A large negative magnetoresistance is anticipated in topological semimetals in the parallel magnetic and electric field configuration as a consequence of the nontrivial topological properties. The negative magnetoresistance is believed to demonstrate the chiral anomaly, a long-sought high-energy physics effect, in solid-state systems. Recent experiments reveal that Cd3As2, a Dirac topological semimetal, has the record-high mobility and exhibits positive linear magnetoresistance in the orthogonal magnetic and electric field configuration. However, the negative magnetoresistance in the parallel magnetic and electric field configuration remains unveiled. Here, we report the observation of the negative magnetoresistance in Cd3As2 microribbons in the parallel magnetic and electric field configuration as large as 66% at 50 K and even visible at room temperatures. The observed negative magnetoresistance is sensitive to the angle between magnetic and electrical field, robust against temperature, and dependent on the carrier density. We have found that carrier densities of our Cd3As2 samples obey an Arrhenius's law, decreasing from 3.0x10^17 cm^-3 at 300 K to 2.2x10^16 cm^-3 below 50 K. The low carrier densities result in the large values of the negative magnetoresistance. We therefore attribute the observed negative magnetoresistance to the chiral anomaly. Furthermore, in the perpendicular magnetic and electric field configuration a positive non-saturating linear magnetoresistance up to 1670% at 14 T and 2 K is also observed. This work demonstrates potential applications of topological semimetals in magnetic devices

Next-decade needs for 3-D ionosphere imaging

Accurately imaging the 3-D ionospheric variation and its temporal evolution has always been a challenging task for the space weather community. Recent decades have witnessed tremendous steps forward in implementing ionospheric imaging, with the rapid growth of ionospheric data availability from multiple ground-based and space-borne sources. 3-D ionospheric imaging can yield altitude-resolved electron density and total electron content (TEC) distribution in the target region. It offers an essential tool for better specification and understanding of ionospheric dynamical variations, as well as for space weather applications to support government and industry preparedness and mitigation of extreme space weather impact. To better meet the above goals within the next decade, this perspective paper recommends continuous investment across agencies and joint studies through the community, in support of advancing 3-D ionospheric imaging approach with finer resolution and precision, better error covariance specification and uncertainty quantification, improved ionospheric driver estimation, support space weather nowcast and forecast, and sustained effort to increase global data coverage

International audienceTHE AUTHORS ARE EXTREMELY GRATEFUL TO GRID5000 for helping in designing and experimenting around Monte-Carlo Tree Search. In order to promote computer Go and stimulate further development and research in the field, the event activities, "Computational Intelligence Forum" and "World 99 Computer Go Championship," were held in Taiwan. This study focuses on the invited games played in the tournament, "Taiwanese Go players versus the computer program MoGo," held at National University of Tainan (NUTN). Several Taiwanese Go players, including one 9-Dan professional Go player and eight amateur Go players, were invited by NUTN to play against MoGo from August 26 to October 4, 2008. The MoGo program combines All Moves As First (AMAF)/Rapid Action Value Estimation (RAVE) values, online "UCT-like" values, offline values extracted from databases, and expert rules. Additionally, four properties of MoGo are analyzed including: (1) the weakness in corners, (2) the scaling over time, (3) the behavior in handicap games, and (4) the main strength of MoGo in contact fights. The results reveal that MoGo can reach the level of 3 Dan with, (1) good skills for fights, (2) weaknesses in corners, in particular for "semeai" situations, and (3) weaknesses in favorable situations such as handicap games. It is hoped that the advances in artificial intelligence and computational power will enable considerable progress in the field of computer Go, with the aim of achieving the same levels as computer chess or Chinese chess in the future

