    A bibliometric profile of optogenetics: quantitative and qualitative analyses

    IntroductionOptogenetics is a rapidly developing field combining optics and genetics, with promising applications in neuroscience and beyond. However, there is currently a lack of bibliometric analyses examining publications in this area.MethodPublications on optogenetics were gathered from the Web of Science Core Collection Database. A quantitative analysis was conducted to gain insights into the annual scientific output, and distribution of authors, journals, subject categories, countries, and institutions. Additionally, qualitative analysis, such as co-occurrence network analysis, thematic analysis, and theme evolution, were performed to identify the main areas and trends of optogenetics articles.ResultsA total of 6,824 publications were included for analysis. The number of articles has rapidly grown since 2010, with an annual growth rate of 52.82%. Deisseroth K, Boyden ES, and Hegemann P were the most prolific contributors to the field. The United States contributed the most articles (3,051 articles), followed by China (623 articles). A majority of optogenetics-related articles are published in high-quality journals, including NATURE, SCIENCE, and CELL. These articles mainly belong to four subjects: neurosciences, biochemistry and molecular biology, neuroimaging, and materials science. Co-occurrence keyword network analysis identified three clusters: optogenetic components and techniques, optogenetics and neural circuitry, optogenetics and disease.ConclusionThe results suggest that optogenetics research is flourishing, focusing on optogenetic techniques and their applications in neural circuitry exploration and disease intervention. Optogenetics is expected to remain a hot topic in various fields in the future

    Devil in the Number: Towards Robust Multi-modality Data Filter

    In order to appropriately filter multi-modality data sets on a web-scale, it becomes crucial to employ suitable filtering methods to boost performance and reduce training costs. For instance, LAION papers employs the CLIP score filter to select data with CLIP scores surpassing a certain threshold. On the other hand, T-MARS achieves high-quality data filtering by detecting and masking text within images and then filtering by CLIP score. Through analyzing the dataset, we observe a significant proportion of redundant information, such as numbers, present in the textual content. Our experiments on a subset of the data unveil the profound impact of these redundant elements on the CLIP scores. A logical approach would involve reevaluating the CLIP scores after eliminating these influences. Experimentally, our text-based CLIP filter outperforms the top-ranked method on the ``small scale" of DataComp (a data filtering benchmark) on ImageNet distribution shifts, achieving a 3.6% performance improvement. The results also demonstrate that our proposed text-masked filter outperforms the original CLIP score filter when selecting the top 40% of the data. The impact of numbers on CLIP and their handling provide valuable insights for improving the effectiveness of CLIP training, including language rewrite techniques.Comment: ICCV 2023 Workshop: TNGCV-DataCom

    Upper urinary dilatation and treatment of 26 patients with diabetes insipidus: A single-center retrospective study

    ObjectiveTo describe the urinary tract characteristics of diabetes insipidus (DI) patients with upper urinary tract dilatation (UUTD) using the video-urodynamic recordings (VUDS), UUTD and all urinary tract dysfunction (AUTD) systems, and to summarize the experience in the treatment of DI with UUTD.MethodsThis retrospective study analyzed clinical data from 26 patients with DI, including micturition diary, water deprivation tests, imaging data and management. The UUTD and AUTD systems were used to evaluate the urinary tract characteristics. All patients were required to undergo VUDS, neurophysiologic tests to confirm the presence of neurogenic bladder (NB).ResultsVUDS showed that the mean values for bladder capacity and bladder compliance were 575.0 ± 135.1 ml and 51.5 ± 33.6 cmH2O in DI patients, and 42.3% (11/26) had a post-void residual >100 ml. NB was present in 6 (23.1%) of 26 DI patients with UUTD, and enterocystoplasty was recommended for two patients with poor bladder capacity, compliance and renal impairment. For the 24 remaining patients, medication combined with individualized and appropriate bladder management, including intermittent catheterization, indwelling catheter and regular voiding, achieved satisfactory results. High serum creatinine decreased from 248.0 ± 115.8 μmoI/L to 177.4 ± 92.8 μmoI/L in 12 patients from a population with a median of 108.1 μmoI/L (IQR: 79.9-206.5 μmoI/L). Forty-four dilated ureters showed significant improvement in the UUTD grade, and the median grade of 52 UUTD ureters decreased from 3 to 2.ConclusionBladder distension, trabeculation and decreased or absent sensations were common features for DI patients with UUTD. Individualized therapy by medication combined with appropriate bladder management can improve UUTD and renal function in DI patients

    A Survey of Deep Learning in Sports Applications: Perception, Comprehension, and Decision

    Deep learning has the potential to revolutionize sports performance, with applications ranging from perception and comprehension to decision. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of deep learning in sports performance, focusing on three main aspects: algorithms, datasets and virtual environments, and challenges. Firstly, we discuss the hierarchical structure of deep learning algorithms in sports performance which includes perception, comprehension and decision while comparing their strengths and weaknesses. Secondly, we list widely used existing datasets in sports and highlight their characteristics and limitations. Finally, we summarize current challenges and point out future trends of deep learning in sports. Our survey provides valuable reference material for researchers interested in deep learning in sports applications

    A variable mineralization time and solution concentration intervene in the microstructure of biomimetic mineralized collagen and potential osteogenic microenvironment

