    International Advisees\u27 Perspectives on the Advising Relationship in Counseling Psychology Doctoral Programs

    Ten international students in U.S.-based counseling psychology doctoral programs were interviewed regarding their experiences as doctoral students, especially their advising relationship. Data were analyzed using consensual qualitative research (CQR). Participants reported more challenges than benefits of being international students, and more often described their doctoral programs as not culturally receptive than receptive to international students. Despite this assessment of the overall doctoral program, they described their own advising relationships as predominantly positive. Many international students discussed with their advisor their difficulties adjusting to a new environment and being away from home, and identified unique personal and professional needs as international students. Participants recommended that international students openly communicate with and seek a good relationship with their advisors, and also recommended that advisors of international students seek to understand and attend to international students\u27 culture and the challenges of being an international student. Implications for training and research are addressed

    Software Language Comprehension using a Program-Derived Semantics Graph

    Traditional code transformation structures, such as abstract syntax trees (ASTs), conteXtual flow graphs (XFGs), and more generally, compiler intermediate representations (IRs), may have limitations in extracting higher-order semantics from code. While work has already begun on higher-order semantics lifting (e.g., Aroma’s simplified parse tree (SPT), verified lifting’s lambda calculi, and Halide’s intentional domain specific language (DSL)), research in this area is still immature. To continue to advance this research, we present the program-derived semantics graph (PSG), a new graphical structure to capture semantics of code. The PSG is designed to provide a single structure for capturing program semantics at multiple levels of abstraction. The PSG may be in a class of emerging structural representations that cannot be built from a traditional set of predefined rules and instead must be learned. In this paper, we describe the PSG and its fundamental structural differences compared to state-of-the-art structures. Although our exploration into the PSG is in its infancy, our early results and architectural analysis indicate it is a promising new research direction to automatically extract program semantics

    Efficient Timed Reachability Analysis using Clock Difference Diagrams

    One of the major problems in applying automatic verication tools to industrial-size systems is the excessive amount of memory required during the state-space exploration of amodel. In the setting of real-time, this problem of state-explosion requires extra attention as information must be kept not only on the discrete control structure but also on the values of continuous clock variables. In this paper, we present Clock Dierence Diagrams, CDD's, a BDD-like data-structure forrepresenting and eectively manipulating certain non-convex subsets of the Euclidean space, notably those encountered during verication of timed automata. A version of the real-time verication tool Uppaal using CDD's as a compact datastructurefor storing explored symbolic states has been implemented. Our experimental results demonstrate signicant space-savings: for 8 industrial examples, the savings are between 46%and 99% with moderate increase in runtime. We further report on how the symbolic state-space exploration itself may be carried out using CDD's

    Zika Virus-induced Acute Myelitis and Motor Deficits in Adult Interferon αβ/γ Receptor Knockout Mice

    Zika virus (ZIKV) has received widespread attention because of its effect on the developing fetus. It is becoming apparent, however, that severe neurological sequelae, such as Guillian-Barrë syndrome (GBS), myelitis, encephalitis, and seizures can occur after infection of adults. This study demonstrates that a contemporary strain of ZIKV can widely infect astrocytes and neurons in the brain and spinal cord of adult, interferon α/β receptor knockout mice (AG129 strain) and cause progressive hindlimb paralysis, as well as severe seizure-like activity during the acute phase of disease. The severity of hindlimb motor deficits correlated with increased numbers of ZIKV-infected lumbosacral spinal motor neurons and decreased numbers of spinal motor neurons. Electrophysiological compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitudes in response to stimulation of the lumbosacral spinal cord were reduced when obvious motor deficits were present. ZIKV immunoreactivity was high, intense, and obvious in tissue sections of the brain and spinal cord. Infection in the brain and spinal cord was also associated with astrogliosis as well as T cell and neutrophil infiltration. CMAP and histological analysis indicated that peripheral nerve and muscle functions were intact. Consequently, motor deficits in these circumstances appear to be primarily due to myelitis and possibly encephalitis as opposed to a peripheral neuropathy or a GBS-like syndrome. Thus, acute ZIKV infection of adult AG129 mice may be a useful model for ZIKV-induced myelitis, encephalitis, and seizure activity

    Definitive endoderm derived from human embryonic stem cells highly express the integrin receptors αV and β5

    Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) can be directed to differentiate into a number of endoderm cell types, however mature functional cells have yet to be produced in vitro. This suggests that there may be important factors that have yet to be described, which may be essential for the proper derivation of these cells. One such factor is the integrin mediated interactions between a cell and the extracellular matrix (ECM). On this basis, the present study investigated the role of the ECM in the directed differentiation of hESCs to definitive endoderm via analysis of integrin gene expression. The results showed that definitive endoderm can be efficiently and effectively derived from hESCs in a feeder free, single defined ECM of laminin. Analysis of integrin expression also showed that definitive endoderm highly express the integrins αV and β5, which have the ability to bind to vitronectin, whilst expression of the pluripotency related laminin binding integrins α3, α6 and β4 were downregulated. This suggested a potential role of vitronectin binding integrins in the development of definitive endoderm. © 2010 Landes Bioscience

