Wave equations with mass and dissipation

In this paper we consider a wave model with non-effective mass and dissipation terms and provide asymptotic descriptions of its representation of solutions. In particular we conclude sharp estimates for a corresponding energy and estimates of dispersive type.Comment: 28 pages; some minor corrections of typo

We describe a gesturally-controlled improvisation system for an experimental pianist, developed over several laboratory sessions and used during a performance [1] at the 2011 Conference on New Inter- faces for Musical Expression (NIME). We discuss the architecture and performative advantages and limitations of our gesturally-controlled improvisation system, and reflect on the lessons learned throughout its development. KEYWORDS: piano; improvisation; gesture recognition; machine learning

Soil microbial biomass in organic farming system.

Agricultural production systems have to combine management practices in order to sustain soil's profitability and quality. Organic farming is gaining worldwide acceptance and has been expanding at an annual rate of 20% in the last decade, accounting for over 24 million hectares worldwide. Organic practices avoid applications of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, rely on organic inputs and recycling for nutrient supply, and emphasize cropping system design and biological processes for pest management, as defined by organic farming regulation in the world. In comparison with conventional farming, organic farming has potential benefits in improving food quality and safety. Plant production in organic farming mainly depends on nutrient release as a function of mineralization processes in soils. The build-up of a large and active soil microbial biomass is important pool of accessible nutrients, therefore, is an important priority in organic farming. In organic farming, there is positive effect of quantity and quality of inputs of organic residues on soil microbial biomass. In this way, the organic systems are extremely important for the increase of the soil fertility and the maintenance of the environmental sustainability

    Action-based effects on music perception

The classical, disembodied approach to music cognition conceptualizes action and perception as separate, peripheral processes. In contrast, embodied accounts of music cognition emphasize the central role of the close coupling of action and perception. It is a commonly established fact that perception spurs action tendencies. We present a theoretical framework that captures the ways in which the human motor system and its actions can reciprocally influence the perception of music. The cornerstone of this framework is the common coding theory, postulating a representational overlap in the brain between the planning, the execution, and the perception of movement. The integration of action and perception in so-called internal models is explained as a result of associative learning processes. Characteristic of internal models is that they allow intended or perceived sensory states to be transferred into corresponding motor commands (inverse modeling), and vice versa, to predict the sensory outcomes of planned actions (forward modeling). Embodied accounts typically refer to inverse modeling to explain action effects on music perception (Leman, 2007). We extend this account by pinpointing forward modeling as an alternative mechanism by which action can modulate perception. We provide an extensive overview of recent empirical evidence in support of this idea. Additionally, we demonstrate that motor dysfunctions can cause perceptual disabilities, supporting the main idea of the paper that the human motor system plays a functional role in auditory perception. The finding that music perception is shaped by the human motor system and its actions suggests that the musical mind is highly embodied. However, we advocate for a more radical approach to embodied (music) cognition in the sense that it needs to be considered as a dynamical process, in which aspects of action, perception, introspection, and social interaction are of crucial importance

The high number of frisks daily performed is justified by its alleged importance to control crime and make police visible. Nevertheless, frisks’ legality is conditioned to founded suspicion of possession of forbidden weapons or other objects or papers that constitute corpus delicti (Brazilian Criminal Procedure Code, article 244). Therefore, this study examines the dichotomy between the way police practice frisks and the way Brazilian Law regulates this procedure. It is stressed that the way frisks are conducted is not only illegal, but also inefficient to control crime and obtain evidence. On the other hand, it is argued that black and poor young men are disproportionally frisked without reasonable suspicion of criminal activity. Thus, freedom of movement, privacy and generally the right to be let alone are not fully granted to these citizens, who are also more vulnerable to prosecution and encarceration due to the increase of police vigilance towards them. This context unveils that the violation of frisks’ legal regulation has perverse consequences, which are related to the fragile judicial control of police practices in Brazil. In conclusion, it is argued that, given the adoption of Rule of Law by Brazilian Constitution, a frisk must always be strictly related to at least one of its lawful objectives: gathering evidence or preventing damages or imminent danger. Otherwise, a frisk could be practiced as an infrapenalty by the police in a disciplinary and illegal manner
