Fatal lymphoproliferation and acute monocytic leukemia-like disease following infectious mononucleosis in the elderly
Three elderly patients are reported, in whom serologically confirmed recent infectious mononucleosis is followed by fatal lymphoproliferation (case 1), by acute monocytic leukemia (case 2), and by acute probably monocytic leukemia (case 3)
Extracting high fidelity quantum computer hardware from random systems
An overview of current status and prospects of the development of quantum
computer hardware based on inorganic crystals doped with rare-earth ions is
presented. Major parts of the experimental work in this area has been done in
two places, Canberra, Australia and Lund, Sweden, and the present description
follows more closely the Lund work. Techniques will be described that include
optimal filtering of the initially inhomogeneously broadened profile down to
well separated and narrow ensembles, as well as the use of advanced
pulse-shaping in order to achieve robust arbitrary single-qubit operations with
fidelities above 90%, as characterized by quantum state tomography. It is
expected that full scalability of these systems will require the ability to
determine the state of single rare-earth ions. It has been proposed that this
can be done using special readout ions doped into the crystal and an update is
given on the work to find and characterize such ions. Finally, a few aspects on
the possibilities for remote entanglement of ions in separate
rare-earth-ion-doped crystals are considered.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures. Written for The Proceedings of the

Experimental realization of a quantum game on a one-way quantum computer
We report the first demonstration of a quantum game on an all-optical one-way
quantum computer. Following a recent theoretical proposal we implement a
quantum version of Prisoner's Dilemma, where the quantum circuit is realized by
a 4-qubit box-cluster configuration and the player's local strategies by
measurements performed on the physical qubits of the cluster. This
demonstration underlines the strength and versatility of the one-way model and
we expect that this will trigger further interest in designing quantum
protocols and algorithms to be tested in state-of-the-art cluster resources.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Decoherence assisting a measurement-driven quantum evolution process
We study the problem of driving an unknown initial mixed quantum state onto a
known pure state without using unitary transformations. This can be achieved,
in an efficient manner, with the help of sequential measurements on at least
two unbiased bases. However here we found that, when the system is affected by
a decoherence mechanism, only one observable is required in order to achieve
the same goal. In this way the decoherence can assist the process. We show
that, depending on the sort of decoherence, the process can converge faster or
slower than the method implemented by means of two complementary observables.Comment: Four pages, three figures included ([email protected]
Deterministic cavity quantum electrodynamics with trapped ions
We have employed radio-frequency trapping to localize a single 40Ca+-ion in a high-finesse optical cavity. By means of laser Doppler cooling, the position spread of the ion's wavefunction along the cavity axis was reduced to 42 nm, a fraction of the resonance wavelength of ionized calcium (λ = 397 nm). By controlling the position of the ion in the optical field, continuous and completely deterministic coupling of ion and field was realized. The precise three-dimensional location of the ion in the cavity was measured by observing the fluorescent light emitted upon excitation in the cavity field. The single-ion system is ideally suited to implement cavity quantum electrodynamics under cw conditions. To this end we operate the cavity on the D3/2–P1/2 transition of 40Ca+ (λ = 866 nm). Applications include the controlled generation of single-photon pulses with high efficiency and two-ion quantum gates
About the dynamics and thermodynamics of trapped ions
This tutorial introduces the dynamics of charged particles in a
radiofrequency trap in a very general manner to point out the differences
between the dynamics in a quadrupole and in a multipole trap. When dense
samples are trapped, the dynamics is modified by the Coulomb repulsion between
ions. To take into account this repulsion, we propose to use a method,
originally developed for particles in Penning trap, that model the ion cloud as
a cold fluid. This method can not reproduce the organisation of cold clouds as
crystals but it allows one to scale the size of large samples with the trapping
parameters and the number of ions trapped, for different linear geometries of
trap.Comment: accepted for publication in the "Modern Applications of Trapped Ions"

Macroscopic Interference Effects in Resonant Cavities
We investigate the possibility of interference effects induced by macroscopic
quantum-mechanical superpositions of almost othogonal coherent states - a
Schroedinger cats state - in a resonant microcavity. Despite the fact that a
single atom, used as a probe of the cat state, on the average only change the
mean number of photons by one unit, we show that this single atom can change
the system drastically. Interference between the initial and almost orthogonal
macroscopic quantum states of the radiation field can now take place.
Dissipation under current experimental conditions is taken into account and it
is found that this does not necessarily change the intereference effects
dramatically.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figure
Distributed coherent manipulation of qutrits by virtual excitation processes
We propose a scheme for the deterministic coherent manipulation of two atomic
qutrits, trapped in separate cavities coupled through a short optical fibre or
optical resonator. We study such a system in the regime of dispersive
atom-field interactions, where the dynamics of atoms, cavities and fibre
operates through virtual population of both the atomic excited states and
photonic states in the cavities and fibre. We show that the resulting effective
dynamics allows for the creation of robust qutrit entanglement, and thoroughly
investigate the influence of imperfections and dissipation, due to atomic
spontaneous emission and photon leakage, on the entanglement of the two qutrits
state.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Direct observation of molecular cooperativity near the glass transition
We describe direct observations of molecular cooperativity near the glass
transition in poly-vinyl-acetate (PVAc), through nanometer-scale probing of
dielectric fluctuations. Molecular clusters switched spontaneously between two
to four distinct configurations, producing complex random-telegraph-signals
(RTS). Analysis of the RTS and their power spectra shows that individual
clusters exhibit both transient dynamical heterogeneity and non-exponential
kinetics.Comment: 14 pages pdf, need Acrobat Reade
High fidelity transport of trapped-ion qubits through an X-junction trap array
We report reliable transport of 9Be+ ions through a 2-D trap array that
includes a separate loading/reservoir zone and an "X-junction". During
transport the ion's kinetic energy in its local well increases by only a few
motional quanta and internal-state coherences are preserved. We also examine
two sources of energy gain during transport: a particular radio-frequency (RF)
noise heating mechanism and digital sampling noise. Such studies are important
to achieve scaling in a trapped-ion quantum information processor.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures Updated to reduce manuscript to four pages. Some