    The absence of a conducive bone formation microenvironment between fractured ends poses a significant challenge in repairing large bone defects. A promising solution is to construct a bone formation microenvironment that mimics natural bone tissue. Biomimetic mineralized collagen possesses a chemical composition and microstructure highly similar to the natural bone matrix, making it an ideal biomimetic bone substitute material. The microstructure of biomimetic mineralized collagen is influenced by various factors, and its biomineralization and microstructure, in turn, affect its physicochemical properties and biological activity. We aimed to utilize mineralization time and solution concentration as variables and employed the polymer-induced liquid precursor strategy to fabricate mineralized collagen with diverse microstructures, to shed light on how mineralization parameters impact the material microstructure and physicochemical properties. We also investigated the influence of microstructure and physicochemical properties on cell biocompatibility and the bone-forming microenvironment. Through comprehensive characterization, we examined the physical and chemical properties of I-EMC under various mineralization conditions and assessed the in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility and osteogenic performance. By investigating the relationship between mineralization parameters, material physicochemical properties, and osteogenic performance, we revealed how microstructures influence cellular behaviors like biocompatibility and osteogenic microenvironment. Encouragingly, mineralization solutions with varying concentrations, stabilized by polyacrylic acid, successfully produced intrafibrillar and extrafibrillar mineralized collagen. Compared to non-mineralized collagen, all mineralized samples demonstrated improved bone-forming performance. Notably, samples prepared with a 1× mineralization solution exhibited relatively smooth surfaces with even mineralization. Extending the mineralization time enhanced the degree of mineralization and osteogenic performance. Conversely, samples prepared with a 2× mineralization solution had rough surfaces with large calcium phosphate particles, indicating non-uniform mineralization. Overall, our research advances the potential for commercial production of mineralized collagen protein products, characterized by dual biomimetic properties, and their application in treating various types of bone defects

    Effect of urban innovation on land finance dependence: evidence from 233 Chinese cities

    Unlike most studies on urban innovation, which focus on the effects of land-use policies, this study investigates the effect of urban innovation (UI) on land finance dependence (LFD). In China, innovation-related policies are intended to create a shared business environment where new entrepreneurs can contribute to achieving sustainable economic growth. This study analyzes the spatiotemporal dynamics of LFD and UI from 2005 to 2019 using the spatial autocorrelation model and dynamic spatial Durbin model. It finds a positive spatial association between LFD and UI throughout the studied regions during the study period. It also reveals a significant inhibitory effect of UI on LFD and a negative impact on the LFD of neighbouring cities. Moreover, the inhibitory effects will increase over time. Lastly, this study shows varied impacts of UI on LFD in different regions, especially in eastern China. Important policy recommendations for high-quality development in China are provided

    Mutual Information-Based Brain Network Analysis in Post-stroke Patients With Different Levels of Depression

    Post-stroke depression (PSD) is the most common stroke-related emotional disorder, and it severely affects the recovery process. However, more than half cases are not correctly diagnosed. This study was designed to develop a new method to assess PSD using EEG signal to analyze the specificity of PSD patients' brain network. We have 107 subjects attended in this study (72 stabilized stroke survivors and 35 non-depressed healthy subjects). A Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) score was determined for all subjects before EEG data collection. According to HDRS score, the 72 patients were divided into 3 groups: post-stroke non-depression (PSND), post-stroke mild depression (PSMD) and post-stroke depression (PSD). Mutual information (MI)-based graph theory was used to analyze brain network connectivity. Statistical analysis of brain network characteristics was made with a threshold of 10–30% of the strongest MIs. The results showed significant weakened interhemispheric connections and lower clustering coefficient in post-stroke depressed patients compared to those in healthy controls. Stroke patients showed a decreasing trend in the connection between the parietal-occipital and the frontal area as the severity of the depression increased. PSD subjects showed abnormal brain network connectivity and network features based on EEG, suggesting that MI-based brain network may have the potential to assess the severity of depression post stroke

    Medium chain fatty acid supplementation improves animal metabolic and immune status during the transition period: A study on dairy cattle

    The transition period is the stage of the high incidence of metabolic and infectious diseases in dairy cows. Improving transition dairy cows’ health is crucial for the industry. This study aimed to determine the effects of dietary supplementation medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) on immune function, metabolic status, performance of transition dairy cows. Twenty multiparous Holstein cows randomly assigned to two treatments at 35 d before calving. 1) CON (fed the basal 2) MCFA treatment (basal diet was supplemented at an additional 20 g MCFAs mixture every day) until 70 d after calving. The results showed that the serum amyloid A myeloperoxidase concentrations in the blood of cows in MCFA treatment significantly decreased during the early lactation (from 1 d to 28 d after calving) 0.03, 0.04, respectively) compared with the CON, while the tumor necrosis factor concentration was significantly decreased at 56 d after calving (P = 0.02). In addition, the concentration of insulin in the pre-calving (from 21 d before calving to calving) blood of cows in MCFA treatment was significantly decreased (P = 0.04), and concentration of triglyceride also showed a downward trend at 28 d after calving 0.07). Meanwhile, MCFAs supplementation significantly decreased the concentrations of lithocholic acid, hyodeoxycholic acid, and hyocholic acid in the blood at 1 d calving (P = 0.02, < 0.01, < 0.01, respectively), and the level of hyocholic acid taurocholic acid concentrations (P < 0.01, = 0.01, respectively) decreased dramatically at 14 d after calving. However, compared with the CON, the pre-calving dry matter intake and the early lactation milk yield in MCFA treatment were significantly decreased (P = 0.05, 0.02, respectively). In conclusion, MCFAs supplementation transition diet could improve the immune function and metabolic status of dairy cows, and the health of transition cows might be beneficial from the endocrine status