    Long-term geospace climate monitoring

Climate change is characterized by global surface warming associated with the increase of greenhouse gas population since the start of the industrial era. Growing evidence shows that the upper atmosphere is experiencing appreciable cooling over the last several decades. The seminal modeling study by Roble and Dickinson (1989) suggested potential effects of increased greenhouse gases on the ionosphere and thermosphere cooling which appear consistent with some observations. However, several outstanding issues remain regarding the role of CO2, other important contributors, and impacts of the cooling trend in the ionosphere and thermosphere: for example, (1) what is the regional variability of the trends? (2) the very strong ionospheric cooling observed by multiple incoherent scatter radars that does not fit with the prevailing theory based on the argument of anthropogenic greenhouse gas increases, why? (3) what is the effect of secular changes in Earth’s main magnetic field? Is it visible now in the ionospheric data and can it explain some of the regional variability in the observed ionospheric trends? (4) what is the impact of long-term cooling in the thermosphere on operational systems? (5) what are the appropriate strategic plans to ensure the long-term monitoring of the critical space climate

【Abstract】The assembly of spherical fullerenes, or buckyballs, into single crystals for crystallographic identification often suffers from disordered arrangement. Here we show a chiral configuration of decapyrrylcorannulene that has a concave ‘palm’ of corannulene and ten flexible electron-rich pyrryl group ‘fingers’ to mimic the smart molecular ‘hands’ for self-adaptably cradling various buckyballs in a (+)hand-ball-hand(−) mode. As exemplified by crystallographic identification of 15 buckyball structures representing pristine, exohedral, endohedral, dimeric and hetero-derivatization, the pyrryl groups twist with varying dihedral angles to adjust the interaction between decapyrrylcorannulene and fullerene. The self-adaptable electron-rich pyrryl groups, susceptible to methylation, are theoretically revealed to contribute more than the bowl-shaped palm of the corannulene in holding buckyball structures. The generality of the present decapyrrylcorannulene host with flexible pyrryl groups facilitates the visualization of numerous unknown/unsolved fullerenes by crystallography and the assembly of the otherwise close-packed spherical fullerenes into two-dimensional layered structures by intercalation. This research was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (21771152, 21721001, 21827801, 51572231, 51572254, 21571151, 2170010228), the 973 Program of China (2014CB845601 and 2015CB932301), the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation (2016M602067), the National Key Research and Development Program of China (2017YFA0402800), and the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Uni- versities (20720170028, 20720160084). Novel hypoxia-related gene signature for predicting prognoses that correlate with the tumor immune microenvironment in NSCLC

Background: Intratumoral hypoxia is widely associated with the development of malignancy, treatment resistance, and worse prognoses. The global influence of hypoxia-related genes (HRGs) on prognostic significance, tumor microenvironment characteristics, and therapeutic response is unclear in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Method: RNA-seq and clinical data for NSCLC patients were derived from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, and a group of HRGs was obtained from the MSigDB. The differentially expressed HRGs were determined using the limma package; prognostic HRGs were identified via univariate Cox regression. Using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and multivariate Cox regression, an optimized prognostic model consisting of nine HRGs was constructed. The prognostic model’s capacity was evaluated by Kaplan‒Meier survival curve analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis in the TCGA (training set) and GEO (validation set) cohorts. Moreover, a potential biological pathway and immune infiltration differences were explained. Results: A prognostic model containing nine HRGs (STC2, ALDOA, MIF, LDHA, EXT1, PGM2, ENO3, INHA, and RORA) was developed. NSCLC patients were separated into two risk categories according to the risk score generated by the hypoxia model. The model-based risk score had better predictive power than the clinicopathological method. Patients in the high-risk category had poor recurrence-free survival in the TCGA (HR: 1.426; 95% CI: 0.997–2.042; p = 0.046) and GEO (HR: 2.4; 95% CI: 1.7–3.2; p < 0.0001) cohorts. The overall survival of the high-risk category was also inferior to that of the low-risk category in the TCGA (HR: 1.8; 95% CI: 1.5–2.2; p < 0.0001) and GEO (HR: 1.8; 95% CI: 1.4–2.3; p < 0.0001) cohorts. Additionally, we discovered a notable distinction in the enrichment of immune-related pathways, immune cell abundance, and immune checkpoint gene expression between the two subcategories. Conclusion: The proposed 9-HRG signature is a promising indicator for predicting NSCLC patient prognosis and may be potentially applicable in checkpoint therapy efficiency prediction
