    An Econometric Model for American Lobster

    An econometric model for the wholesale and ex-vessel markets of American lobster, Homarus amedcanus, was developed to determine the market impact of proposed increases in the minimum size for American lobster. Prices were found to be inflexible with respect to landing, imports, and income (i.e., the price flexibilities were less than one) in both wholesale and ex-vessel markets. The size of lobster has a statistically significant effect on wholesale and ex-vessel prices and revenues. On average, wholesalers pass along 52% of any price changes to lobstermen. The ex-vessel price impact of a given change in supply is about the same as for changes in either landings or imports. Any changes in public policies leading to increases in total landings of American lobster and/or decreases in the proportion of small lobsters in the landings would result in increases in gross revenues to fishermen and wholesalers. While the long-term impact would be favorable, the short-term market impact of increases in the minimum size for lobster would be uncertain.Demand and Price Analysis, Environmental Economics and Policy, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

    Robust fault detection for networked systems with communication delay and data missing

    n this paper, the robust fault detection problem is investigated for a class of discrete-time networked systems with unknown input and multiple state delays. A novel measurement model is utilized to represent both the random measurement delays and the stochastic data missing phenomenon, which typically result from the limited capacity of the communication networks. The network status is assumed to vary in a Markovian fashion and its transition probability matrix is uncertain but resides in a known convex set of a polytopic type. The main purpose of this paper is to design a robust fault detection filter such that, for all unknown inputs, possible parameter uncertainties and incomplete measurements, the error between the residual signal and the fault signal is made as small as possible. By casting the addressed robust fault detection problem into an auxiliary robust H∞ filtering problem of a certain Markovian jumping system, a sufficient condition for the existence of the desired robust fault detection filter is established in terms of linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed technique

    An island based hybrid evolutionary algorithm for optimization

Recently, more and more different evolutionary techniques have been developed, especially hybrid evolutionary algorithms. This paper proposes an island based hybrid evolutionary algorithm (IHEA) for optimization, which is based on Particle swarm optimization (PSO), Fast Evolutionary Programming (FEP), and Estimation of Distribution Algorithm (EDA). Within IHEA, an island model is designed to cooperatively search for the global optima in search space. By combining the strengths of the three component algorithms, IHEA greatly improves the optimization performance of the three basic algorithms.     Can surface flux transport account for the weak polar field in cycle 23?

    To reproduce the weak magnetic field on the polar caps of the Sun observed during the declining phase of cycle 23 poses a challenge to surface flux transport models since this cycle has not been particularly weak. We use a well-calibrated model to evaluate the parameter changes required to obtain simulated polar fields and open flux that are consistent with the observations. We find that the low polar field of cycle 23 could be reproduced by an increase of the meridional flow by 55% in the last cycle. Alternatively, a decrease of the mean tilt angle of sunspot groups by 28% would also lead to a similarly low polar field, but cause a delay of the polar field reversals by 1.5 years in comparison to the observations.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, Space Science Reviews, accepte

    Reply to Comment of Gazdzicki and Heinz on Strangeness Enhancement in p+Ap+A and S+AS+A

    The Comment of Gazdzicki and Heinz is flawed because their assumed baryon stopping power in pApA is inconsistent with data and because they ignored half the analysis based on the VENUS model. The Comment continues the misleading presentation of strangeness enhancement by focusing on ratios of integrated yields. Those ratios discard essential experimental information on the rapidity dependence of produced Λ\Lambda and obscure discrepancies between different data sets. Our conclusion remains that the NA35 minimum bias data on p+SΛ+Xp+S\rightarrow\Lambda +X indicate an anomalous enhancement of central rapidity strangeness in few nucleon reactions that points to non-equilibrium dynamics as responsible for strangeness enhancement in nuclear reactions.Comment: revtex file, 6 pages, submitted to Phys.     Dynamics of Coupling Functions in Globally Coupled Maps: Size, Periodicity and Stability of Clusters

    It is shown how different globally coupled map systems can be analyzed under a common framework by focusing on the dynamics of their respective global coupling functions. We investigate how the functional form of the coupling determines the formation of clusters in a globally coupled map system and the resulting periodicity of the global interaction. The allowed distributions of elements among periodic clusters is also found to depend on the functional form of the coupling. Through the analogy between globally coupled maps and a single driven map, the clustering behavior of the former systems can be characterized. By using this analogy, the dynamics of periodic clusters in systems displaying a constant global coupling are predicted; and for a particular family of coupling functions, it is shown that the stability condition of these clustered states can straightforwardly be derived.Comment: 12 pp, 5 figs, to appear in PR

    Coherent excitation of the singlet-triplet mixed 1s4f state of helium

    In this paper, we present a detailed theoretical description for the coherent electron-impact excitation, the subsequent time evolution, and the cascading decay process of the singlet-triplet mixed 1s4f state of helium. The excitation amplitude and phase of each sublevel of this state are related to measurable coincidence intensities and polarizations of the emitted photons. It is found that the intensity and polarization of the emitted photons are time modulated due to the singlet and triplet mixing in the 1s4f state

    Kir5.1 regulates Nedd4-2-mediated ubiquitination of Kir4.1 in distal nephron.

    Kir4.1/5.1 heterotetramer participates in generating the negative cell membrane potential in distal convoluted tubule (DCT) and plays a critical role in determining the activity of Na-Cl cotransporter (NCC). Kir5.1 contains a phosphothreonine motif at its COOH terminus (AA249-252). Coimmunoprecipitation showed that Nedd4-2 was associated with Kir5.1 in HEK293 cells cotransfected with Kir5.1 or Kir4.1/Kir5.1. GST pull-down further confirmed the association between Nedd4-2 and Kir5.1. Ubiquitination assay showed that Nedd4-2 increased the ubiquitination of Kir4.1/Kir5.1 heterotetramer in the cells cotransfected with Kir4.1/Kir5.1, but it has no effect on Kir4.1 or Kir5.1 alone. Patch-clamp and Western blot also demonstrated that coexpression of Nedd4-2 but not Nedd4-1 decreased K currents and Kir4.1 expression in the cells cotransfected with Kir4.1 and Kir5.1. In contrast, Nedd4-2 fails to inhibit Kir4.1 in the absence of Kir5.1 or in the cells transfected with the inactivated form of Nedd4-2 (Nedd4-2C821A). Moreover, the mutation of TPVT motif in the COOH terminus of Kir5.1 largely abolished the association of Nedd4-2 with Kir5.1 and abolished the inhibitory effect of Nedd4-2 on K currents in HEK293 cells transfected with Kir4.1 and Kir5.1 mutant (Kir5.1T249A). Finally, the basolateral K conductance in the DCT and Kir4.1 expression is significantly increased in the kidney-specific Nedd4-2 knockout or in Kir5.1 knockout mice in comparison to their corresponding wild-type littermates. We conclude that Nedd4-2 binds to Kir5.1 at the phosphothreonine motif of the COOH terminus, and the association of Nedd4-2 with Kir5.1 facilitates the ubiquitination of Kir4.1, thereby regulating its plasma expression in the DCT
