. localised competition) and customers (i.e. customer engagement). Design/methodology/approach Using both subjective and objective measures from multiple sources, we collected primary data from 141 hotels operating in Greece and their archival data from TripAdvisor and the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels (HCH) database to test the hypothesised relationships. Data were analysed through structural equation modelling. Findings This study confirms the positive association between SMA and CS, but it remains subject to the varied characteristics of external stakeholders. We find that an increase in CS due to the implementation of SMA is more pronounced for firms that (1) adopt a selective distribution strategy where a limited number of business partners are chosen for collaboration or (2) operate in a highly competitive local environment. The results further indicate that high level of customer engagement amplifies the moderating effect of partner diversity (when it is low) and localised competition (when it is high) on the SMA–CS relationship. Originality/value The study provides novel insights for managers on the need to consider external stakeholder characteristics when implementing SMA to enhance firms' CS, and for researchers on the value of studying SMA implementation from the CT perspective
