Literatur im Netz - Sammeln, Erschließen, Archivieren. Praxisbericht über eine neue Herausforderung für die klassische Bibliothek. Vortrag auf der ASpB-Tagung an der Universitätsbibliothek Karlsruhe am 23.09.2009
In seinen Sammlungen bildet das Deutsche Literaturarchiv Marbach (DLA) das Netzwerk des literarischen Lebens in all seinen Facetten ab. Im Zentrum des quellenorientierten Sammelns und der Erschließung steht der Autor (bzw. die Autorin). Die Literatur wird dokumentiert vom Entstehungsprozess eines Werkes über die verschiedenen Ausgaben und dessen Rezeption in der Literaturkritik, seine dramaturgische Umsetzung in Hörfunk, Film, auf der Bühne und in der Musik. Seit 2008 bezieht das DLA auch Internetquellen wie literarische Zeitschriften, Netzliteratur und Weblogs in sein Spektrum mit ein und reagiert damit auf die zunehmende Bedeutung des Internets als Publikationsforum. Sammeln, Erschließen und Archivieren bilden eine notwendige Einheit; gerade die Flüchtigkeit der netzbasierten Ressourcen macht eine langfristige Sicherung der Verfügbarkeit erforderlich. Notwendig sind daher mehrere Säulen, auf denen diese neue Sammlung von „Literatur im Netz“ basiert
Catalytic Synthesis of Higher Alcohols
This thesis deals with the synthesis of higher alcohols using modified Cu/ZnO catalysts. The rate-limiting step for this type of catalyst is regarded as C1 to C2 chain growth step. Therefore the strategy was to mix ethanol with the synthesis gas, in order to propagate the chain growth from this step. Screening of parameters is both batch and continuous-flow reactors was performed
How load-carrying ants avoid falling over: mechanical stability during foraging in Atta vollenweideri grass-cutting ants.
BACKGROUND: Foraging workers of grass-cutting ants (Atta vollenweideri) regularly carry grass fragments larger than their own body. Fragment length has been shown to influence the ants' running speed and thereby the colony's food intake rate. We investigated whether and how grass-cutting ants maintain stability when carrying fragments of two different lengths but identical mass. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Ants carried all fragments in an upright, backwards-tilted position, but held long fragments more vertically than short ones. All carrying ants used an alternating tripod gait, where mechanical stability was increased by overlapping stance phases of consecutive steps. The overlap was greatest for ants carrying long fragments, resulting in more legs contacting the ground simultaneously. For all ants, the projection of the total centre of mass (ant and fragment) was often outside the supporting tripod, i.e. the three feet that would be in stance for a non-overlapping tripod gait. Stability was only achieved through additional legs in ground contact. Tripod stability (quantified as the minimum distance of the centre of mass to the edge of the supporting tripod) was significantly smaller for ants with long fragments. Here, tripod stability was lowest at the beginning of each step, when the center of mass was near the posterior margin of the supporting tripod. By contrast, tripod stability was lowest at the end of each step for ants carrying short fragments. Consistently, ants with long fragments mainly fell backwards, whereas ants carrying short fragments mainly fell forwards or to the side. Assuming that transporting ants adjust neither the fragment angle nor the gait, they would be less stable and more likely to fall over. CONCLUSIONS: In grass-cutting ants, the need to maintain static stability when carrying long grass fragments has led to multiple kinematic adjustments at the expense of a reduced material transport rate
EXAFS Analysis of Size-Constrained Semiconducting Materials
Semiconducting materials such as CdSe, CdS, PbS and GaP are included in crystalline zeolite Y and mordenite and structurally flexible ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer solid matrices. EXAFS analysis reveals formation of species with dimensions of molecular size up to ca. 13 A in the crystalline hosts, while the polymer matrices allow agglomeration of larger semiconducting particles. Zeolite anchored structures are distinctively different to small particles with bulk crystal structure as usually found in colloidal systems
Protein folding causes an arrest of preprotein translocation into mitochondria in vivo
With vital yeast cells, a hybrid protein consisting of the amino- terminal third of the precursor to cytochrome b2 and of the entire dihydrofolate reductase was arrested on the import pathway into mitochondria. Accumulation of the protein in the mitochondrial membranes was achieved by inducing a stable tertiary structure of the dihydrofolate reductase domain. Thereby, three salient features of mitochondrial protein uptake in vivo were demonstrated: its posttranslational character; the requirement for unfolding of precursors; and import through translocation contact sites. The permanent occupation of translocation sites by the fusion protein inhibited the import of other precursors; it did, however, not lead to leakage of mitochondrial ions, implying the existence of a channel that is sealed around the membrane spanning polypeptide segment

Prenatal vitamin intake during pregnancy and offspring obesity
Background/Objectives: In animal studies, exposure to multi-vitamins may be associated with obesity in the offspring; however, data in humans is sparse. We therefore examined the association between prenatal vitamin intake during pregnancy and offspring obesity.
Subjects/Methods: We investigated the association between prenatal vitamin intake and obesity among 29 160 mother-daughter dyads in the Nurses’ Health Study II. Mothers of participants provided information on prenatal vitamin use during pregnancy with the nurse daughter. Information on body fatness at ages 5 and 10, body mass index (BMI) at age 18, weight in 1989 and 2009, waist circumference, and height was obtained from the daughter. Polytomous logistic regression was used to predict BMI in early adulthood and adulthood, and body fatness in childhood. Linear regression was used to predict waist circumference in adulthood.
Results: In utero exposure to prenatal vitamins was not associated with body fatness, either in childhood or adulthood. Women whose mothers took prenatal vitamins during pregnancy had a covariate-adjusted odds ratio of being obese in adulthood of 0.99 (95% CI 0.92–1.05, P-value=0.68) compared to women whose mothers did not take prenatal vitamins. Women whose mothers took prenatal vitamins during pregnancy had a covariate-adjusted odds ratio of having the largest body shape at age 5 of 1.02 (95% CI 0.90–1.15, P-value=0.78). In additional analyses, in utero exposure to prenatal vitamins was also unrelated to adult abdominal adiposity.
Conclusions: Exposure to prenatal vitamins was not associated with body fatness either in childhood or in adulthood