    Effective Potential for Scalar Field in Three Dimensions: Ising Model in the Ferromagnetic Phase

    We compute the effective potential Veff(ϕ)V_{\rm eff}(\phi) for one-component real scalar field ϕ\phi in three Euclidean dimensions (3D) in the case of spontaneously broken symmetry, from the Monte Carlo simulation of the 3D Ising model in external field at temperatures approaching the phase transition from below. We study probability distributions of the order parameter on the lattices from 30330^3 to 74374^3, at L/ξ10L/\xi \approx 10. We find that, in close analogy with the symmetric case, ϕ6\phi^6 plays an important role: Veff(ϕ)V_{\rm eff}(\phi) is very well approximated by the sum of ϕ2\phi^2, ϕ4\phi^4 and ϕ6\phi^6 terms. An unexpected feature is the negative sign of the ϕ4\phi^4 term. As close to the continuum limit as we can get (ξ7.2\xi \approx 7.2), we obtain Leff12μϕμϕ+1.7(ϕ2η2)2(ϕ2+η2). {\cal L}_{\rm eff} \approx {1 \over 2} \partial_\mu \phi \partial_\mu \phi + 1.7 (\phi^2 - \eta^2)^2 (\phi^2 + \eta^2).     Enumeration of maps with self avoiding loops and the O(n) model on random lattices of all topologies

    We compute the generating functions of a O(n) model (loop gas model) on a random lattice of any topology. On the disc and the cylinder, they were already known, and here we compute all the other topologies.     Iatrogenic Spinal Cord Injury Resulting From Cervical Spine Surgery.

    STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of prospectively collected data. OBJECTIVE: To examine the incidence of iatrogenic spinal cord injury following elective cervical spine surgery. METHODS: A retrospective multicenter case series study involving 21 high-volume surgical centers from the AOSpine North America Clinical Research Network was conducted. Medical records for 17 625 patients who received cervical spine surgery (levels from C2 to C7) between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2011, were reviewed to identify occurrence of iatrogenic spinal cord injury. RESULTS: In total, 3 cases of iatrogenic spinal cord injury following cervical spine surgery were identified. Institutional incidence rates ranged from 0.0% to 0.24%. Of the 3 patients with quadriplegia, one underwent anterior-only surgery with 2-level cervical corpectomy, one underwent anterior surgery with corpectomy in addition to posterior surgery, and one underwent posterior decompression and fusion surgery alone. One patient had complete neurologic recovery, one partially recovered, and one did not recover motor function. CONCLUSION: Iatrogenic spinal cord injury following cervical spine surgery is a rare and devastating adverse event. No standard protocol exists that can guarantee prevention of this complication, and there is a lack of consensus regarding evaluation and treatment when it does occur. Emergent imaging with magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography myelography to evaluate for compressive etiology or malpositioned instrumentation and avoidance of hypotension should be performed in cases of intraoperative and postoperative spinal cord injury

    Spectroscopy detects skeletal muscle microvascular dysfunction during onset of sepsis in a rat fecal peritonitis model

    Sepsis is a dysregulated host inflammatory response to infection potentially leading to life-threatening organ dysfunction. The objectives of this study were to determine whether early microvascular dysfunction (MVD) in skeletal muscle can be detected as dynamic changes in microvascular hemoglobin (MVHb) levels using spectroscopy and whether MVD precedes organ histopathology in septic peritonitis. Skeletal muscle of male Sprague–Dawley rats was prepared for intravital microscopy. After intraperitoneal injection of fecal slurry or saline, microscopy and spectroscopy recordings were taken for 6 h. Capillary red blood cell (RBC) dynamics and SO2 were quantified from digitized microscopy frames and MVHb levels were derived from spectroscopy data. Capillary RBC dynamics were significantly decreased by 4 h after peritoneal infection and preceded macrohemodynamic changes. At the same time, low-frequency oscillations in MVHb levels exhibited a significant increase in Power in parts of the muscle and resembled oscillations in RBC dynamics and SO2. After completion of microscopy, tissues were collected. Histopathological alterations were not observed in livers, kidneys, brains, or muscles 6 h after induction of peritonitis. The findings of this study show that, in our rat model of sepsis, MVD occurs before detectable organ histopathology and includes ~ 30-s oscillations in MVHb. Our work highlights MVHb oscillations as one of the indicators of MVD onset and provides a foundation for the use of non-invasive spectroscopy to continuously monitor MVD in septic patients
