Statistical study of free magnetic energy and flare productivity of solar active regions
Photospheric vector magnetograms from Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on
board the Solar Dynamic Observatory are utilized as the boundary conditions to
extrapolate both non-linear force-free and potential magnetic fields in solar
corona. Based on the extrapolations, we are able to determine the free magnetic
energy (FME) stored in active regions (ARs). Over 3000 vector magnetograms in
61 ARs were analyzed. We compare FME with ARs' flare index (FI) and find that
there is a weak correlation () between FME and FI. FME shows slightly
improved flare predictability relative to total unsigned magnetic flux of ARs
in the following two aspects: (1) the flare productivity predicted by FME is
higher than that predicted by magnetic flux and (2) the correlation between FI
and FME is higher than that between FI and magnetic flux. However, this
improvement is not significant enough to make a substantial difference in
time-accumulated FI, rather than individual flare, predictions.Comment: The paper was submitted to ApJ and it is accepted no
Skin-stiffener interface stresses in composite stiffened panels
A model and solution method for determining the normal and shear stresses in the interface between the skin and the stiffener attached flange were developed. An efficient, analytical solution procedure was developed and incorporated in a sizing code for stiffened panels. The analysis procedure described provides a means to study the effects of material and geometric design parameters on the interface stresses. These stresses include the normal stress, and the shear stresses in both the longitudinal and the transverse directions. The tendency toward skin/stiffener separation may therefore be minimized by choosing appropriate values for the design variables. The most important design variables include the relative bending stiffnesses of the skin and stiffener attached flange, the bending stiffness of the stiffener web, and the flange width. The longitudinal compressive loads in the flange and skin have significant effects on the interface stresses

Tunable near- to mid-infrared pump terahertz probe spectroscopy in reflection geometry
Strong-field mid-infrared pump--terahertz (THz) probe spectroscopy has been
proven as a powerful tool for light control of different orders in strongly
correlated materials. We report the construction of an ultrafast broadband
infrared pump--THz probe system in reflection geometry. A two-output optical
parametric amplifier is used for generating mid-infrared pulses with GaSe as
the nonlinear crystal. The setup is capable of pumping bulk materials at
wavelengths ranging from 1.2 m to 15 m and beyond, and detecting the
subtle, transient photoinduced changes in the reflected electric field of the
THz probe at different temperatures. As a demonstration, we present 15 m
pump--THz probe measurements of a bulk EuSbTe single crystal. A
transient change in the reflected THz electric field can be clearly resolved.
The widely tuned pumping energy could be used in mode-selective excitation
experiments and applied to many strongly correlated electron systems.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
How Saturated are Absorption Lines in the Broad Absorption Line Quasar PG 1411+442 ?
Recently, convincing evidence was found for extremely large X-ray absorption
by column densities in broad absorption line quasars. One
consequence of this is that any soft X-ray emission from these QSOs would be
the scattered light or leaked light from partially covering absorbing material.
A detection of the unabsorbed soft X-ray and absorbed hard X-ray compo nent
will allow to determine the total column density as well as the effective
covering factor of the absorbing material, which can be hardly obtained from
the UV absorption lines. Brinkmann et al. (1999) showed that both the
unabsorbed and absorbed components are detected in the nearby very bright broad
absorption line quasar PG 1411+442. In this letter, we make a further analysis
of the broad band X-ray spectrum and the UV spectrum from HST, and demonstrate
that broad absorption lines are completely saturated at the bottom of
absorption troughs.Comment: 6 pages, 3 postscript figures. to appear in Astrophy. J. Letter
Fractional -scaling for quantum kicked rotors without cantori
Previous studies of quantum delta-kicked rotors have found momentum
probability distributions with a typical width (localization length )
characterized by fractional -scaling, ie in regimes
and phase-space regions close to `golden-ratio' cantori. In contrast, in
typical chaotic regimes, the scaling is integer, . Here we
consider a generic variant of the kicked rotor, the random-pair-kicked particle
(RP-KP), obtained by randomizing the phases every second kick; it has no KAM
mixed phase-space structures, like golden-ratio cantori, at all. Our unexpected
finding is that, over comparable phase-space regions, it also has fractional
scaling, but . A semiclassical analysis indicates that the
scaling here is of quantum origin and is not a signature of
classical cantori.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Revtex, typos removed, further analysis added,
